Sailing Foxy Lady
Добавлен 4 май 2015
I started this channel to record my progress on repairing my 1973 30 foot Aristocat Catamaran. The Aristocat was the original mold that Robin Musters designed and built in Christchurch,UK. He went on to the US to build the first Gemini's with the same mold.
I am currently still serving in the British Army and quite restricted as too how much time i can invest into the boat and then create the youtube videos to capture it but i will catch and publish what i can. I will endeavor to release a video every Friday.
I am not a pro...at anything. This is a learning project for me so if you see me doing something crazy then please let me know so i don't do it again.
Thank you so much for all of you who have subscribed to my channel so far, it makes it all seem worth it to think it is helping or inspiring others to fix their boats as various channels has inspired me.

Yup I agree🙂
Hi mate, how are the windows holding out.
Hi mate, been what..4 years now? Absolutely fine. Would highly recommend. I'm flat out at the moment but will try do a window review video when life calms down
What's the benefit of these new seacocks ? Please
They are plastic and fibreglass composite, they don't corrode or seize up. Not as strong as bronze or brass but they have collars if in a vulnerable area to reinforce
It's plastic tho?
And fibreglass composite 💪
What’s the boat update? Missing this channel..
Hey sorry my life/work has been crazy. Had lots of adventures but not too much boat work. Will try get an update out soon. I'm going to be doing some big jobs soon but I'll explain all next time I'm at boat and have 5 minutes
I found that a 10mm wide 750mm long belt fits better.
nice to see back what are your plans
Cheers, I'm super busy with work so no real time for making videos at the moment but I'll go live with a few bits and pieces for now. Taking her across the channel in a month🙏
Nice to you back and still got foxy lady looking grand she is like the new door sound wasn't too good because of the wind hopefully see you again
Hi Kevin, thanks yeah door makes a huge difference! I'll tune in every now and then!!
Hi see you're still working at the boat. Hope you're ok, weather's been a bit of a witch this year .... 🧙🏻♂️👍🏼
Hi Clive, yeah between work and weather I haven't been upto much. Just slowly plodding along with jobs when I get half a day here and there!
Welcome back I was wondering the other day what had happened to you
Thanks mate, just been super busy with work. Will try get some videos done soon or do a few live videos to keep everyone upto date
Hi from New Zealand. I'm replacing the lesky water pump on my boat and looking at refurbishing the original to keep as a spare, so found your video interesting. Just for interest, my boat, a Cavalier 36 monohull called Arana, was called Foxy Lady when I bought it.
Hey Owen, hopefully this video helps a little bit mate. New pumps are so expensive. I have seen a few foxy lady's on ship tracker but yet to meet one!
What is the product for the railing?
Hi mate, it's from a company called Kedal. Really good it's recycled cd cases
Do you know the part number for the pump housing. Cheers Matt.
Hi matt, sorry mate. Far too long ago now I'm afraid!😕
Hi there next time heat the piston up to install the wrist pins, I shuddered watching you drive the pins in poor con rods. Nice music🇨🇦
Yeah my bad, I wasn't hanging around doing this
your injector timing lobe is on the wrong way round, as mine was too. going to try to start mine the am. will let you know if it fixed mine
Yes completely fixed it, now starts almost instantaneously. Very pleased
Thankyou John
35 knots in a marina😅. I know it's risk to life but geez.
Pretty cool to watch, just had to hold on when the waves hit the boat🤣
looks great did the perspex come tinted or did u put tint on them
Thankyou, the plastic came tinted from trent plastics. This one was dark grey
Montaggi scmbio
Assemblies?
Great Video! Are you happy with the primer you used? Are the window bonding good to the hull? I am thinking about using the Primer-209 D
Thankyou, yes all materials I used have now given me 2 years with no issues. 😄
Hope you're ok mate the weathers a bit chopping and changing.
Hi mate, all good. Yeah weather still crap!🤣
Hi I'm doing the same job. I need new mounts, what shore rating did you use?
Hi mate, really sorry i haven't been online but the engine came with new mounts fitted so I'm not sure to be honest! The ones fitted were prob a bit stiff but work fine
Could I see the track
Hi sorry I'm not near the boat at the minute but plenty of how i done it and what i used in videos
Hello and thank you for your video, I currently have the same problem as you, did you find the problem? Thanks
Morning, i never really did understand the how i fixed it, in reasembly of the front cover she fired up. No idea if something was wrong with the governor fly out or something stuck. But luckily for me, a strip and rebuild seemed to remedy it🙏
What was the actual problem on the non starting?
