Tony Maria (dance)
Добавлен 9 янв 2023
Ballroom dancing is our favorite activity after retirement. We love to dance on cruise ships, mostly Cunard and Princess. We also dance frequently at many ballrooms and studios in Southern California.
We started our RUclips channel @tonymariadance December 2022 because we wanted to reminisce our good times dancing on cruises. We also wanted to share a collection of songs and dances that were selected by the cruise line musicians for good dancing.
For example, this particular slow waltz dance on the Cunard ship Queen Elizabeth best illustrates the elegence of classic ballroom dancing, where so many couples enjoyed their evening together, showcasing their line-of-dance expertise in a most relaxed manner, with the mellow voice of Tom Harris performing the classic dance song, StarDust. ruclips.net/video/NdHnbCR3S_0/видео.html
Please subscribe to our RUclips channel to enjoy our collection.
Comments are welcomed, but please, no judging and no teaching about how to dance "properly".

Majestic Princess cruise, Blue Jade Quartet, dancing to Tennesse Waltz
The Blue Jade Quartet has two female singers that sounded alike. The lead singer did this song, and the piano player did several other songs in this video series, including the Waltz Across Texas. They are our favorite band on this cruise. We appreciated their effort to find songs suitable for our ballroom dancing, including '"Have I told you lately that I love you", "Moon river", "Fascination", "Delilah", "Waltz across Texas", "Sway", "Can't help falling in love", "Scent of a woman", "Lady in red" and many more.

Majestic Princess cruise, dancing My Way

The viiolin and cello music for My Way was performed by the Strelitzia Strings. Maria and I always enjoyed the night club two steps because it interprets the connection and intimacy of a long marrage in a lively way - My Way became Our Way.

We appreciate the Blue Jade Quartet for being so accomodating for ballroom dancing in this 10 days cruise. They were playing one to three sessions each day, some sessions were scheduled for ballroom dancing.
Majestic Princess cruise, DD and the Groove band, dancing a Swing

The DD and the Groove band from Italy provided many live sessions and also played in the Captain's Party and the World Orchestra Performances. Three or four of the band members were also singers. They rock! Some ballroom music.
Majestic Princess cruise, line dancing an Electric Slide to Achy Breaky Heart
Просмотров 3434 часа назад
Some line dances have more than one version, such as the electric slide. One group did a country western version we once learned on a NCL Bliss cruise, but another group preferred the original popular version which has a more lively pace. Everyone was happy still.

Princess has apparently strongly enriched its support for dancing on it's cruises. On this Majestic 10-day cruise, we had four to five 45 minutes sessions of dancing ballroom and rock, each evening, to several live bands and DJs. Additional ballroom-specific live music sessions are in early afternoon. These have less dancers on the floor and having less people talking close to my camera. Dancin...
Queen Mary 2 TransAtlantic, prerecorded Puttin' on the Ritz, a Quickstep
Просмотров 37319 часов назад
This is our favorite piece of Quickstep music. The QM2 provided many opportunities for us to practice basic Quickstep duing this TransAtlantic cruise. We gradually simplified our Quickstep routine, down to the bare minimum, so we could keep pace with other couples on the floor. On the QE and the QV, we found the Queens Room Musicians, the Orchestra, and the Big Band always opened a dance sessio...
Queen Mary 2 TransAtlantic, prerecorded Moonlight Fantasy, a Foxtrot
Просмотров 43914 дней назад
The QM2 transatlantic had three hosts. Men and women who traveled solo could dance with them, but ladies also had an opportunity to dance with the dance teacher. In this case, one lady apparently booked the dance teacher to be her partner for the whole trip, money well spent in our opinion. You can see in this video that he had provided some entertaining steps.

We really like the Pasadena Elks and the peope there. Since the recent renovation of its beautiful grand ballroom, the Pasadena Elks has gradually been exploring the entertainment options for its members.
Cunard Queen Mary 2, TransAtlantic, Big Band Night, Quickstep

Dancing with an efficient line-of-dance comes natural on the QM2. Some dancers often do an East Coast Swing during a quickstep, but here they know to dance in the center of the floor. Lots of happy dancers.
Cunard Queen Mary 2, Room G32, Waltz, Nocturne
Просмотров 33128 дней назад
During the second last evening of the TransAtlantic curise, the Queens Room was used for a band that played pop music, Ballroom dancing was moved to G32, a room behind the Queens Room. No one was dancing there, so we and two hosts tried a waltz to see how it felt. We found what everyone apparently knew, G32 was not suitable for ballroom dancing. The size was not the problem, but the pillars, an...
Cunard Queen Mary 2, Roaring 20's Gala, waltz

Many people dressed up for the Roaring 20s Gala evening and we participated. I even wore a pocket watch by the London Watch Company. We were surprised when walking through the Britannia Restaurant that a diner stopped us unexpectedly so she could take a photo of our outfits. We hope other dancers who participated too will find fun in seeing themselves in the videos of this channel.
Cunard Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic, Black & White Ball, Swing, Frankie

