Draw Steel RPG: First impressions of the Shadow Class
Classic TTRPG shenanigans! I once had my players CONVINCED an NPC was secretly working for the villain just to find out he was hiding a secret, but it was that he was in love with one of the party members 😂 so that's why he always acted so nervous around them
Hahaha that’s awesome Robin😆
Thanks for sharing your experience with the system, definitely feeling inspired. Love the flexibility that you can use events to break up longer respites, how that can shape and inform the stuff that players are doing during that respite, and how you can satisfy the needs of both kinds of players
It’s so awesome! We played last night and I chucked in a random event with an ankheg, which has now set up a dilemma for the players to choose between further respite or saving a friend.
These respite concepts sound great in theory, but it seems like Draw Steel stays to vague for the concepts to actually be innovative / groundbreaking; which is unfortunate when these are the $4 million “game changing” concepts they’re giving us. It forces players to then define our own use’s for - which you did wonderfully as presented in this video! Just feels lazy or incomplete over innovative as larger time gaps in resting is not anything game changing…
In fairness we’re still working with a game in development, we’ve yet to see an edited, laid out version with all the guidance. I also don’t know about innovative or game changing, but they’ve definitely codified downtime in a way that fun for my group! I think we really need to see examples of play, and that’ll come in the first written adventure. Rules in vacuum can be a little hard to grok.
This is some seriously good advice. Thank you for sharing! Please keep it up!
even at max volume, it is all but impossible to hear you.
I was really wondering about this after reading the tactician and how they can stop combat more efficiently to start a negotiation. Thank you for this actionable example :)
I'm glad to help! The tactician in particular engages with this system through its early features, as does the troubadour if memory serves. Our vanguard tactician loves it and feels like it injects a "commander" vibe outside of combat.
I'm very much looking forward to Draw Steel's full debut. My current 3-player group (not counting myself) is in the middle of a D&D campaign, but I'm hoping to switch them over to Draw Steel after the full release which should coincide with the conclusion of our campaign. I've been telling them all about different aspects of the game from the playtest packets and even decided to use the negotiation rules in our D&D game just to give them a taste of it. Two of the players enjoyed the encounter but the other was a bit frustrated by it. However, they did say that trying to get acclimated to the rules would have been easier in a low-stakes situation---which this was definitely NOT. Still, I think they'll all enjoy the new game once they have time to try it out.
Yeah we did something similar last year, and it didn’t really click with them. It’s easier once they start playing Draw Steel but it’s still taken a little while for them to get used to the idea. That’s true from the Director end too, i’ve made a bunch of mistakes with it and thankfully the players trust the process.
This video about Negotiations helped a ton more! - Thanks for posting! 🙏
This confused me more than helped me understand the system 😅 Subscribed to hopefully learn more as it’s structured better. (:
Sorry about that! So Negotiation is a mechanical tool to structure certain conversations with NPCs. It has to be instigated by the players, but the director can build a “stat block” of sorts, I’m just saying here that players might want to use the rules when the director hasn’t prepared, so I’m glad there are some templates and I think if that’s how the system gets commonly used, we might see the rules reflect that at some point.
Solid RP!
Thanks!
I haven't been following DS closely enough to know if this system has changed significantly. But this was a good video and I thought it could use more attention.
Thanks! The negotiation system changed an awful lot in the early days, but I don't think its changed much in the last six months. I'm looking forward to seeing the final version but I think its usefulness will depend on the community. Unlike a montage or combat, it really is on the players to call for it - which means they might call for it when you're not ready!
Heated 😂
I wish you guys the best in your game.
Thanks! Hope yours is great too!
Your audio is super quiet. Needed to crank my volume way high to hear you. Other than that, thank you for the very informative video. :)
I really love getting commissioned artwork for TTRPG characters. Nothing comes close for representing your character.
It’s wonderful, the right artist just brings your imagination to life!
Secondary title: The power of subtle movements (you can drive players into high conspiracy over a cinnamon bun using this)
This true!
The only way this sounds remotely ok is if the flavor in the failure states are evocative of the theme of the class and what they’re attempting.
It’s more like, you can still have a bad roll, you needed the extra damage or the bonus effect really badly, but SOMETHING always happens, you always make some progress, you’re just racing the monster to see who gets to Victory first. - Sam
@ ya I remember when they were describing the system somewhat like epic spellduels of the battle wizards of mt. Skullzfire. I would be excited if each “move” had diffferent and creative low and high points. I think that would be evocative and exciting.
@@Lunarvandross S purely from a SIgnature(basic) ability perspective you might get like: <11: 2 damage 12-16: 6 damage push 1 17+: 9 damage and push 3 Effect: You may shift up to the number of squares you pushed the target.
@ I guess I don’t understand why that 2 damage is there. Like, if you peel back the curtain doesn’t it bloat monster hp and have the same effect as a miss?
