    Rugby in Australia have made a a mistake in not promoting the game outside of its “college boy” base. But one thing that doesn’t get spoken of enough is that codes like league , afl, and cricket have huge mainstream support and not only that they have MURDOCH MEDIA support. That’s TV, newspaper, apps, you name it, it’s the lot. It’s practically is the mainstream. Once you’re shunned from the Murdoch stable you become the enemy. Make no mistake Murdoch media try to destroy rugby in Australia. They do the exact same thing now to football in Australia. How many times do you see the league boofheads taking pot shots at rugby on tv. I enjoy both league and union though. It’s a travesty what’s happened to Rugby in this country. Rugby is a great game! We deserve to be doing better than this. However at the end of the day there are probably more factors. I mean there is only so much money and attention that can go around in our country. Our population is small and we’re so vast. So much money and resources poured into over-inflated league and AFL. Well they certainly hog the limelight but they’ve put themselves in that position. It’s difficult to support two successful codes that are so similar to each other. I don’t know where we go with rugby. I sometimes wish league never existed and we only had rugby. Imagine how strong we’d be.

    There are two major changes which has damaged the success of the states and Wallabies; the 2012 Arbib review into governance which fundamentally changed the way rugby was managed by disposal of experienced former players on the board and removal of NSW & Qld dominance of the board. In their place were professional director appointments with individuals that had no experience in rugby, sports management or media. Some of the professional directors that were appointed touted their experience in corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, diversity and equity. All irrelevant qualifications to run Australian rugby. This diverted income away from core rugby at club, state and national level to non core non income generating rugby like the women’s game and 7s. This created the law of diminishing returns where the Les successful the Wallabies were the less media income was received and this reduced income was spread to thinly, especially to non core programs. The other major change is the influx of Pacific Islanders into Australian rugby. These players motivation was to earn money to distribute to their families in Australia and country of origin. Their motivation was not to represent Australia, as evidenced by their post match conduct when they walk off the field laughing and joking with the opposition after getting beaten. Pride in the jersey is not what motivates these players. Anyway it’s too late to rectify the problems at the heart of Australian rugby. All these woke directors are not going to be booted off the board, and it’s too late to go back to the old model of selecting players to represent Australia. The game is effectively dead in Australia.

    Before long teams like NZ and S.Africa will be just be small sides, with the influx of rugby taking up in countries like Germany and Brazil, Spain just like it happened to football. Teams like NZ will struggle if you got countries taking it up with massive populations.

    I hope for Australia’s sake that rugby gets back to its glory days, instead of the boring NRL where the commentators keep crapping on about “ the greatest game “ and they manufacture all sorts of off field soap operas and drama to compensate for the fact it is an absolute minnow of a game on the world stage

    I remember back at boarding school, the reds players came to our school to run a session and meet students, players. It was great. But Up until that point, I never heard of them before. I grew up only knowing the nrl teams. Even now, I can’t name any world class wallabies player. It’s almost non existent to me.

I’ve now lived in Australia for half a decade, and I now see a very different reality. The love and appreciation for the sport and participation in rugby union in Australia is nothing compared to SA.

    As a rebels fan, i always think we need to cut the rebels and force and make it just the brumbies, reds & waratahs. As a Melbourne lad i would support the reds for sure. this would give our national team the best chance for world cup success! Make the 3 teams have youth programs in Melbourne, Northern Territory and Western Australia to pick the best from these states but keep 80% of the teams local talent. It will grow the game and accully make the wallabies a fortress once again.

    We did not come all the way from South Africa and made Australia our home to see Australian Rugby in decline, this need to be fixed as a matter of urgency, my children are born here and they are Australians, I can see the pain in their faces when they just watched South Africa beat New Zealand and they must wonder what is going on. We should not let our children down, Investment in the game as decline, clubs has close down, all because they lack roll models. In South Africa and New Zealand Rugby is a Religion, a way of life it will never change, but having our children play NRL or AFL is a complete waste of time and energy, their is no glory in playing yourself over, and over, and over, we need International participation and unless we can convince all Rugby playing Nations to form NRL or AFL teams (which will never happen) we have to build on Union, stop the decline and get the Wallaby's back on track, for our children's sake.

    Interesting. I definitely agree that the expansion from 3 teams to 5 was a disaster however I believe that there is a two other fundamental reasons. The first is the increased funds for European clubs. This has definitely helped SA rugby as our massive talent at school level ( now that the game is followed by all of SA and is no longer the preserve of one group Rugby is being played everywhere at all schools from the townships to the private schools) can now not only play rugby in SA but also in Europe and earn € and £s at no cost to SARFU While the same can be done in Aus and NZ there is one massive problem .. time zones. Although SA is in the Southern Hemisphere our time zones are essentially the same as Europe so you can sit back in the afternoon /evening and support your players in Europe ( all the games are shown here) . AUS and NZ have the tyranny of time … no one wants to watch their team play first thing in the morning. So it’s natural that AFL and NRL will dominate as that’s what people will watch on a Saturday afternoon!!! Best bet for AUS and NZ is to include teams in Super Rugby from Japan/ Hong Kong and Singapore that way you will have competitive teams. Earning $ or ¥ but you can watch the games in the afternoon. SA Rugby only changed when it realised if no longer has the funds to keep its players playing for SA provinces… rather let them play professionally in Europe but still select them for the Boks

    Outside of Sydney and Brisbane, club rugby doesn't really exist at the same level. Rugby has room for growth in Australia. It's needs restructuring down to high school rugby. Commercially the shute shield would struggle in an already saturated Sydney market. NRC almost found the right formula with franchises. 3 from NSW, 2 from QLD, 1 from VIC, ACT, WA. Fiji has canned the skipper cup. That opens the door for a Fijian franchise. Super Rugby started as artificial teams that people have gotten behind. The NRC was working imo.

  • @WilliamStJohn94

    Also how did this argument hold up when NZ and SA provincial rugby also have more than 3 provincial teams and NZ has less of a population? So if Australia wants to win again we need less super rugby teams? I see that as a little simplistic

  • @WilliamStJohn94
    @WilliamStJohn94 Год назад

    Think there is something to be said about how ARU Is with its grass roots campaign in comparison to other sports. Here in QLD AFL & NRL are smashing union at every unprofessional level. These are the future of Rugby, not being invested in at the same level. These are the future supporters that are not invested because they wernt introduced at a young age. I think ARU relies too much on Private School Rugby.

    It’s as simple as this, rugby league is more popular in Australia than union, thus taking all the talent. One glimpse at the International rugby league ranking shows AUSTRALIA at no1 and countries like South Africa at 26 and england and Argentina at 49. Go to the rugby union world rankings and you will see a vastly different story.

    The fall of the Australian Rugby team has been the intrusion of WOKE ideology group think into its management and then the the players. I would suggest that Australian Rugby needs to concentrate on "how to win" and focus less on the virtual signalling of woke ideology such as "what a woman is", LGBIQ++, "The voice to parliament" etc and not penalising (ostracising) players who fail to bend the knee to WOKE ideology and dare to think differently and have opinions different than the "enlightened ones".
