Just took a course with Scott and his assistant Josh, wonderful classy guy with a kind heart. I am amazed how he can keep his enthusiasm to teach others the game when he teaches so often. He keeps his lessons fun, lightweight, but also jam packed with practical information that can be applied right away. Very glad to have crossed paths and of course, he's a great player.

[16] 23:28 What do you look for in a doubles partner? The Waters both prioritize finding mixed doubles partners who remain positive, even after mistakes. Anna Leigh explained that women face immense pressure receiving most shots, so a supportive partner is crucial. Negative energy or eye rolls create anxiety. They credit frequent partners Tyson McGuffin and Kyle Yates for staying upbeat and encouraging. Leigh also appreciates strategic partners who communicate tactics before points. [17] 25:56 Who enjoys being in the kitchen more? Anna Leigh loves cooking Italian food, especially meatballs, meatloaf and pasta made completely from scratch. She also makes excellent pancakes for breakfast. Leigh revealed that Anna Leigh prepared the entire Thanksgiving dinner herself last year. Her baking talents shine through on cakes as well. [18] 27:11 What are you binge watching? During rain delays at the U.S. Open, the Waters used the downtime to stream episodes of Pretty Little Liars. They became engrossed in the mystery/drama series, binging multiple seasons in just a few weeks. It provided a compelling distraction between matches in Naples. Leigh and Anna Leigh Waters have medaled at the sport's highest level while navigating the delicate balance of fierce competitors and loving mother-daughter duo. As pickleball explodes in popularity, keep an eye out for this emerging mother-daughter team as they continue battling opponents and rain delays on their quest for golden moments.

