So stop trying to defend something that needs no defending. Clark & Reese should have been 2023's Magic & Bird. - Instead we saw one of the biggest misses of the 2020s sports era. - Sure, Reese picked up some NIL, Clark has gone on to explode as a phenomena like few others have (Tiger comes to mind). Sadly, for Reese, there were no adults in the room. Mulkey and her agitation angles. (& Sadly, for SC players, there is no adult in the room. Staley and her victim-framing motivation.) The many many other coaches, teachers, parents, adults. Somehow not one could say, "Hey, look, big picture. You can play the petty game - which is manufacturing perceived slights and the right to act out on these - OR - you could reach your hand out... Everyone knows that two together are stronger than one alone. Let's look at the city/country b/w theme of competition and Mutual Respect that made Magic & Bird the biggest tandem in sports history. - Imagine if, after the (championship) game, win or lose, you go over to Clark and reach you hand out and say, ''You made me better, and it was an honor to be on the court with you. Today was our first battle, and I look forward to meeting you again - and winning! With respect.'' - The media, even this baiting & divisisve media, would have no choice but to capitalize on the best thing since....well, Magic and Bird. Those two would have taken over the zeitgeist even more than Clark has on her own.... But no... Instead, we now have this percieved skism. B/W, style, and whatever boring divisions the talking heads can dream up to get their clicks. We can do much better for our kids. We can do much better for our women, our girls - North and South, City and Country, B/W , together. There is zero excusing the behavior and hypocrisy of both of these coches. A coach of integrity would suspend players internally. But no. They are both ''proud'' of their players. They both equivocate with "they" or "this is not who we are" when we can see this is exactly them, exactly who they have made their players to be. The truth is these are two narcissistic coaches exploiting their own players for their own fame. They won't tell their own players the most important word that a young and talented person needs to hear "No." Depriving them this guidance, they deprive them the chance to have guidelines, the chance to grow. Who is the adult in the room? People are drawn to a bit of chaos. To a fight in the parking lot. We can't deny human nature's competiveness or dark interests. But do we really want to make that a part of the sports that are designed to give us a better outlet for our competiveness?
