So Very Sad. Loved working here. 😢
I only knew Cheetham Hill by the cinemas as my dad was a cinema equipment engineer. When the Odeon went to bowling the film equipment was removed and sent to several Manchester Odeon for spares. When the Temple was twined the second cinema had the most up to date equipment and in 1972 I was chief projectionist there for 9 months. The 2 projectors from the Green Hill cinema still exist in 2 private collections. I was the last person to run a reel of film at ABC(Premier) cinema after it closed and before we removed the sound equipment for which I was paid the princely sum of £2. One of the projector from the Globe was installed in the front room of a house on Rochdade Road.
Fabulous presentation. I lived in Wordsworth Avenue, cheetham, from 1979 to 1986 - was County Councillor for Cheetham and Harpurhey 1981 to 1986. Managed to lift a road widening blight on houses on Cheetham Hill Road opposite the Temple Twins Cinema so residents could get improvement grants. St Lukes Church, Smedlet Lane was being demolished in the early 1980s when rather late as I was not informed, I stopped the demolition work and save the tower and other remnants of a beautiful church. You brought back many good memorise - thank you for your dedication and efforts in saving valuable local history. By the way down derby Street there were Bowaters paper company and the Daily Herald offices from 1930s. Best wishes.
I currently live in faraday avenue which is the next street I wondered how did it look back then was the same as now
Hello Les , I’m a singer songwriter and friend of Martin Gittens , loved your video , i used to be a photographer and I saw a photo of yours of a black Morris minor outside the old Cheetham town hall , maybe it’s a coincidence but in the early nineties I took photos there and was in my black Morris minor , very best Tim
Realy enjoyed this.great memories..
I was an Apprentic Diesel and Electrical train Mechanic At Bury MPD when these trains were first introduced to replace the original old stock from 1918 which I had spent my first year working on. The 504 were at the time a Major advance on the old stock and much easier to work on. I am glad to learn that at least one of them has been preserved at Bury. I would love to be able re-visit the Sheds and sit at my old Bench ;)
What have we done to our country
Fab watching this. Any photos if Broomfield street which was off Halliwell Lane.

There was a cinema called the Shakespear somewhere of waterloo / Cheetham hill road. it became I think it became a supermarket.
Heartbreaking to see what has been done to the area it is now unrecognisable the pubs all gone all the old shops
Thank you so very much I 😢and😂I lived on the village I’m 75 but felt 16 years old remembering all the places I went:
Don't make them like that anymore
Great video, I currently live in cheetham hill so seeing this video is very educational. I’m 24 and have always been interested in my areas holistic history, keep up the work!!
Where's the evidence for this theory? Who are the 'elitists'? If this Les guy has done research he should be able to answer those 2 questions without being asked.
I needed to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it more bigger and extend it to bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford could they extend the DLR. All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. I should be very interested to know where Northgreaves St was situated, I believe it was in Cheetham but can't find any mention of it. My grandfather was born there. Thank you.
It's now Northgraves Drive off St James Road The original terraced street was demolished about 72
Thank you for your kind reply.@@robgibson6884

I would like to see this run again under it's own power as it could be done on batteries or by dragging it onto a 3rd rail line to test it out! For future rail tours maybe in the future!!!! 😎
It looked a great gala, but WHY does the Guard/Ticket collecter have to sit in the drivers cab and spoil the view for the many enthusiast's who have travelled miles to support these gala's.
Thank you for this. Lived on Cheetham Hill 1969-1970, behind St. Lukes Church, before moving to Prestwich and then Whitefield. Remember all the 'old' photo's.
With all due respect, the words "looks knackered" come to mind.
If I remember rightly the 504s got power from the side of the conductor rail rather than the top as with most third rail trains.
excellent comment
Enjoyed very much, thank you.
Did anyone else notice the number 2 sticker on the cab end above the windows when the unit came in, but it's gone later when they start back out again. Someone must've nicked it!
For those who don't know these old units are compatible with class 25 diesel loco's and they can still be driven from the unit cab with the loco providing the propulsion. The ELR actually had two of these units, and one had the words "the last survivor" sprayed down one side, and I took a photo of it in service, but they cut that one up, they should've kept that one instead, then it really would've been the last survivor. It must've been too knackered.
The IRA had another huge bomb lined up for England that never happened. They had the truck and it was a Ford cargo truck same as Manchester
Have you ever asked security forces ? They would of recognised the code warnings Research the Bishops gate and docklands bombs they were a carbon copy of Manchester One hour to clear the area Saturday morning Bomb size 5 ton

