"Farewell to Cheongpa-Dong" on Hayden Duet Concertina
Farewell to Cheongpa-Dong (a.k.a. Farewell to Green Hill).
I wrote this strathspey in the fond memory of two weeks I spent with my mother in Cheongpa-Dong, 청파동 (Which translates to "Green Hill District"), Seoul, Korea.

"Sunday's Well" on Hayden Duet Concertina Catching up months in days #5. A beautiful waltz composed by Caitlín Nic Gabhann caught my ears and heart immediately when I heard it played by Tony a great Banjo player in a Melbourne session. It was interesting trying to something to imitate/replace the beautiful articulation that comes naturally from the anglo concertina by the composer. Sunday's Wel...

Three Polkas on Hayden Duet Concertina Sweeney's - Prelude - Spanish Lady Catching up months in days #3. Didn't add lefthand bass part here as it would sound messy in the fast paced set with my limited skill. A Fig for a Kiss - Kid on the Mountain (Slip Jigs)
You playing this instrument convinced me I needed this. So, I bought one and am learning this song. I have watched most of your videos with you playing it and I am teaching myself to play. I cannot read music but went to the session and downloded the abc format and am getting there. I learned how to use/interpret the abc format and it is easier than I thought it would be. Thank you so much for doing these and inspiring so many others too. They ought to be giving you a commission for all of us buying this instrument because of you or give you an upgrade but let you keep the Elise also.
@@catstale883 I am so glad that my playing get you to start playing one. Thank you for thanking me, it means a lot and keeps me going. Learning by ear is a powerful way of learning these tunes, even more so as most of the folk tunes I played are of aural traditions themselves. I try to put up the sheetmusic lino but that is for more documenting purposes and because there are people who ask for it too (people have different ways). I recommend you to use 'play audio' feature in thesession.org. You can play the melody in MiDI and set the repeat and speed. Very useful in trying to learn the tune aurally. Have fun!
@@MinimumListenableProduct I did use the "play audio" feature to listen to it (I keep coming back over here though to hear your version, it is the best imo) but didn't realise I could adjust the speed and have it repeat. Thank you for tellng me that. It will help. However, I can adjust the speed here on your video on youtube and have figured out a lot that way. I guess we all have different ways of learning and this is working for me. Maybe others can learn this way too.
Lovely tune.
Thanks for your lovely comment!
Nicely done. Had to have a look/listen as Andy Rigby's a friend of ours :) He is often at The Lost Trades Fair in Bendigo in March. Cheers and have a Happy Christmas, from Central Victoria (I'm learning the English Concertina but very early days).
Hey I'm so glad to be connected via our inspiring mutual friend Andy Rigby! Wish to visit in Bendigo one day. Happy holidays and have fun with English concertina! Wony
@@MinimumListenableProduct :) Lost Trades Fair is well worth going to, and I'll be definitely hunting out Andy to show him the new instrument. He knows me as Duncan the Shoemaker (retired). The Concertina's by Jabez Austin, who originally made reed pans for Charles Wheatstone before setting out on his own in 1850. 32 button, and took a great deal of work to clean all the verdegris off the brass reeds, at a friends clockmaking workshop, to get them all to work XD Thanks for the reply and Cheers
A darling tune!
Oh thank you!
Very nice!
Thank you!
This tune makes me weep and your play with the timing and lead ins toward repeats are so motivating.
Thank you very much. This tune captivated me like that too when I first heard.
This video is what inspired me to finally get an Elise. This video helped me realize "it's a duet concertina and it sounds great when you play duets", that is. Been playing for 90 days (also self taught) and finally came back and watched this and thought "Oh wow this tune doesn't have any fourth jumps which means this guy Andy Cutting probably wrote it FOR concertina and now I have to find him". :D
wow I am glad that I made some positive impact to your journey and also glad that we are taking the same path of self learning and this amazing instrument just intuitively let us tach ourselves. Never realised but that's right indeed, having no fourth makes Hayden playing so easier. Good observation - or good way to put it.
I love to listen to you play. How long have you been playing the concertina? I'm thinking of getting a Hayden Elise to start with. I'm in my early eighties now and I hope I can learn to play it before too long. Thank you for your videos and the music links.
Thank you! It is about my 5th year into hayden concertina and you could check out some of the earlier videos in this channel to gauge how you could sound soon. Pretty much in a few days I was able to play some tunes I know by memory. There are always more to learn to play better but in my opinion the hayden system concertina is one of the easiest instruments that humans have ever invented. So I definitely encourage you to start - also Elise is a fine instrument.
I just got one for my 50th birthday a month and a half ago. I have a music background but not done anything serious with it for the last 3 decades, but I still got to the point of being able to play very quickly. If you have previous experience it'll click - the hard part for me is I have limited keyboard experience (mostly reed instruments) so I've also been teaching myself to play two different notes at the same time. If you have some previous skills you'll get it! One thing I'll say is I also got to the point very quickly where I realized the Elise is a beginner instrument. Be prepared for some "oh wow that reed sounds funny" and some tinkering and adjusting. It's also considerably louder than I was expecting.
@@fisharmor Thanks for adding your perspectives here. I am sure it will give a good idea on the Hayden learning experience for our future Hayden club members. I also has no experience in chord playing, just the basic theoretical knowledge. So learning a tune on Hayden for me is to start from playing a melody only on the right then to add simple chords on the left by hit and miss until it works okay.
Your playing is very nice, lots of feeling. I am planning on getting Peacock in six weeks, but will have my Elise this week. Will use you as inspiration.
Not a lot of Peacock playing on youtube. How exciting! Thanks for your feedback. I think one of the advantages of Hayden over the Anglo system is that the player can determine when to articulate and how much dynamics, which makes it easier to carry feeling.
