Conrail and Amtrak along the Mohawk River in the 1990's
The former New York Central mainline west of Albany was a 4-track speedway along the Mohawk River across the upper third of New York State on its way to Buffalo. Now 2 tracks with passing sidings, the action was still busy with many Conrail trains as well as several Amtrak trains in each direction in the 1990's when we visited the Chicago line during the late Conrail era with a focus around the Amsterdam area. A short visit to Syracuse is also seen at the end of this video. Many night shots are taken at the Amtrak station just west of Amsterdam at Guy Park.

This was my first visit to the R&N since 1990 (!) With a daily schedule putting the train out of North Reading around 2-2:30 pm, we found the train pretty easily and followed it northward through the beautiful mountains. Po...

those turboliners were underrated why gone so soon?
Turboliners were fine. Not sure why they had to remove them.
Is the "baggage car" that the FL9's pull off at Albany an HEP generator or something vs an actual baggage car I'm guessing?
@mgzuck It was a HEP generator as far as I know. If you look at the shot In Albany, It seems Rev up, so to speak, as the locomotive throttles up, which is interesting.
The then-new genesis engines appear at the end of video. Unit No. 203. On November 18, 1993, Metro-North placed an order for 30 new dual-mode locomotives which soon became known as the P32AC-DM. Four of these new locomotives would be owned by the CDOT and would wear a NH heritage paint scheme, with white for the top half and a white line going down the front and stops right below the first set of headlights and a spec down the sides and back, black for the middle portion, red for the bottom portion, a skinny white line in between the red and black again for the skinny line just above the undercarriage. The first completed unit, #201, was unveiled to the public as part of a ceremonially unveiling of the new locomotives on February 25, 1995. #201 then went into passenger service on May 3, 1995. Amtrak was receiving a fleet of 18 P32s to run on their empire routes to Poughkeepsie and Albany NY out of Penn Station in Manhattan NYC. These were numbered 700-717. The final four P32s, Nos. 228, 229, 230 and 231, were delivered to Metro-North in September of 2001. The last of the FL-9s were retired in October 2001 after the final P32AC-DMs were delivered for service.
David, this was an awesome video! Thanks for sharing
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it
These FL-9 dual-mode locomotives were monster activity back in the day on MNRR, Amtrak, and LIRR, too!!!
The FL9 diesel locomotives at the Metro North Railroad are old school
Great catches awesome chase and nice video
@lashendawest7509 Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
I noticed around 16:14 that one of the 44 seat handicapped coaches has a window that isn’t blanked out near the door. I have an HO Scale of the same car but I can’t make out the number of it. Can you help so I can use the proper decals? Thanks
@Transporter_Not_Statham I tried to magnify the video but can't make it out. If my father was still alive, he would've been able to tell you right away. He was a huge passenger car guy and knew all of the lienages of the heritage fleet. I saw your post on the Amtrak Modelers FB page. I hope someone on there can help.
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu funny thing, I got something of an answer and got started on the project, and when the absolute answer came it was too late 🤦♂️😁. But it was a quick fix. I chose 4648. I’m running it with my Crescent train from the early 90s when the Genesis units first came out
Back then Poughkeepsie trains skipped Ossining and Tarrytown?
@@jackslc01 I believe some did, not all
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu I assume some AM and PM Rush Hour Trains
Glad there's more video emerging of the starships (FL9-AC's). Overall they were a failure, but they were definitely little rockets!
At the time i was disappointed as they didnt sound like an F unit. Aesthetically I would take them now for sure
Great heritage catches and awesome video
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
19:50 It’s my favorite unit, 203!
Been up there a few times… my first few trips were nice I caught 18 in one day up there. Past couple of trips I took though have been seeing maybe 7 a day. I don’t know if I’m just not hitting it at the right time or what.
I had the same thing on this trip, this video was shot all in one day. The next day, on the Pocahontas district, we hardly saw anything. Very strange. I plan on returning next year for a few days.
Really enjoy rail action in my home state of West Virginia.👍🏼
Im glad you enjoyed it!
4:51, Oh hey there's me engine
What was the tower at 1:52:45?
My apologies, I had a typo on the time stamps. I just corrected it. That is NICE tower with the "Blue line" connection coming in on the left.
THE FL-9S!!!!!!! LETS GOOOOO-
Magnificent catches of the steam locomotive coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars. Thumbs up. Keep up the perfect work, my friend, liked and subscribed, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it
How fast did the train go on the Reading Line?
To be honest, I don't know. If I had to Hazard a guess, probably between 50 and 60 mph max.
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu that sounds about right. It's making ridiculously quick time between certain areas. 5 minutes from Blandon to Fleetwood? Nowadays, the average train takes about 10 minutes to traverse between the two cities.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome footage to look back on from this year.
11:43 never would have thought a K5LA would stray onto a Turboliner. Nice!