Mother-Daughter Duo Leigh and Anna Leigh Waters on Battling Each Other, Ice Cream, and Winning Bronze at the 2021 U.S. Open Pickleball Championships Pickleball’s Newest Mother-Daughter Stars Open Up About Their Rapid Rise to Success and Competing Against One Another on the Sport's Biggest Stage Anna Leigh Waters, 14, and her mom Leigh Waters, 42, took the pickleball world by storm in 2019, winning a gold medal together in women's doubles at the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships in Indian Well, California. The thrilling mother-daughter duo spoke with host Scott Golden in an April 2021 "In The Kitchen" interview about battling each other on opposing mixed doubles teams, embracing after an emotional win by Leigh, Anna Leigh's go-to ice cream order, waking up at dawn to finish a rain-delayed match, and much more. [1] 0:46 What was it like playing against each other in the US Open? Leigh called playing against her daughter in mixed doubles at the U.S. Open "the weirdest experience you can imagine." She elaborated: "Even though you want to win and you don't want to let your partner down, you also want them to do well and win, so it's just like a weird dynamic going on there." Anna Leigh confessed: "I personally hate it. It makes me physically ill when I see that I have to play her in a draw." She explained that while it's scary playing her talented mom, the "mother-daughter dynamic" also makes it extremely awkward. "I want her to win and do really well but yet here I'm playing with Tyson McGuffin - he doesn't want to go out, he wants to win." Leigh admitted they avoided saying "Come on!" when winning points against each other, making for a subdued and uncomfortable match. [2] 2:13 Can you talk about the long embrace after your mixed doubles match: Leigh Waters/Tyson McGuffin vs Anna Leigh Waters/Kyle Yates? After losing to her mom 15-12 in mixed doubles, Anna Leigh was visibly upset. Leigh recognized her daughter's disappointment and made a point to grab and hug her after the match, whispering encouragement in her ear. The embrace helped diffuse the emotion of the tough loss. Leigh later treated her daughter to ice cream, making jokes until she got Anna Leigh to laugh and put the difficult match behind them. "We understand that at the end of the match like most importantly we're mother daughter and so afterwards I could tell that Anna Leigh was upset as I would have been had I lost and I knew that if I could just grab her and get a hold of her and hug her and just say a few things in her ear that that it would help the situation and I think it did," Leigh explained. [3] 4:04 Anna Leigh - what ice-cream flavor did you get? To help cheer herself up after losing to her mom, Anna Leigh treated herself to cookies and cream ice cream in a waffle cone. As she put it: "I got the waffle cone cookies and cream ice cream after we after I lost that has to be a little bit better." The sweet snack was the perfect pick-me-up following the disappointing loss. [4] 5:08 What was it like to finish your Friday Women's Doubles Bronze Medal match on Saturday morning? Leigh and Anna Leigh were leading 8-3 in the second game of the women's doubles bronze medal match when heavy rain forced an overnight delay. They worried all night about losing momentum and struggled to sleep. After warming up for an hour the next morning, they managed to close out the match 11-5. However, the near-empty stadium lacked the typical electricity of medal matches. The unique COVID-19 protocols prevented crowds. Leigh felt the outdoor courts were actually more lively, saying "the people were just stacked and they were so close to you and that energy and there were way more people on the outside courts than there were at least it felt that way." Anna Leigh agreed "100 percent" that the outdoor crowd was more energetic. [5] 7:45 How did you first hear about Pickleball? The Waters family discovered pickleball while evacuated in Pennsylvania during Hurricane Irma in 2017. With limited entertainment options, they started playing pickleball at local parks - using borrowed wooden paddles at first. Leigh said they "loved it from the moment we were on the court we were hooked." Upon returning to Florida, they joined the Delray Beach Pickleball Club which introduced them to competitive tournaments. Delray hosted Anna Leigh's first-ever tournament. [6] 8:38 Paddletek paddles? The Delray tournament marked the beginning of the Waters' partnership with paddle company Paddletek. Founder Ken Fried saw a 10-year-old Anna Leigh playing and put a Paddletek TS5 in her hands - the same paddle she still uses today. Leigh initially played with a Selkirk paddle but switched to Paddletek around the time of the U.S. Open as well. She said "here we are today" playing exclusively with Paddletek paddles. [7] 9:57 What is your racket sports background? Anna Leigh has played tennis since age 8, competing in both tennis and pickleball for a while until focusing exclusively on pickleball during COVID. She believes tennis still helps her pickleball game and wants to play occasionally again. Leigh was a competitive junior player who earned a Division 1 tennis scholarship at the University of South Carolina. She played #1 singles and doubles all four years, quitting tennis after graduating. But when 8-year-old Anna Leigh wanted to learn tennis, Leigh picked her racket back up for a few years until discovering pickleball. [8] 11:13 How good/bad were you in your very first game? The Waters admit they were "probably terrible" in their first-ever pickleball game, mostly hitting tennis groundstrokes. Anna Leigh mused they were "good and bad" - impressing novices with their power while confusing experienced players by violating pickleball-specific strategy. Leigh recalled missing many nuanced pickleball shots early on, like returns off of tricky third-shot drops. [9] 12:32 When was your first tournament? How’d you do? Leigh's first tournament was the Delray Beach Open. She lost every match in the 5.0 women's bracket to vastly more experienced players like Andrea Coop. But she found more success partnering with seasoned player Stacy Townsend and winning the 4.5 mixed title with her dad. During the event, Anna Leigh's talent was so apparent that organizers bumped her mid-tournament from 3.0 to 3.5. [10] 13:58 Who is your favorite player to play against? Why? For Leigh, fellow top pro Andrea Koop is her favorite opponent. Their familiarity with each other's game leads to "so many inside jokes" and funny on-court moments. Anna Leigh enjoys facing off against Irina Tereschenko, citing their "mutual respect" and Tereschenko's wittiness even during intense points. [11] 15:20 Who is your least favorite player to play against? Why? Anna Leigh named her mom as her least favorite opponent, an easy choice given their awkward mother-daughter dynamic. Leigh wholeheartedly agreed: "I'll play anybody before playing her." They get anxious whenever they see they've been drawn to play one another and actively hope to land on opposite sides of a tournament bracket. [12] 16:36 What is your favorite shot? For Anna Leigh, her go-to is the backhand roll from the kitchen that she's trying to name. She loves how it comes in handy for mixed doubles. Leigh's favorite is the forehand speed-up shot from the kitchen, allowing her to seize offensive control of points. [13] 19:26 Where is your favorite place to play? Anna Leigh cherishes the electric atmosphere of the stadium court at the Indian Wells National Championships. Leigh points to Delray Beach where she started competing. The local club's first tournament holds special meaning as her pickleball origin story. [14] 20:02 What does your pre-match/tournament regiment look like? The Waters have an unconventional routine of eating a big Italian dinner the night before matches, then eating lightly in the morning. Anna Leigh isn't a big breakfast fan. They arrive about an hour early to warm up, take a break, then warm up again right before taking the court so they don't get cold. They say a prayer beforehand and listen to pump-up music, usually a rap song Anna Leigh plays that Leigh tries to sing along to. [15] 21:23 What’s one thing in your bag that people wouldn’t expect? Anna Leigh uses her bag to store medals from past pickleball and soccer tournaments, finding random medals buried in there from months or years ago. Leigh always carries unused server bands on her shoes and bag, building a collection over time that she can provide to other players if needed.

