Lee Marvin was an actual WWII combat veteran, just like the hellraisers at the 1947 Hollister 'riot' that inspired this film, and a real-life motorcyclist. He played the part of Chino with devilish glee, and did it brilliantly! Marlon Brando was a Method actor in a shiny monogrammed leather jacket, snapping his fingers and mumbling already-dated 'hep cat' slang while trying to look tough. He bought a motorcycle because James Dean had one - I doubt he was ever a serious rider - and in the movie he comes across as a whiny teenager eaten up with Daddy issues. As for the story: Kramer left out the fact that the men at Hollister WERE combat veterans, and the many complicated reasons those men felt the need to come together and blow off steam the way they did. A filmmaker can't tell veterans' stories and just ignore the fact that they're veterans. Doing so is an insult to what those men endured, to all the brothers they lost in combat and the victory they secured after years of brutal warfare, saving the world from the fascist threat posed by the Axis forces. It's still a classic - the first real 'biker' film - and always worth a watch, but it is NOT history!

What?! Totally confused!! SPOILER ALERT>>>> Who is "the whistler?" and why is the film named after him when he "appears" briefly twice? So the last page of the diary showed that Harrison had put the poison in the medicine; why did the cop say at the end "this would have got him off the hook"???

The ending doesn't make sense.

God our Creator wants us to dress respectfully. It is easier to do our best when we look our best. Dresses, panty hose, and heels are not for me. I prefer slacks. But I still look neat and clean when I go out. It shows that I have respect for myself and others, although I don't judge others' way of dressing. It is not my business. Jeans, for example, are totally acceptable and popular nowadays. But at my age, I prefer loose-fitting slacks, a nice shirt, and nice-looking sneakers. 🎉

I found this vintage 'silver screen' movie more entertaining than a recent remake of Captain America I'd been watching beforehand.

So she did die from natural causes...not homicide. She didn't take the poison medicine, but hid the bottle. Even though he intended it....I had to play that ending back a few times!