Hi Alex, no idea tbh, once i ressasembled that front cover it all run nicely and still is on the button!!🫣🫣
( the owner of this Centaur writes) thank you Spencer, I haven't used the boat much sincve you installed this engine but it drove us to Cowes and back perfectly smoothly. At high revs the prop seems to cavitate, but even at low revs this 30hp unit pushes the Centaur at five knots or so so I don't think I will bother changing to a bigger prop. Thanks again.
Good news, hope its still behaving
I also have a Centaur with the same engine. Best thing I've ever put on the boat
Where are you spence you okay mate
Hi Kevin, yes mate sorry. Just been really busy, will explain all and start editing again soon🙂
Fletch you taking a break regards jack
Yes mate, been a bit busy, will explain all but I'll start editing again soon
Hello! Very good video! I'm making the change and I don't know whether to make my own engine mount or buy it, that blue that you used looks very good. Where did they get it?
Hi, thanks very much. It was purchased in the UK via a local company but for your awareness, Jonathon is still waiting for parts now for the throttle control. The company is called Lightning Craft though. Very tidy package just not great without the correct calibrated controls
What happened to Spence? No videos?
Hi John, apologies mate, had a lot going on and a few changes in my life. I will do one soon and explain all
When you have replaced the gasket - have you applied a gasket sealant to prevent oil leaks?
Hi mate, i think i did more to keep the gasket in place. Generally if a gasket is one piece i don't use sealant. I'll only use of its an open gasket for cam shafts etc
I have a yse8 gonna recondition the entire head . It’s the valves in my case . I hope
Hopefully just valves and seats regrind for you mate🙏
Sorry I forgot to say though, she's a very good looking boat
Is a ten horse engine big enough? Some of these came with a twenty five hp engine.
Hi Tim, pushes her along nicely mate. Even in the arun which is second fastest river in the UK. 25 would be amazing but defo overkill unless you want to plane!🤣
I'm currently working on converting a boat to electric power. I've built a battery using LiFePO4 prismatic cells, each with a voltage of 3.2V and a capacity of 300Ah. The battery performs well, providing a current capacity of approximately 15kW, although it weighs around 80kg. I plan to install another battery this winter as I've realized that I need a continuous discharge rate of 200A to run the electric motor at its full rated power.
Sounds like a nice setup mate, john had installed a massive Bank of lifepo4 cells now. I will try do a catchup video on how it's behaving now and what it delivers etc
Thats a bit drastic Fletch😬 but thats the trouble when they seal things up so you cannot get in.
It is drastic but bored of beating around the bush!🤣🤣making a permanant solution
@@SailingFoxyLady Very infantryman 😂😉 ...🧙♂️

I don’t know much about boats, but I have been looking at “ sailing storm dancer” he is working on a Prout 31, from 1973. He seems to have some good ideas that you might like to check out. Regards.
Two things i know are bad wood and foam filler.. unles the wood is thoroughly epoxy treated and glassed first ... And any sealed space needs to be inspected....because most will leak at some time..
I wasnt a fan of wood when i started this project, now i despise it!🤣 but all a learning curve! Need to tackle the kids side soon but no huge rush at the moment as engine is in bits trying to find the problem!!🫣
For me this is a bit of dejavu! Will send you my photos of same problems. Removed all of the foam from under the bow. It was open cell foam not closed cell. Used a mattock to get it out. Faster than using a multitool. In your previous video you had water coming over the bow. All of the deck fittings had mild steel backing plates that were blown and the water was getting in under the fittings. The chain locker was removed without damaging the hatch area. The drain from the chain locker was leaking in to the balsa core so had to remove the damaged balsa. Replaced with foam core and reinforced with a total of 2000gsm of glass mat. More in the email
Maybe that pipe connection was too rigid? If the boat flexes when going through waves, it could end up repeatedly putting stress on that area, causing the pipe and/or connections to fail over time. When you first got the boat, it seemed like it had failed in exactly the same way.
Hi Dave yes i think you are right mate, me sailing her too hard and slamming into waves gives a bit of flex. I'm going to redesign to remove the locker and make bigger and better, with effective drainage and brace the top and bottom molds🤞🤞
I hope that is the only problem that you find and hopefully a new through hole will solve the problem good luck Spencer take your and do the without the pressure you had before
Thanks Kevin, yes it's going to be quite a big job but now i have a better understanding i can redesign appropriately and in my own time!🙂
كم معايره توقيت ضغط الديزل
Hi mate, wind in pressure screw a few turns clockwise, Lock revs at 4,200 Turn pressure screw anticlockwise until the revs drop, then wind back in 2.5 turns. That's the method without the correct measuring equipment👍👍👍
Thank you for this , I am planning changing from dyno start to alternator charging later on my Centaur and need to change the flywheel and fit a backplate for the starter and alternator on my engine.