Cool!
Thanks for your videos. I have a Hayden Duet and this encourages me to keep practicing. Your songs are lovely.
Very kind of you. Your comment encourages me and keeps me practicing too!
Beautiful 👍❤️
excellent
Many many thanks
Beautiful and thank you for sharing. I am on week three of learning my 30 button anglo concertina and love it. So far four simple songs learned and going forward.....
THANK YOU! Please share your some of your playing on Anglo. Welcome to the club!
Very pretty
THANK YOU!
Beautiful!
Thanks dad!
This sounds so much better as an air than as a barn dance. Lovely.
Thank you so much for your comment. Agreed!
I see you now have a Troubadour. I’m thinking of trading in my Elise for one. What do you think of yours? I love your playing btw!!
Hey long time. I am happy with the upgrade(trade-in). I was also happy with Elise and was in doubt if it is worth paying that much for 2-3 extra keys. For me yes. These additional few keys unlock several ‘scales’ that are actually used frequently e.g. A major and E major. That is a huge difference for me when I play with others. The size wasn’t the consideration but I am actually loving the small size of Troubdour. It now comfortably fits within large backpack or carry-on luggage. Sound wise, I want to believe it is better but it is not as obvious as other two improvements. So if I played G major all the time and no need to travel at all, I would be still happy with Elise.
Thanks for your reply. That’s really helped me with my decision. The Elise is nice but I do find some of those low basses pretty hard to “fire”. Looking forward to more of your vids! Great work you’re doing.
This is, so very nice. ❤🎵🎶
Glad you like it!
@@MinimumListenableProduct I do, I also appreciate the fact that you took the time to share your sheet music with the world. 🤠
Lovely
Great tune. Well played
thank you!
Too bad about the strange video quality, but nice playing. Can you tell us the maker of this Hayden?
It is concertina connection in the U.S.
❤
I have stumbled upon a hidden gem 🎵 Keep up the good work 💜
indeed a gem. Please play on your piano.
So serene, thanks again.
Thank you! how's your playing going?
Beautiful. Thank you.
I thank you!
Very good to hear your lovely performance again~~^^
Likewise Lunar, it's lovely to hear from you again. it has been ages!
Is there any way you would be kind enough to ply the left hand on its own please?
thesession.org/tunes/12492 I have written down the bass note of the chords on lefthand side in the setting 3 of this tune in this webpage. See those alphabetical markings. I think I mostly stick yo the bass note only and occasionally adding 3rd and 5th. Hopefully it helps...
Thank you so much
Thanks! 🙂😎
Sounds really nice. Do you still play.
I’ve been playing an English system concertina for 20 years. Last year, after visiting Concertine Italia, I bought one of their Hayden Duet’s. I’ve been using it for a year, and am just starting to integrate the treble and bass sides. Your videos have been very helpful. Thank you. Here is a link to a video of my visit to the concertina factory: ruclips.net/video/2ypFYSbA678/видео.htmlsi=sNFe2j0NdddmSlSh
That lead-in was absolutely majestic, and smooth as glass.
really glad you liked the lead-in. this 'rondeau' type waltz has so much potential for a bit of improvised fun
Well played. Keep on doing your thing 😊
glad it helped. indeed I saw your video months ago and it was immensely helpful. Great respect for makers of not commercially so popular instrument and yourself filming it. I think it helps more people know about their effort, nobility and credibility.
Is that the elise? You play very well
Thanks. Yes it is Elise. I probably sound better that I actually do because I have recorded right and left hand part separately. As you can imagine, that way has a benefit of being able to control the dynamics and articulation of each part independently as intended.
My daughter was quite an accomplished pianist when she was a kid. Now she’s 26 and we just fulfilled the last wish of her childhood that we had never before entertained….a concertina. Well played!
Thank you and I recommend your daughter to pick up Hayden duet concertina which would make immediate sense to accomplished piano players who are experts at using two hands to play two independent parts.
Beautiful! I bet everyone that watches this video feel like buying one and trying to make some music. So tiny and portable.
Nice!! Well done.
Nice! Very, very nice. Please post some more videos.
You have such a 'feel' for the music and your instrument. It all flows so well together.
That was beautiful. I just got a 20 button concertina to start learning to play. I'm pretty sure I should have just gotten a 2-button concertina. One button is for "On" and the other is for "Off." Damn, those things are complicated!
Thanks and welcome to the Concertina world! Indeed complicated and Sometimes I feel like playing just two notes G and D to support other musicians. Why not!
잘 들었습니다~ 대항해시대 ost느낌나고 좋네요^^
오 저도 좋아하는데. 대항해시대 음악을 녹음해봐야겠어요!
Beautiful rendintion! Keep it up!
Thanks!
I came here because I thought that it was written "The bitches full of stitches" . You are very good !😂
lol Thanks!
Just listened to this, beautiful playing!
Very nicely done. Good tone, definition and tempo. Now if Wim would make such an Elise with 53 reeds and 1/4" diameter buttons, for more bucks of course, well!
Thank you! I don't care much about cosmetics and don't mind cheap/non-trad materials and so on as long as sound is good, so I would have definitely considered if Elise came with such settings (with few more bucks).
Great ! once again
Thanks!
nice 🙂
Hello, great vid! I see you're also based in Australia - did you have to get that concertina imported? I've been looking to learn myself but its pretty much all expensive antiques
Hey thanks. Yes unfortunately there are only handful makers of Hayden system globally and Australia is usually not the most advantageous place to get those instruments made overseas. The instrument you see in this video Elise is the cheapest one and it is okay. Since it is below AUD1000 you can simply order internationally without having to pay GST. It will not arrive tomorrow though.
@@MinimumListenableProductI see, thanks so much for the info! I guess I'll take a gamble and try it out, thankyou
