~Stewardship, Biodiversity, Awareness~
Our mission is to document plant biodiversity in support of research, teaching, and outreach for Michigan State University. We assist the Department of Plant Biology in research from molecules to ecosystems by providing stewardship of, and access to, over 500,000 well-curated specimens and associated data for use in a broad array of scholarly activities. Our efforts advance student learning, public outreach, and a broader understanding of the plant and fungal heritage of Michigan and the world.

The Michigan State University Herbarium: A tour of research and people
Hello and welcome to the Michigan State University Herbarium!
Herbaria are museums with libraries of preserved plants, fungi, and algae. Together, our specimens become a collection that tells a story of which plants were growing where, and at what times. But the Herbarium is more than a collection of plants-a network of people use and contribute to our collections and facilities. We've brought some of these people here to show you what they do and how the herbarium helps them and many others!
Their stories will take you through the herbarium's main features, functions, and collections. Please enjoy this tour of the MSU Herbarium!

Do Natural Areas Protect Native Biodiversity? | Plant Diversity in Baker Woodlot
Просмотров 3234 года назад
Efforts are in place across the globe to preserve our native habitats and prevent invasion by non-native species. To achieve this, diversity-rich areas are protected against development and disturbance. But does preserving land actually protect native biodiversity? To answer this, a study was conducted at Michigan State University that measured floristic changes in a nature preserve on campus.

The MSU Herbarium contains over half a million specimens; however, we are not the owners of this biodiversity, but the caretakers. The Herbarium has a terrific team of employees, interns, and volunteers who are responsible for the preservation, conservation, and organization of these specimens. Their collective efforts ensure that our collections are accessible and available for research, educa...

What’s on the label?
So useful -- many, many thanks. Three questions come to mind: 1) Any advice concerning what glue to use? 2) Do you ever reuse the wax paper? 3) Once mounted on the acid-free paper, how are the specimens stored?
What of the other?
we'll be collecting some specimens to press tomorrow, thankfully I've watched this before it
Can you do a video on how to make a diy press?
Do you add any diatomaceous earth/silica/any other form of pest control before filing? BTW that's a shton of washers!
Thanks for the video. Isn't it better to fix the plants with water tape? In this way, the plants or parts of them can be dismantled again in order to examine them.
This is a terrific question. "The Herbarium Handbook" actually says that it can be a tough decision to make. The rule of thumb is, larger, busier collections will use glue. We actually use both. I've noticed that older adhesive strips start to degrade and fail, and it's not actually that often somebody absolutely has to see underneath a specimen. We always try to flip over leaves while mounting. If a specimen absolutely has to be detached, the glue loosens when wet too. Finally, the parts that get dissected tend to be flowers and fruit, which we leave unglued.

What is called those paper in which specimens are pressed on?
Hi, this is Matt. It's Herbarium paper. You can buy it from a few different places, like Herbarium Supply or University Products, among others. There was a shortage for a while; I'm not sure if the shortage has ended or not. Herbarium paper is acid-free, and it doesn't become acidic over time. It's made from cotton, not wood. Does that answer your question?
Hello sir I want to contact you
I collected some plants and had no bags nor press so I walked to a gas station and bought gum, which came with a bag to hold the gum and the plants, and the dirt I swept off the cashier's counter 😬👍
Yesss you have the spreadsheet still right? Do you need to use the drying oven? Just bring the plants by as soon as you can so we can dry them!
Do you number your journals and keep a separate index of the specimens corresponding to the journal?
See 2:15!
I'm sorry, that didn't answer your question. What you can do is say what collection numbers are in the journal. Some people do keep a table of contents, but you end up with a LOT of specimens, so this becomes cumbersome. Spreadsheets are one way of dealing with this issue.
I got a handmade leather book several years ago, looks similar to this except mine is bounded. In the field, I put a flower on a page and forgot about it. It also has a "shadow" (colors/details are faded), the pressing is terrible but seeing this guy's enthusiasm makes me want to fully mount/label it :)
These seems like really complex kindergarten arts and crafts, except possibly dealing with endangered native flora. I love it
I’m new to this! Never knew this work existed! Your videos are fun to watch, and very educational! Such beautiful work you do!
Thank you! Sorry for the late reply. Since our biosphere is undergoing such significant change, it's more important than ever to continue documenting biodiversity. Support your local Herbarium! Natural history collections often rely on volunteers.
Very useful video....may u send such videos and give us knowledge...
One of the best explanation of herbarium specimen....thanks for the video...it helped me a lot... ❤️
Great sir...thanks for ur video...it has helped me a lot...
Thank you! We're glad it served its purpose!
Great video. Lots of help. Question, what is the glue you are using? PVA?
Yes, it is PVA: Missouri Botanical Garden type glue, from Herbarium Supply.
Great job and description. Thank you so much.
Thanks!
I would just add that it's important to not overcollect, and that many herbaria will accept a set of diagnostic photos in lieu of the physical plant in the case of endangered, threatened or very rare species. This also helps preserve the biodiversity of a site.
Thank you Matt. We love working with the MSU Herbarium to help us learn about plants.
Hi Rachel! I'm so glad you saw and liked it, and most importantly that it's informative!
Excellent! Loving the videos. I recommend checking smzeus . c o m. I’ve been using it to help grow my Instagram, you could use it to promote your channel.