The Rapid Rise and Complex Challenges of Professional Pickleball Legal Issues, Funding Questions, and Influx of Elite Talent Reshape the Competitive World of the Fastest Growing Sport “In five years nobody who’s a top five player today will be a top five player,” predicts attorney Jim Kloss, an experienced pickleball player. Kloss, who spoke exclusively on The Golden Boy Podcast, knows the legal complexities shaping professional pickleball as well as anyone. With decades of experience as an equity partner at two national law firms defending major corporations in lawsuits and civil claims, he understands the contractual issues threatening to undermine the sport's meteoric growth. Yet as a high-level player himself and pickleball devotee since 2012, he can also assess the play on the court and likely trajectory of the game. “It’s a really interesting time for pickleball,” Kloss says, adeptly synthesizing his legal and on-court perspectives. “What’s pickleball going to look like five to ten years from now?” At the recreational level, pickleball’s explosion in popularity shows no signs of slowing down. But in the competitive sphere, tensions roil beneath the surface. With two rival leagues - the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) and Major League Pickleball (MLP) - recently agreeing to a merger after previous failed negotiations, complex legal questions swirl. “It is a huge legal hairball,” warns Kloss. “These are really complicated legal issues." Chief among those issues are anti-trust and monopoly concerns. By combining two of professional pickleball’s major entities, legal experts say the proposed merged league could potentially run afoul of anti-trust laws if it gains too much market control and reduces players’ contract negotiating leverage. “Does it have anti-trust implications?” asks Kloss. “Are they creating monopoly power?” The unclear legal status of current player contracts poses another obstacle. If the merger proceeds, existing contracts may need to be renegotiated or could potentially even be void, creating messy complications. Moreover, the new unified structure will have to determine whether players are categorized as independent contractors or employees - a crucial designation carrying major real-world consequences. “It affects the freedom of the employee but also affects what duties and obligations the employer has,” explains Kloss, highlighting the nuances of employment law. Despite these legal headaches, Kloss believes the merger makes sense for fans and the growth of the sport. “From a fan perspective, it is good to have a unified structure where the best players face off,” he says. Previously, top stars were fractured across the two leagues. The key question now becomes: where will the money come from to fund it all? Kloss estimates the MLP will need approximately $25 million next year just to meet its player contract obligations. With significant TV and sponsorship deals still elusive for pickleball, experts are skeptical about future revenue streams. “I’m just pointing out that this is all very fascinating to watch unfold in front of us,” says popular pickleball commentator Scott Golden, who interviewed Kloss for this article. “But nobody seems to be saying where the money is coming from.” Of course, the other looming issue is whether competitive pickleball can evolve into a viable spectator sport with millions of viewers. That outcome would unleash crucial TV dollars, but is far from assured. “Can it be big at both?” asks Kloss, questioning if the booming recreational participation will ever translate to mass appeal for watching professionals. He notes the nuanced mastery of top players like Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters may fascinate dedicated pickleball aficionados. But for average sports fans, the chess-like matches emphasizing strategy over flashy rallies could prove boring compared to other athletic offerings. Ultimately, pickleball may need to attract legions of new fans beyond those who actually play to drive the viewership numbers major sponsors demand. Some suggest singles matches showcasing individual athleticism could hold more appeal to the casual observer than the current doubles focus. Yet there is reason for optimism that the influx of elite talent from other professional sports - drawn by increasingly lucrative pickleball purses and endorsement deals - could revolutionize the game’s competitive future. Former top tennis pros like Jack Sock bring power and athleticism rivaled by few current pickleball players. As even younger tennis standouts make the jump to pickleball, attracted by the option to extend their pro careers, the level of play could take a dramatic leap. Meanwhile, the first generation of players who grow up focusing on pickleball from childhood will also raise the game’s caliber. “That player is coming,” says Kloss, “and they’re going to be really good.” What will the professional pickleball landscape look like when today’s top players have surrendered their thrones? Whether solved through mergers or exacerbated by legal disputes, the current growing pains appear part of an inevitable transition. Both on and off the court, pickleball’s development from niche hobby to major competitive sport promises twists and turns ahead. For attorney Jim Kloss and other keen observers, the coming evolution will certainly be fascinating to watch. As Kloss says, “It’s really an interesting time for pickleball.” Summary: This article covers the rapid changes in professional pickleball and key issues shaping its future trajectory. It examines concerns around the proposed PPA/MLP merger, including anti-trust and contractual complications. Funding player contracts and achieving viability as a televised spectator sport present additional challenges. However, an influx of talent from other sports and younger players focused solely on pickleball seem likely to transform competitive play. Legal expert Jim Kloss provides insightful perspective on these topics as pickleball transitions from recreational pastime to major league sport facing growing pains. The next decade promises to dramatically reshape pickleball’s professional competitive landscape in the courts and beyond.