1:31:39 that's the most interesting thing in my mind. Conrail Defect Detector but instead of mentioning a location and state it simply goes "Conrail Trenton Line Milepost 14"
You know for some reason I didn't notice that before, very strange
Darn it. The one part I was hoping you had on this tape (passing New Market, NJ) is the only part that's been cut out.
Yeah, sorry about that. My dad was having a lot of battery issues with the older video equipment back then.
Awesome! I've been waiting years for Conrail footage of the Trenton Line between West Trenton and Manville. It also confirms that my favorite crossing on the line, Province Line Road (at 51:26) was indeed gateless before the late 1990s. Good to have the close on one hand, but it's a downer in that it means there's no original crossing signals left over from the Reading/early Conrail era. Besides the rebuilding of the MU yard at West Trenton, and realigning the CSX track beside it, it doesn't seem like much has changed along the Trenton Sub in the way of infrastructural projects. Like the double tracking of the Lehigh Line to Oak Island, the West Trenton realignment project was a necessary change since at the time, CSX movements were at an all-time high, and tie ups between CSX and SEPTA could not continue any longer. Do you have any other cab views videos of movements on trackage around the Philly area?
I think the only things I have is on Septa, I also have the Stony Creek Branch from an early 90s Excursion. "The Stoney Creek Ramble" behind both RL-1 units
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu those would be great to see if you can get them on RUclips! But this video series, wow! I've seen more of Conrail's major routes than I could ever hope to see. You should be proud!
Awesome video! I have Dan Neff's Oak Island to Harrisburg DVD from 1998, but it's awesome to see certain aspects of the line, i.e. crossing signal protection from further back in time!
Thanks! I love looking at the older crossing protection and the signals. Especially the signals around the Pattenburg tunnel.
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu how many parts is this video series meant to have?
@elirosen1391 I have one more that I'm working on editing that continues to Oak Island. Then it resumes at Manville and heads to Philadelphia Via West Trenton. The original video skipped from Oak Island back to Manville. To avoid duplication and conserve batteries
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu but what about the Manville to West Trenton portion? Was that one skipped as well?
@elirosen1391 It's on the upcoming final part. It picks up at Manville, where part 2 left off, goes to Oak Island. The part from Oak Island back to Manville is the part that was skipped. It picks back up at Manville and heads to Philadelphia Via West Trenton. It is all on there. That part is actually a composite between this trip and another OCS ride that covered the same territory. Dad was running into battery problems, so I edited together the two parts to make one continuous video.
Wonderful! Thank you so much for posting this. I will enjoy watching this and eagerly awaiting my Rapido Conrail E8s sometime in the (hopefully near) future!
Thanks for watching! I have a few more parts of this to upload. I have one of the Rapido E-8s pre-ordered and so far the Rapido Sleeper. I think Branch line is doing the rest of the cars as kits, they are in development.
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu I also have 10-5 sleeper ordered. Took me all of maybe 2 hours after the announcement to get online and get it! I didn't know about Branch Line! I hope you are right bc I have been slowly scratchbuilding the cars over the years. I have most of the dome car done as well as a few coaches but not any of the theater cars or six axles.
@Zach_Bloomquist I looked it up on the Conrail Historical Society page, it's Bethlehem Car Works, not Branch line. I mixed them up.
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu Ok I hadn't seen that. I had read in the Quarterly that they were trying to get another manufacturer to make them but hadn't seen anything concrete. I will have to check it out now! Excited. Is an understatement.
@Zach_Bloomquist CRHS posted it on their Facebook page a couple weeks ago
I didn’t know Amtrak was still using the vintage F units that recently
It’s crazy how I’ve seen some of these trains still operating today. I find the period prior to the Kawasaki M7 locomotives very fascinating.
Lots of train modeling opportunities
There sure is, thanks for watching!
@@DavidPaul-dh5iu that first clip was interesting that they used Horizon Fleet cars on the Albany-NYC section of the Lake Shore Limited
@Transporter_Not_Statham I remember they did that for a short time, but I don't remember the reasoning why. On one of my other videos, I have some clips of the Broadway Limited with a Horizon coach as well
That paintwork on Amtrak 301 and CSX 911 look nice.

Cool video. How real railroading was done . Skill in train crews and alot of praying.
Thank you! There was a lot of skill as well as praying involved on Saluda grade
No wonder the freight railroads cracked down on Amtrak, the Three Rivers was a freight train that happened to carry some passengers lol
Lol, at the time, my dad and I called it the "mail train"
This was excellent! Thanks for sharing
Anytime! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for actually video'ing the entire train. So much lost to time here
I enjoy looking at these old clips for the freight cars and the Fallen flag roads on them. Especially the lack of graffiti back then.
Thank you for the kind words, I have more videos to upload in the future!
Sweet more Conrail on the Northeast Corridor in Philly! I look forward to any other videos you have of the Philly or South Jersey area as I used to live there and grew up there.
