What a great old movie! I'm 42 and I really find a lot of appreciation for these old films!

I didn't get the ending, does the letter state that the 1st mrs harrison was still alive? If she didn't drink the poison then how did she die?

Movies today don't usually quote things from literature unless they are almost common knowledge. However back then such things as the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam actually was common knowledge. How far our school system has slipped. When I went to school we weren't allowed calculators in class. Now kids only need to know how to use Google and chatGPT to answer everything for them and it's about to get even worse now Ai is set to take over everything from the mundane to the complex. We're so smart we obsoleted ourselves.

Wish Dick Powell had made a lot more of these noir, detective movies. He was one of the best at fast talking and delivering one liners!! He had charisma for sure!!

Jim Backus was pretty good in this movie. Remember Gilligan's Island and Mr. Mcgoo? What great actor.

Today that would be “president” Rienzi …so glad it was just a movie Humphrey Bogart, John Garfield, and many others stood up against the corruption of their time, particularly during the McCarthy era. People in power used tactics leading to a climate of fear and repression. Today, there are those who would prostrate themselves before similar figures, showing complete submission or adoration.

Wow, it's a clear version of a narcissist. She is trying to avoid him, but narcissist people don't give up that easily. And a bored hubby.. boy, she needs to just get away from both of them.

OMG! I am a big Bogart fan and this ranks, for me at least right at the top of his five best movies! Just riveting start to finish, palpable tension building, tensions surrounding a job requiring truth dedication and sacrifice this film should be mandatory for any journalism degree along with Ethics! Thank you for this as a reminder of what real news should be!

Judging from the number the algorithm is bringing me, Hollywood must have banged out noir thrillers as fast as they were making cheap westerns!

Great movie. I found it a convenient but substantial omission that when Powell and Scott were out all afternoon and the evening that hubby and wife were supposed to play bridge, and he arrived home at 11:30 pm, we saw nothing at all of the wife questioning where the devil he was. Otherwise well done.

Its sad that people, in general, dress like total slobs when they go out in public. I people watch everyday and they look beyond atrocious.

almost a 100 yrs later, nothing changes in real life. shady businessmen buying up media in 2024, politicians threatening the media if they speak for the people. power n justice courts even seen working to its own monied backers ends. the 4th rail is nowadays almost gone but needed more than ever. the future of freedom n democracy is not nearly as upbeat as the finale n Mr bogarts last scene in todays retelling of that same story..sad but all is almost lost

Wait, so we’re feeling all patriotic over a film about non corrupt press through a Hollywood film depicting upstanding journalism whilst the truth is that the media/press is owned by a minority of wealthy bankers, etc. whom peddle propaganda, lies and trifling, negative slants on the truth? Great acting and a well written script…but…yawn as far as the attempted propaganda!!

He never apologized to his wife. So selfish. He feels guilty but not sorry. It was the model that broke up with him. She cared more about his family than he did. Jane Wyman is so pretty.