The song was Frankie (Jive / 42 Bpm). The QM2 covers all kinds of ballroom dances. Whatever dance you like to do, the music for it will show up again and again.
Cunard Queen Mary 2 TransAtlantic, Black and White Ball. Pre-recorded Tango Diabolo
Просмотров 392Месяц назад
Queen Mary 2 has two pre-recorded sessions each evening, all with great dance music. This session was prior to the Gala on day 2. To this tango, Tango Diabolo, we tried to do an American tango. Because this dance used pre-recorded Tango Diabolo, I have replaced the low quality sound recorded on the QM2 with the original sound track of exactly the same Tango Diabolo.

Thanks for watching. Following your suggestion, I have revised the title.
I think it's lovely that you take every opportunity to dance.
Tony, I enjoy watching your many dance videos on the Cunard ships, but I think you have the wrong song title for this tune. It is 'Puttin on the Ritz' not 'When I get low I get high' both are great tunes for a quickstep, keep dancing and loading your videos.
Hi Steve, Thank you very much for the correction!! Much appreciated! I put together four vidoes and scheduled their release right before going to a cruise and neglected to be careful. Just back today. These two songs melodies are very similar and I slipped without hearing the lyric. :-)
Thank you for this lovely reminder of many happy moments in the Queens room. The dancers are elegant and graceful...
Beautiful foxtrot.
Music is alright, passable. This all seems to be instrumental music, though what I love most about ballroom music is the rich voices...lots of room to dance though!
Not sure who you mean, the fellow in the black shirt seems to know his stuff, I'm presuming he's the teacher.?
He’s the dance teacher. I was delighted to see the sequence at 1:45 to 1:53, seldom seen on the dance floor. 😊
The ballroom is beautiful. The people look like a fun group.
So nice to watch my favourite dance and I love the big band music. Thank you.
Good dancing around the pillar. On one of our cruises the dancing was held in a small room used for disco that had three pillars and bad lighting. Only went one night, as we were the only ones dancing. Not a lot of atmosphere and we felt really sorry for the dance instructors they again asked us what dances we would like. Really don’t understand why cruise lines cannot incorporate ballroom, Latin, sequence, line dance and pop. I think more people would attend those evenings. Great dancing again love your videos.
Great idea with the music. I didn't read about the swap until after watching the video. You got it matched up perfectly for timing, I didn't notice anything to suggest you had done that.
Thanks. I made sure the replacement was the exact sound track version used on the ship. Typically the original sound track starts about 10 seconds earlier than the recording on site. The blank calls for inserting a few slides about the ship or the musicians. That's a give away.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Been on Queen Anne wouldn’t go on it again … it photographs well ! Nothing Cunard about it
What a beautiful performance.
Very nice, Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for explaining how they’re doing it now. I had heard there were some changes from full orchestra and singer all evening.
Great for space, but a bit disappointing that so few were taking advantage of it. Perhaps explained by last night and folk too busy packing. Admittedly we missed most of the recorded sessions as we do photos and pre dinner drinks from 6pm, then leisurely dinner about 7pm. It's nearer 8.30pm before we get to The Queens Room and probably only manage a couple of dances before the live set starts. And thank you again for posting this, it's always a treat to watch any dancing from that venue.
Another great video, thank you. I think we'd be pleased if Wave Duo appeared on any of our QM2 bookings. I'm quite envious of that couple that I think are British trained. They managed to do several little variations that I'm sure we've learned in past and long forgotten! I suspect they probably attend a regular class. We have a 2 hour session with our last Scottish teacher later in the year, followed by her public class. But that will just cover brushing up on any faults, not likely to have time to revise variations. There's lots of criticism of QA's Queens Room on Cruise Critic, but it seems to be from non dancers who claim not to have the seating or sight lines to watch others dancing. I know you've expressed positive opinions about it and from your videos it looks absolutely fine for dancing.
Some lovely dancing there. I always enjoy watching.
It takes just as much courage to make a nice comment like yours. When Maria and I dance, we feel the world has only the two of us. She will not forgo the enjoyment of dancing to a good tune😊.
Watched a few videos of yours and all I can say is good on you for getting up first. My husband used to hate being first to the floor but it does encourage other dancers ( he doesn’t think twice about it now) You can clearly see you both love dancing xx
I know you're not that keen on style comment. As a British trained hobby dancer I do like to see dancers following a similar style to our own training. I'm glad to see that the gentleman of my favourite couple on the floor actually wore a tux that night. There was another gala when his partner was dressed to the nines and he was in a lounge suit. I would never do that to my wife! Sorry to make a dress code comment! 😀 That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with styles from other regions. What we've come across in France is completely different from the UK. I do envy what you find in California. On the Cote d'Azur outdoors on gravel tends to be the best we get. There were of course lots of great dancers on the floor including yourselves, but as a dancer you tend to focus on certain ones. Lastly I should add thanks again for a great video. You may have gathered that QM2 is our favourite and the only one we sail on. Vloggers don't appreciate that all we really want to see is dancing in the Queens Room.