Key Insights from a Legal Perspective on the Professional Pickleball Landscape Questions from a Conversation with Attorney and Pickleball Player Jim Kloss This podcast features Scott Golden discussing the professional pickleball landscape with guest Jim Kloss, an attorney and experienced pickleball player. They cover a range of topics related to the current state of professional organizations like the PPA, APP, and MLP, as well as player contracts, the potential for TV coverage, and predictions for the future of the sport. 0:29 What is Jim Kloss' background in law and pickleball? Recap: Jim Kloss worked as an equity partner at two different law firms, specializing in defending civil lawsuits like contract claims and personal injury cases, often representing corporations. He retired about 5 years ago but keeps his law license active to help friends and people in need. He was a high level tennis player who transitioned to pickleball around 2012. He has played hundreds of tournaments and earned a medal at nationals. He now focuses more on recreational play at his home courts. 15:21 What are some key legal issues with the potential PPA/MLP merger? Recap: One legal issue is anti-trust and monopoly concerns, since the merger would combine two of the major entities in professional pickleball. This could potentially reduce players' abilities to negotiate contracts between multiple leagues. Another issue is the legal status of player contracts, whether they will carry over or need to be renegotiated. There are also questions around whether players will be independent contractors or employees under the new organization. In addition, there are complex choice of law issues regarding which state's laws apply to contracts and disputes. 30:17 Does the potential merger make sense for the overall sport? Recap: Jim believes the merger does make sense for having all the top players compete against each other, rather than having divisions where some top players are in the PPA and others in the MLP. While there may be legal or other issues with the deal, from a fan perspective it is good for the sport to have a unified structure where the best players face off. 46:01 Where will the money come from to fund player contracts? Recap: Jim discusses how the MLP will need a significant amount of money to fund player contracts, with his estimate being at least $25 million just for 2024 contracts. It's unclear where this money will come from. Initial franchise sales provide some revenue but can't sustain long-term costs. The goal seems to be attracting sponsors and TV deals, but pickleball is still a long way from viewership numbers needed to support major TV contracts. Jim is skeptical about current sources being sufficient. 56:53 Will pickleball be viable long-term as a recreational and spectator sport? Recap: Jim thinks pickleball will continue growing exponentially as a recreational sport, but questions if it can become a top spectator sport with millions of viewers. The skill level of top pros creates matches that are fascinating to dedicated players, but average viewers may find them boring compared to other spectator sports. Pickleball may need to attract non-players to build a large TV audience. Jim discusses whether singles or doubles is more entertaining for spectators. 1:05:49 How will the caliber of players from other sports affect pickleball? Recap: As higher caliber tennis converts like Jack Sock come to pickleball, they could bring elite athleticism that takes the game to a new level. If younger tennis pros in their 20s start transitioning, it will provide even more talent infusion. Eventually some young players may choose to dedicate themselves to pickleball from a young age and achieve greatness having focused on it full-time. The combination of skills from other sports and players who grow up training in pickleball will lead to dramatic changes. Recap Summary: This podcast covers a wide range of pickleball topics from the perspective of attorney Jim Kloss. Key issues discussed include legal complexities with the potential PPA/MLP merger, questions around funding for player contracts, whether pickleball can become a top spectator sport, and predictions for how an influx of talent from other sports along with younger players focused on pickleball will reshape the competitive landscape in coming years. Kloss provides thoughtful analysis stemming from his legal expertise and passion for pickleball.