If the <11 was like, push 1, no damage or deal 4 take 2 dmg, I could get behind it.
Missing feels bad and like a waste of time
I think so too! - Sam
Yeah, the spring were the clockwork children I believe.
I can weirdly picture the scene where the Chain fought them but not their actual appearance - Sam
I was struggling with the sizing of the text a bit until someone in the discord recommended a free pdf editor. That let me change the size ofnthe text so everything would fit
You... wouldn't happen to have the link to that editor still, would you? 0:)
@bryanv1681 pdf-xchange is the one that they recommended and worked pretty well.
I really like the new character sheet, a bit of a shame, that there aren't class specific sheets anymore
I wouldn’t count it out! I think that’s the kind of thing they’d like to do, but is more post-production
Backer Packet #2 just released!

Another great recap 😃
Glad you enjoyed it!
Even heroes fail. The Heroic part is making the best of it and carrying on.
@@JosephHeller-el8zo totally agree! This system (and others like it) aren’t devoid of failure! In fact even middle tier checks bring a consequence with your success which I’ve found keeps the tension and ensures the narrative is always moving forward at a good pace. What everyone always hitting (enemies too) in combat means that even at the lowest tier of damage, something is always happening. No chance of bad rolls slogging up combat and leaving players feeling bored and consistently unheroic if the dice aren’t playing ball. That’s been our experience anyway! Give it a try with a tier system you might be surprised☺️ C
A lot of ppl, myself included, thought this was insane. Then I watched the video where Matt explained the reasoning. So, for those of you who don't know: it's not about "failure isn't fun," it's about "nothing happening isn't fun." You've waited 20 minutes for your turn to come around, you roll the die, it's a miss, next guy. It's not about never failing, it's about eliminating the null state. So, yes, you always hit (missing also isnt something heroes in action movies tend to do, which is the vibe they're going for, so reason #2), but you can fail to do damage and have something bad happen in return. I haven't kept up with the dev diaries, so idk what the status of this is atm, but that was the explanation I got, and honestly, it's brilliant.
The concept sounds fine in principle, though it just depends on the pacing of the games combat. For a fast paced game a miss is not a big deal, though for slow paced games like D&D it drags things out. As a TTRPG dev myself, my current project is more so based on "It's not that you missed, but rather that the enemy succeded" in design since it is hard to miss in the game, but you get reactions to use to try and avoid, parry, or use magic to stop an attack. An Xcom style system where speed paired with low health and stat based damage keeps things moving quickly even if one player misses a strike. So I can see how it might work for Draw Steel, but at the same time it really depends on how quick or bloated they make the comabt system which determines the pacing.
I often forget to include weather, which is awful on my part because half my adventures and scenarios tend to happen outdoors. I was using the simple random d20 roll that Level Up A5E included with all the different terrain/biome types in Trials & Treasures, but fell off of that. Lately I've been interested in these hex flower weather generation systems, I think the version by Goblin's Henchman is the one that gets the most attention. Basically the hex flower minimizes unlikely results: e.g. you're not likely to have a day of clear sunshine followed by a downpour unless there's a day of overcast skies in between, but it's also not impossible. And you can remap the hex flower for results more likely for your climate, like if you have a coastal region where clear skies and downpours can be separated by hours.
Hey DM’s have a lot to juggle so don’t be too hard on yourself! That’s why I tend to just roll that d6 before the session however that system sounds really cool! I’ll need to check it out, love how it takes into consideration the likely weather patterns 😮 Cx
Very good point! We’ve mostly been the same outside of the very slim amount of interactions where conditions bolster spells. Though in our most recent Draw Steel game one PC does have the ability to effect the weather after every respite which does interact certain skills which was pretty cool! It was extra foggy so our sneak and hide skills were impacted. The kingdom management definitely adds another layer to the campaign and it’s great idea to tie the weather into that☺️
I haven't played in a campaign that does anything with weather other than use it to set a specific scene - as you say, "it's dark and dreary out." Or else, it'll be location-specific, as in "you go north and LOOK there's snow everywhere," or "you go south and LOOK it's hot out." I have home-brewed a system for seasons and weather, but that is tied to a sort of "kingdom management" set of house rules, where weather impacts crop yields, how easy it is to travel, etc. Without the rest of the kingdom management stuff, the weather parts wouldn't have a lot of meaningful impact.