Great idea Keith, i don't know why they brought out the dynostart. Its one part(expensive) to fail and you have to replace the whole lot🫣good luck!👍
@@SailingFoxyLady Thank you , yes when I get round to it I will do a video on how I did it.
@@keith800 great idea, will be very helpful for all those running dyna starts
Realizing this video is two years old, just the week I went through exactly what you were going through in this video. However, my electric motor had rusted so badly that it had swelled in the windlass housing. I beat the rust off and then applied copius amounts of penetrating oil and allowed it to set for a day or so. It took some persuasion with a large hammer to finally free the motor from the housing. I purchased a repacement motor from a US distributor and before installing it, I sprayed it with six layers of a clear waterproof finish. During installation I covered the shaft end of the electric motor with grease and sealed the gap between the electric motor and windlass housing with silicon. I used butyl tape as the gasket between the deck and windlass and protected the stainless steel bolts from the aluminum using plastic washers. The next morning I noticed gear box oil leaking from the windlass into the anchor chain locker. After talking to a very helper and knowledgable person with the US importer of the Lofrans Kobra windlass, I learned the lip seal needed replacing. So I had to removed the entire assebly from the boat and take it to my home shop. It was easy to remove the old lip seal with a small flat head screwdriver. I'm waiting for the new seal to arrive. For Lofrans Kobra models go to IMTRA.com and search in their window LWP72048. You'll see a parts breakdown. The lip seal size is 25x43x9mm. Hope this helps.
Good morning and thankyou for this. At the time i wrote it off but now like you say, i have seen motors for sale. I should have rebuilt and kept really but just now (2 years later) i have bought a lewmar v700 small and cheap!👌
Glad you have sorted the fuel tank out what are the fuel made of to the fuel filter if they are rubber is there a chance that the crud can stick to the inner rubber i think you should take foxy on a sea trail under load then you will be sure if everything is okay there are a few words ti describe the fuel but not printable although crap comes to mind so well done Spencer
🤣yup that pretty much covers it mate🙂. I don't think there was much in there mate just what was in there ruined the fuel. As of today engine still not working right. I do have the gaskets now to strip her but not had the weather and/or time.
Well that should remove one problem...but dont forget to clean the lines out as well. With RC model boats we some times use a semi floating pick up but once it gets stirred up from filling or waves your still going to get debris picking up.. A sump type filter with a big mesh area might stop a lot of the stuff getting picked up but still would need regular pumping out of the dregs.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 now i know how easy it is i might make it an annual thing to drain and clean😁
Hi Spencer when you stripped the manual pump down i was wondering if it was the rubber bellows because of the age of the engine have they got thin with age although working are they up to scratch just a thought see you next time
Hi Kevin, the engine is actually new, had only done around 50 hours before not being used for 6 years. The pump internals were immaculate and i did get hold of the rubber bin returns and still pliable and soft. Pretty much convinced its the internal injector settings now, just still not had time to get in there and pull her apart again🫣
Great video thanks, I'm doing the same job in my motor boat. What hardness mounts did you use please.
Great, glad it was helpful mate. The mounts come with the engine im afraid so i didn't purchase them but just bog standard universal mounts👍
@@SailingFoxyLady my M30 engine bounces around at start up and shut down and low revs, I think the mounts are too soft. But thanks for the reply.
@tamar5261 oh that's strange, are the mounts old and separated? Not sure about the internals on the M30 but could be a ballance shaft issue?
@@SailingFoxyLady no they are new mounts bought when I got the engine. They are 25 shore all around and I was told I need 45 shore on the rear. I don't know anything about it. Sorry just checked and they are 45 all round. I need 55 on the rear
@tamar5261 ah, yes do what's recommended and also check alignment on the shaft👍
Looking great, Spence. Have not been watching your episodes for a while, due to work and other commitments. Great that you have been able to take her out quite a bit. The deck (and the rest) is looking good. Have a great week.
Thankyou Chris, i know the feeling mate. RUclips is not a life prioity but i appreciate you tuning in for this one. Hope all is well🙏
