As Lauri-Volpì and Corelli in their early days, Richard Tucker had a goat vibrato with a lyric and powerful voice. Instead, Mario Lanza did not have a goal vibrato, but steady. Goat vibrato was common until the beginning of the 20th century and great sopranos and tenors, as Enrico Caruso, Francesco Tamagno, Hipólito Lázaro, Jan Peerce, Achille Braschi, Roberto Stagno, Julián Gayarre, Fernando de Lucia, Angelo Masini, Francesco Marconi and so forth, had this type of vibrato. I was lucky enough to see him in recital at Carnegie Hall. He so influenced me with the way he performed his Duparc selection, that I had to dive in!...and 4 years later, I performed them in concert with Dinard Smith, brother of Mezzo Soprano Barbara Conrad. God rest him.

L'ultimo grande "vero" baritono italiano. Incredibile come il disinteresse dell'industria discografica condizioni la carriera anche di un gigante delle lirica come Maffeo, che avrebbe meritato ben altro. Ad ogni modo è da mettere nel Pantheon dei grandi cantanti lirici.

This voice has affected me since the first time I heard her on the radio. I was 24 and 40 years on it is still so beautiful to me. 🌷💗 I am very grateful to find this. Thank you from New Zealand.

Heard his voice for the first time today...he was younger and a Met darling....I guess his lack of recordings is how I've missed him over the 50 years I've been tracking male operatic voices and collecting vinyl recordings. This is a a very worn voice to my ear....and he is only about 50 or 52. He also looks drawn in the face. Was he ill at this time? Had I just listened to his voice here and earlier I'd not have connected the two to the same person.....I know not all voices necessarily decline so noticeably....Did he like so many take on the wrong roles for his voice at the peak of his career?

How wonderful to hear a song sung the way is was written and intended to be sung. I do not know why many performers change the tune and beat and other things about a song to suit "their style". I am not interested in another "style", I want to hear the "real thing". Miss Steber was magnificent in everything she did.
