    All of the popular DAWs are good but I like Logic. Logic Pro X/10 is excellent but I like 11 slightly more. What I love most about Logic Pro more than other DAW is the visuals interface and stock sounds and plugins. But I am still a beginner at Logic Pro and music production overall

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 6 дней назад

      Growing up from GarageBand it was the most logical choice but after experimenting with other DAWs I keep coming back to Logic (and also Ableton for more specific workflows) its still the best value in digital audio to me!

      @RichardAshbyMusic the stock plugins instrument sounds and effects you can use in Logic Pro are great. When I apply effects to stock instrument sounds it sounds so much better and less robotic more human if that makes sense

    Thanks for the vid! Glad someone else has finally mentioned the connectivity and popping issues when plugging in an audio interface. Anyone have any solutions? I have a UMC404 that's worked great on my PC but is experiencing the same issues. I've read it likely stems from the USB converter hub but so far I haven't found any recommendations for a powered hub that is compatible with the Mac Mini M4 that might fix some of those problems.

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 6 дней назад

      I haven't either if I'm honest, I've been thinking about upgrade my whole audio system but I'm afraid of investing into it if i'll still have these same issues. I haven't considered using powered hub though that could be a game changer for the issue

    hey good video! could you share the monitor model you're using with your new macmini?

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 6 дней назад

      Of course! It's a "Samsung - 24" LED FHD AMD FreeSync Monitor with bezel-less design". I bought it from Best Buy in 2022 for like 100 dollars because it's all I could afford at the time. It's served me well so far but I'm sure there's even better things on the market now for a similar price

    As a Music maker myself that uses Logic, could I really get by with just the Base Model of this device, that has just 256GB? I like that it has at least 16GB of Unfied RAM though!

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 7 дней назад

      Well it depends on what your preferred workflow is. I prefer to work off of externals so I have an 1TB SSD drive that I work off of and periodically dump to a HDD every so often. If you use large sample libraries you can either put them on externals (which some companies like spitfire let you buy libraries on external drives that they ship to you directly) or NVMe SSDs are cheaper than ever meaning you can get a larger size of that for cheaper than it would be to upgrade the internal storage upfront. I'm considering doing this same thing soon actually

      Honestly I havent heard the fans once since I bought the machine, My recent video about the JT4000 Micro on my channel is fully 4K and has a music video with color processing and tons of effects and up to 4-6 layers of 4K video at a time and the computer handled it like dream without much heat or fan noise that's been my experience so far at least

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 7 дней назад

      My Behringer JT4000 video is all 4K and at the end of the video has a music video that has color grading and layers of 4K video all on top of each other and I was able to edit all of that and I didn't hear the fans turn on once. So I think its safe to say you can record without having to worry about the fan noise

  • @EarnSmartWithJesse
    @EarnSmartWithJesse 17 дней назад

    Do you have any sound issues using the presonous audio box and the m4? I can’t seem to find an audio interface that doesn’t have sound issues like popping and glitching, cutting in and out with the M4 base model. I have been doing tons of research and I’m not the only one. Tons of others have similar problems. Seems sequoia is too advanced for most interfaces and DAW’s.

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 7 дней назад

      I'm definitely getting some popping with the audio setup currently but that's never while recording. Only while idle do I get those pops and I think its an issue with the M-Series chips because I get disconnections with any of my peripherals and I've seen plenty of reports of people saying the same which leads me to believe that the greater industry isn't quite up to date with Apple's resources quite yet

    I love the jt-4000 micro, I have it hooked to a nice controller with all of its controls mapped to knobs, getting around the small stature and menu diving. It serves as a great sound module in my dawless jam setup. The newer model has a midi port, I use mine with a usb midi host box. I am also a fan of korg volcas, roland's compact series and the other mini behringer synths, bringing hardware synthesis into affordable price ranges.

    Just curious…did you purposely paint your nails to match the color scheme of the Roland T-8? Or was it just coincidence? And if it was coincidence…did u even notice b4 I pointed it out? Either way it’s pretty cool… I’m an artist (writer and musician) and sometimes it’s the little nuances of the human experience that interest me the most. Your thoughts?

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic 17 дней назад

      Short answer is yes I do actively paint my nails to match the color scheme and design language of whatever I'm reviewing. I started doing it with the Behringer TD-3 and just decided to keep it going. I figured it was a fun way to add some interest to a video that's mostly just my hands and its fun to have painted nails and I've even had a few good conversations that stemmed from the designs I wear!

      Maybe it's just my background in technology but I don't find AI to be all that intrusive to the music tech space. First, we're not forced to use these features. This version of Logic Pro is at its core just the same as all the others, press record and jam. These new AI features are simple just tools and aren't a forced part of the process. Just as we're not forced to use a flanger on every track we're not forced to use AI for anything. Secondly, Idea generation is one of the more useful features of AI in my opinion. I can definitely see myself and others using Session Players as a way to make a scratch demo or fill in some space in the track. Maybe those ideas are now overdubbed by actual players or used to communicate ideas to collaborators. The point is AI is here to stay and it's a tool just like any other, it's not coming to kill creativity because that's what separates us from machine, Creativity vs simple synthesis.

