TGG14 Baron Collins Hill workshop
We all love the sound of a solo arrangement of a song or tune played on the tenor guitar, but how do you get all that sound to come out of one instrument? In this workshop, Baron will go over everything you need to know to build chord melody arrangements on your instrument without getting bogged down in music theory. The only requirement to take this workshop is knowing G, C, and D chords on your instrument. If you also have a G scale under your fingers, that's even better but not entirely necessary. Baron will also cover some more advanced chord melody techniques at the end of the workshop for those interested, but this can also be an opportunity to sit back and listen while gaining some...

There are lots of ways we can tenor guitarify melodies, and we'll look at some idiomatic techniques/strategies that work well on tenor. This could evolve into a bigger discussion/exploration of melodic development outside of fiddle tunes, depending on student interest. I'll be playing in fifths but all tunings are welcome. A huge thank you to all our wonderful performers, supporters and volunte...

My instrument when performing solo is my 5 string tenor guitar which is basically a tenor guitar tuned C G D A with an added low F string. This allows me to accompany myself and gives me access to the root tonic in the popular keys of G and A and Bb. So, I can go boom chick using the root as the bass note. With just 4 strings of the tenor guitar, this is not possible. However, in my workshop, I...

We will cover the various forms of music you are likely to encounter and identify the best type to use for chord melody play. We will review how to translate written music melody to the fretboard, and how the chords can be played to accompany the melody. The technique will work in all tunings and there will b...

Who makes that tenor?
Awesome talent and knowledge
Is your tenor tuned like a mandolin down an octave?
I love it I wanna join the band Eddie Spaghetti from the Rock and Roll Capital of the World Cleveland Ohio 🎸🪕💪👀💪
Great job teaching this chord melody development. Baron Collins-Hill has taught me so much about the mandolin and related theory. Thank you! 🙏👏🎸
Matt Weiner on bass! Excellent
Five string tenor guitar? Where did you find one? I have never heard of that before, and a Google search hasn't produced many results. Also, everyone got to see the guitar but us! LOL
Just cause rhythm player plays open campfire chords, doesn’t mean he can’t mute strum quieter. It’s probably better for Andy Griffith rhythm. E, E7, A7, Amin, E, C#7, F#7, B7, mostly open, sounds better than Andy Griffith. It’s probably more important for jazz to play in E flat?
Thanks for posting this Tyler. My focus is on tenor banjo but I definitely got some things from this video. I have to say, I was disappointed that you weren't teaching at Red Hot Strings this year. I was told they didn't have enough tenor banjo players for your classes. That is unfortunate. Maybe you can begin recruiting some players for next year so that you could return. If you do, you can count me in.
John Lawlor is a genius, simply the greatest unknown and least recognized jazz guitarist of all time.
Great video, Tyler is such an underrated musician
Thank you
Congratulations on the new job.
Thanks man. I miss pickin' with you and Dale
Looks like fun.
So, can somebody explain to me why it makes sense to have a tenor guitar tuned this way rather than muting the low E and A and just playing the top 4 strings of a standard tuning 6 string when you want these sounds, and still having those strings available for when you want them? I get that for an accomplished guitar player who wants something that sounds like a banjo, and who has a tenor banjo fall into their lap, this tuning would let most of their scales and skills map over seamlessly, but for me as a pretty mediocre guitarist who also has a couple of mandolins and an Irish bouzouki and a banjo which I also play pretty marginally at best, a big part of the allure for me of an instrument tuned in 4ths or sawmill tuning is how different things just naturally fall out when you’re noodling around, and some kinds of riffs and patterns just fall more easily under your hand with some of those tunings. Also, my attention drifted a bit in the middle, but am I correct in understanding that the presenter is basically just introducing the group to pentatonic scales?
Why does this say 7 months ago, 2012, it's 2024
Omg this is pathetic
A rare and beautiful player.
I’m new to Tenor guitar and the videos you guy’s have been posting on your channel have been so helpful to me! Thank you so much.
Which pick thickness does Tyler recommend for tenor guitar? Is this different for a flattop as opposed to the archtop he uses for this workshop?
Thanks for asking! I use a heavy pick for tenor guitar. I'm currently using the David Grisman 'Dawg" pick.
Funny how the internet works. I ended up here because I recently "converted" a 5 string banjo to a four string "Chicago" tuned banjo. I didn't know that there was such a thing as a tenor guitar, but I definitely want to get one. Doing what I did with my banjo has opened up a whole new avenue in music making for me, and I'd like to see what happens with a four string guitar. Any suggestions on where to find one?
Yes, I am also looking for one. They're hard to find. I've seen guys take a six string guitar and take off the outer two strings to get a Tenor Guitar. That seems to be a bit desperate. We'll find one yet!
I have a tenor guitar and a tenor banjo, both tuned DGBE Chicago style, so was glad to find this video. ❤
I’m a guitar player guy … 6 strings and all . I just got Soooo much good influence by this lesson . It’s all between the ears in in the soul … regardless of instrument choice . I’ll probably play 10 hours today (yes ,I’m single 😂). Love this information and mindset .
Glad you found it helpful :)
Thank you. I’m glad it was helpful for you.
Promo sm
The Colombian Tiple has the same tuning.
Thanks for this lesson of the Maestro. ♥
You are very welcome :)
very good!!!
Nice!.................................
Thank you :)
❤💫
Some great tips. And I hope there are some younger players too. Those audience guys all look like me.
Well, you really don’t need those other two strings after all, do you? Great performances.
Yeah! I have a tenor for blues and folk, but the Liszt and Reeser guy is great. And yes, the bass player nailed it.
We love to support all four strings. And yes he totally nailed it.
what brand is that resonator tenor ?
... What's the brand of the blond flat top tenor guitar opposite of Tyler please ?
The only blonde guitar in the video belongs to Tim May, who built it himself. A very talented guy.
If you save up someday you’ll be afford those extra two strings lol
What Tim May does with four strings most people couldn't do even with extra strings! 😎
I just getting into this tenor guitar thing, so Im all ears!! Thank you!!
Welcome :)
thank you for posting this.
Welcome :)
Thanks for posting this concert!
The guy with the 5-string guitar has balls of steel to dare to come and play at a Tenor guitar gathering
Its still a tenor guitar! Its tuned in fifths, CGDAE.
Beautiful song. So talented
John’s encouragement and virtuosity really helped me on my tenor guitar journey.
Glad to hear it! He's playing wows me every time.
That last song sure left me with a big smile!
The One Man Band Is Awesome!!!!

.... What is the brand of the las guitar played with an "M" on the head stock please ?

1:41 he has apparently put on a low 4th string for drone effect.
Nice to meet you guys..I just got my tenor guitar ... very excited..