Thank you for the video. I commenced my mental health nurse training there in September 1987. I have very vague memories of the inside of the building but have fond memories of the patients and staff. I worked at Crescent Mount, a lovely large house on the grounds which has since been demolished. A clip from Cororantion Street was filmed there before it was demolished. I think it was the house of the person in charge of the workhouse
This is brilliant lots of memories...Great work thanks for posting !!
Always good to see our rail history preserved.
There have been many losses from the early BR electric era, where perhaps there were many classes of vehicles disregarded because they were just 'another electric train'. In this case, the 504 is now an important historical survivor of a unique system - and part of Manchester's evolutionary railway story into the East Lancashire suburban areas, once taken for granted by so many - and now remembered by so few. Whilst it may be that the unit will never run under its own power, at least its restoration and conservation provides a tangible link with the 'pre tram era', and will offer a unique enhancement to the visitor experience at the ELR - albeit loco hauled. 👍
Just a note the Jewish cemetery at back of NMGH has since been demolished to make way for a new housing project.
Thank you for the fascinating presentation it brought back so many memories, I grew up in St Marks Lane where we had an off license opposite the Church. So much has been demolished, I was particularly sad that Crumpsall Library is in ruins and that the Wesleyan Cemetery is now a Tesco car park. It is many years since I lived in Manchester and some of the buildings I passed regularly on the bus I had no idea about until I watched your presentation.
I vividly remember hearing this go off. I'd just returned from doing a beer run to France and knew nothing about the evacuation. I was sitting on Oldham Edge playing fields 7 miles away! It sounded like a huge tipper truck had just unloaded a ton of cobble stones but I knew it must have been a bomb of huge size and power. Remarkable.
Wonderful presentation Les! My dad grew up on Hawkeshead Rd, just off Queen's road in the 40s - 60s and went to Temple school. I'll download this and send it to him ( he's not on the internet ). I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it.
That's just shown me how truly the hill has been ruined.
enjoyed watching this, thank you.
It's brilliant to see history being preserved. Great video.
Hi Les what an informative video absolutely loved the trip down memory lane. Please can you remind me what use to be at 154-156 Cheethamhill road it's a corner plot which is now fenced off and an empty land it's on the corner of cheethamhill road and derby street. Thanks!
Hi Les, thanks very much for the trip down memory lane. I lived as a child in the lower end of Cheetham Hill. I lived in the 'flats' in Lancaster buildings in Knowsley St. There were three buildings, York (which was opposite Lancashire Hygienic Dairies) and Lancaster were back to back as your image shows but Cornwall was across the road from Lancaster at the back of Strangeways Prison and ran at right angles. I remember Holts Brewery with the horses and Mr Freeling had a shop further down in Empire St. I actually went to two primary schools, Cheetwood and St Chads. I also remember the Noel Timpson centre but was too young to go there. Tonsils out at the Jewish hospital, played football in Elizabeth Park, was a paperboy for the newsagent opposite St Chads and eventually went to St Peters Grammar in Prestwich after passing the 11+. I now live in Cambridgeshire. A couple of other memories, I played the trumpet and used to rehearse with the Cheetham Hill Prize Band in the room above the shop on the corner of Queen St where you bought your orange juice, I was at the ice rink in Derby St on the last day it was open, they let everyone in free. It then became a nightclub. One last thing, the little police station was in Knowsley St. I was walking on the opposite side of the road to it one Saturday and looking over at it and walked straight into a lamp post, got three stitches at the Jewish hospital! Once again thank you very much for putting all of this together.