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic Месяц назад

      It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. The T-8 is much simpler and easier to understand in my opinion. If you're a beginner that may be the simplest way to go. The T-8 is also much newer so have more modern features included with it which is alway a plus. The Volca Drum is much more capable of tweaking but there is a bit of a learning curve learning how to control all of the beeping and booping that it does but this does mean you can have a wider variety of sound possibilities than what the T-8 is capable of

    I'm a video editor and own the M1 still happy. The conclusion I came to is the Pro is useful for complex effect heavy timelines (must be the same for music). People who seem to want to get the Pro because they want to future proof, but that's not a good strategy. Better to save the money for a new mini down the road. If you look back to the previous intel version and ask yourself if you'd still be happy with it if you paid double the price for the higher version? No you wouldn't. I'd recommend getting at least 512 internal. Even though I own an external drive the internal is always getting filled up. I've never regretted having more space.

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic Месяц назад

      Extra storage will absolutely never hurt but I guess I'm just used to buying base models and working off of SSDs especially because I use the Mini as my main machine and the older Intel MacBook as the portable workstation. But different workflows work for different folks so to each their own I suppose, maybe one day when income is more plentiful and the work is more demanding the Mac Studio may make an appearance at Richard Ashby Studios :)

    Hey man just breathe, ur not alone and this is a common challenge for almost all creatives. deadlines are overwhelming, but with a bit of structure and self-compassion, you can get ur momentum back. Seek feedback or immerse urself in art for some inspo but no matter what you do done is better than perfect 👍

      This is one of those moments where it feels bigger than it is, because I know this isn't going to be listened by that many people, if any, but this project is really symbolic to my person I guess. I won't trauma dump here in the comment section but there's a lot of stuff that this project was supposed to be that it hasn't materialized into and there many things to blame. But I feel my lost connection to art has been a deeper blow than originally anticipated. But I appreciate the encouraging words it really does mean a lot truly

      @@RichardAshbyMusic You have to remember this fleeting feeling of disconnection is not permanent, I suppose with the deadlines you're set between it might not feel that way but creativity is like a relationship sometimes passionate and alive and other times strained and distant, at the end of the day it's not going anywhere, and it's always something u can come back to in your own time and way. Furthermore, even if I'm the only person in the world that listens to ur album, or that it’s messy or incomplete, it’s still meaningful because _you made it_ You've got this, and have a nice day

    I’m probably still going to buy the pro. I have a dual use. Music production and graphic design. My current machine is a 14 year old hacked and upgraded 5,1 cheese grater. It still works fine for design using affinity designer. My Ableton use works fine as long as I don’t use certain resource heavy plugins like Arturia. I usually produce with a mixed samples of samples and soft synths . I often pre produce, sketch in Maschine and import the stems into Ableton to finish, mix,master in Ableton. I’m looking at the mini pro as a way to future proof for a while. Synth needs keep getting higher as companies get sloppier with their coding.

I don’t use After Effects anymore, I’m not doing print work very often and I’m not editing. Mostly storyboards and music. The Mac studio will be a serious production machine and if I was still running studios Would wait to set It up with those. If you’re buying a machine as a stop gap the lower end one makes sense. I’m looking for a machine I can use now and for quite a few years onwards. since there’s no upgrade path like my cheese grater has (this still infuriates me how anti consumer apple is) the M4 Mac Pro looks like the one for me. I’d certainly rather not spend money I don’t have but I’m a firm believer in the saying penny wise pound foolish. Buying a machine that ends up not being able to do what I need for very long isn’t ideal for me.

    Take it from an older dude: Before spending on a new computer just because everybody is talking about it and it seems cool, invest on better monitors and/or an audio-interface.

      I can completely agree with that, if you're in the market for a computer than this is a great one but upgrading computer ≠ better music/mixes/recordings/etc.

      @@RichardAshbyMusic Thanks for the reply. I know you didn't ask for my advice but I said that after seeing your monitors and your interface in the video. You should replace these first.

      Better to invest on a VSX headphones instead of monitors. You avoid having issues with audio treatment and you have a solid flat reference and a great mix.

    So question… Can I use the talk box on my mpk mini play controller since I don’t have a laptop yet??

    • @RichardAshbyMusic
      @RichardAshbyMusic Месяц назад

      I don't own one of those devices but just taking Quick Look at the I/O on the back I would guess that it wouldn't be comparable unless you can get a 3.5mm to 1/4 inch audio cable. The MPK only has an 3.5mm jack out and the TalkBox only takes 1/4inch in. There's no guarantee that this will work but it's my best guess.

    Can you suggest me any free music production software for mac I have also just bought my new mini 4 it would be really helpful

      Well naturally my first recommendation would be GarageBand, it's Logic Pro's baby brother and it's incredibly capable despite its first appearances. I used GarageBand for years before I decided to make the switch to Logic Pro and I still use it for smaller tasks like voiceovers. most DAWs have a free limited equivalent, Ableton has Ableton Live Lite (which I use for certain productions), Pro Tools has Pro Tools First, Studio One has Studio One Prime. I'd at least start there and play with the included sounds and instruments with this DAWs before moving on to third party plugins. This is especially true with GarageBand as it has TONS of virtual instruments and plug ins included that you can get lost in. If you have any other questions feel free to let me know!