PEDs, there are definitely over 100 of them, each with it's own benefits and bad side effects. Some PEDs help you recover much more quickly and increase your endurance. A tired person isn't going to be able to dink at their level like a person that isn't tired. The other Scott seems to imply pickleball isn't a strength required sport. We know the top male players are going to beat the top women players in singles. In my own personal opinion Ben looks like he has gained at least 10 pounds in the last year or two. This can be done naturally though. As far as Adderall it mostly helps people do things that they don't like doing. Adderall also greatly increases your heart rate, which is not good. And yes Adderall is banned in major sports. Simone Biles is prescribed Adderall, and that has become controversial. A cheap way to get started with testing is announce that in 2024 all pro medalists will be drug tested. Then they can say top 10 ranked players will be randomly tested at least once a year.

The reason why Anna Leigh dominates is she learned the game as a young child. This is the way Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, etc learned tennis. Nothing against someone like Anna Bright who picked the game at a relatively late age. Someone who started the game so early like Anna Leigh will dominate players who pick it up very late.

Jeez. A bit defensive or what? :-) I suppose the reason @JefferyJeffRyan brought it up is that, like me, he probably watched 10 videos, and nobody seems to show the entire process. Which definitely makes me skeptical. There is one video of some old guys screwing around with it, and it is painful to watch. It would be nice to see someone show the entire process start to finish. Maybe prop your phone up on the fence somewhere and start recording? Thanks for taking the time for what you did show, but my constructive feedback would be that it needs to show the entire process, including dumping it. Did you get a discount for posting the video?

What is this 😅? Here I have this magic wand that dries a court. See, here you have a wet court and poof! It's dry! Buy my magic wand!

Go to: www.vaptr.com to check them out. Not magic at all. It’s a real machine used to pull up water and moisture off the courts.

@@Kartertheblackmamba My best friend is a mechanical engineer with a 170 IQ. He agrees. True. Having the means to make this would be difficult no more than if you tried to make a pencil on your own. It's still way overpriced

Would this be good to practice 3rd shot drops? Wonder why everyone thinks groundstroke practice is so great oh thats so you do not have to learn a 3rd shot.

If you get the chance, you gotta go to the Gili Islands which are technically part of Lombok, Indonesia (the island next to Bali). One of my favorite places we've ever been.