Nice! I'm a sucker for campaign diaries since I find actual plays too slow to watch. I would not have thought to leave the players with such a long period of time for self-directed activity, but it seems to have worked out great! Lots of drama going on. :)
Don't worry Into the Odd already knows 😝

@@davidwatches so are we! Obviously things are still developing but we are really loving what we’ve been playing so far with the system 🙌 -Courtney
This is by NO means a Draw Steel idea, I implemented this 4 years ago in my TTRPG system based on inspiration from M&L and many others TTRPG’s that use a no-miss Tier system. It’s normally referred to as ‘Base Damage’ for minimal tier damage along with systems that implement ‘Scathe Damage’ so that you always do some damage. Wake me up when they learn how to break away from D&D by getting rid of basic player action’s & bonus action economy system’s; they came close with the tried & true ‘resource system’ but missed the marker cause they’re still stuck in the perpetual TTRPG player action economies. They got good ideas but it’s by no means ever some game breaking original idea. Other than renaming thing’s, Draw Steel took that matchbox from other TTRPG’s, not the other way around along with all their other game mechanic’s being linked to other wonderful game system’s. I invite you to sign an NDA with me if you want to see some actual out of the TTRPG box thinking if you think this is what needs matched… x)
@@9HPRuneScape yeah like most RPG’s all of the mechanics aren’t wholly original but it is the first we’d played as a group with a tier system that guarantees minimum damage. We’ve found it a very refreshing experience coming from years of dnd and the established world and character creation process has been a real pleasure to explore. Like you’ve alluded to there’s lots out there that’s more mechanically removed from dnd but we’ve found Draw Steel still feels like a unique experience with our RPG background and I think a lot of groups would feel the same. Or at least I hope so as we’ve certainly been having a great time! Good luck with developing your system, that’s very exciting! - Courtney
@@DontShoutMimic All those points I’d agree with; I was referring to how the video was titled and projected as if “Is any other TTRPG systems going to get on Draw Steels level” when their current mechanics are mostly older TTRPG’s that they’ve fused together but renamed; thus, that aspect of the video is simply not the case imo.
@@9HPRuneScape Just having a wee bit of fun with a popular sound on tiktok as a way to share a new system we’ve been really excited about☺️
Inge is great, and the party looks incredible. I've found that custom art for characters really accelerates attachment, to the point that one of our players who normally likes to try a different character after 8-10 sessions kept going with their first one because of how cool the art was.
They are! Yeah, we're finding that, we maybe jumped the gun a little but we're sticking with these for a little bit at least!
Good lighting and clarity, but the audio is pretty low. Peeking at OBS it's showing an average around -30 db. That's going to be very hard for people to hear who are on mobile. Remember too DH is designed so you can do whatever. You, as the GM, CAN still make the world and everything in it if you want to. The core design of DH though is so that you 'share the burden'. That can greatly reduce the amount of prep time the GM needs to do. Also DH is aimed at a more TTRPG new player/GM, so sharing that load not only helps speed up things to get to the actual playing of the thing, but it makes it specific to that group, as well as incorporating ideas from, hopefully, everyone, so everyone feels included in making this thing what it is. Even if you use a premade setting with modules (like there were 2 in the beta material so far) your group's playthrough will be different from someone else's due to those open ended segments. As opposed to something like a D&D game which says this is X, that is Y, and groups playing will have far fewer differences between them. We may yet see an Exandria setting with DH, but I'm betting we won't. It's their own new system, with their own new world. I think we will see a restart of a new world setting they will be playing in when they do the December live stream. They probably won't carry the characters over since they will be, I think, randomly created for the stream, but I'd put high bets that will be the world/setting they use for whatever DH campaign they start following it. Also, I'd bet a big part of not using it is to be their own thing. Exandria started in Pathfinder and then moved into D&D, so there's an association with those game systems. For that reason alone I think they will want to avoid it. (And I wouldn't be surprised if even print material differs from D&D and Pathfinder layout and 'trade dressing', like the typical parchment colored pages you see with those.)
Hello! Courtney here. First of all thank you for the audio advice, we are still learning and it’s much appreciated. Figured we didn’t want to stop putting out content in the meantime😊 Im quite excited about the shared worldbuilding and you make some great points, very much looking forward to seeing what different groups end up coming up with and the difference that may have on the kind of stories they tell and the adventures that unfold😮 I can see why it’s not for everyone but we’re gonna try and win over ol Sam here 😂 We’re planning on checking back in once we start playing and really get a chance to experience gameplay with the shared worldbuilding at its core! I also agree with you, I’m in love with Exandria and there’s definitely still stories to tell (and threads I hope we get wrapped up) but I believe they’ll start fresh and highlight this more unique aspect of the RPG (at least in terms of the most popular within the space rn) when the new stream begins. Very exciting stuff either way! 😊🎲
I wasted too much time trying to prep everything, and it definitely took away from opportunities I had to run games, especially when you add in the amount of time I thought I had to take to create everyone's characters. Anything that can speed up the process is always better if it results in actual *play* time. And this book looks great. Wish I'd had one-shots when I started. Less waste = more fun. Also, your audio is fine.
I’m a massive advocate of just getting started, any play is better than none. I think preparation builds anticipation, which amounts to anxiety for some of us. The only way to get confidence is by experience so whatever helps get that going is a massive help! - Sam