Thanks for your articulate comments David. Of course the sharing of your opinion in such thoughtful ways enriches our shared experience in dancing on the Queens and is most welcomed. In contrast, cryptic short coments can be taken the wrong way. When you put efforts into sharing your enthusiasm, it is much appreciated. I have many more QM2 dances to share later as long as you promise not to become bored. Look forward to meet someday.
Hi Tony & Maria, Another enjoyable video to watch, thanks. Who were the folk sitting at the Cunard table in the corner on right of screen? Seems unusual to have a sort of official table there. Was that pre covid? Don't remember QE being in Baltic since the restart, and don't think St. Petersburg has been a stop since March 2022.
Hi David, the three people were the judges of the Dance Competition, the last one we saw on Cunard ships. Five volunteer couples each did three dances together. The price was a bottle of champagne and fun. This Baltic Cruise was July 2018, the good old days. The camera was an iPhone 7, bearly fast enough to capture the performance in the dim light.
@@tonymariadance Quality is ok. You've managed to post in 1080p. But cameras have improved so much in six years. We won a tango competition on P&O Arcadia in 2006. Judges were other passengers and the prize was a soap bag and a P&O folding umbrella! Comments were "not sure about their steps but loved the style." I think we'd had quite a bit of wine by then.😀
Bravo Tony and Maria. Please continue posting dances.
Thanks for watching and your encouragement. Many more dances are in the queue, just trying to deliver the best songs and music first.
This sounds like my high school stage band in 1962. Can’t Cunard do better?
Just been on QM2 and it seems that they have cut back drastically on using the Queens room for ballroom and using it more for 'party nights' No afternoon tea dance. No sequence dance sessions. If this is becoming the norm, we won't be cruising Cunard again,
Hi Geoff, thanks for your info. Which QM2 cruise was it? Please tell the number of nights versus the number of Motown plus party nights? two recent QE cruises of 5 to 10 days and a QM2 TransAtlantic each had one party night and one Motown evening. We accepted that as diversity. Queen Anne started having more party evenings and using the Queens Room as substitute for the theater. We and others lost no time to talk to the Entertainment Director on day 3 of the voyage, which may have led to more ballroom sessions as accomodation.
@@tonymariadance Hi Tony. This was 7 nights to Norway. I kept all the daily programs except one. Of the 6 I have, 3 are party nights, 2 are the gala nights which was ballroom dancing. 1 was a Movie night, which was I would say half and half. I I cant remember what the 7th night was.
@@Geoff.Turner Thanks for the details. I can see now Queen Anne offered more ballroom dancing than the QM2 by having 3 Tea Dances in our similar 7 nights Norway cruise. For example, its second day with party theme offered both an 1 hour Tea Dance and a 45' ballroom session by the Wave Duo band, before the two 45' sessions of party dances by the Overture band later that evening. The QM2 having more party nights than before may be a Cunard level decision. However, the QA example did offer the possibility of cruisers asking for 3 Tea Dances over 7 days and upgrading previous prerecorded sessions to live ballroom music sessions. IMO, dancers will need to make their voices heard early while on a cruise. To us, a decisive benefit of the QA over the QM2 was the penetrating digital sound system of the QA. Dancing to the prerecorded music of the QA is something worth experiencing. The quality of the music has influenced our decision of whether a given dance video will be posted to RUclips. Many QM2 videos did not cut it.
Whats with all the wavy, sticking out arms?
Hi, thanks for watching this channel. I have a favor to ask, please do not post comments here on how people dance. This channel only wishes to showcase how dancers enjoy dancing to their hearts, however way they prefer to express themselves in decent ways. No teaching, no judging. Thank you.
It was a genuine question. As someone who enjoys watching dancing I have not seen this before. I imagined it was perhaps a new genre? I will continue to watch dancing and perhaps connect with others who are more generous and willing to explain rather than criticise those of us who are not fully offe with the art of ballroom dancing. Best foot forward..@@tonymariadance
@@PennySelkirk-z8b Thank you for explaning adequately. Your comment stays up.
What a beautiful ballroom and such a nice way to raise money for charity.
The chap in the black/cream shirt & the lady in green/coral can dance! He leads, she follows - there is a blending of their bodies...you cannot just walk to a tune - walking isn't dancing no matter how many times you fling your arms around..
I always thought that the tango would be difficult to do but you made it look quite easy. I still don't think I could do it justice.
Thank you for your compliment. Honestly we are not that good at Tango by any standard. We just dance for fun. We mix American Tango with International Tango as needed, and bring in Argentine Tango steps when we are in a tight spot.
It is of course great to get any music to dance to, but slightly disappointing that there were two vocalists sitting doing nothing. If Shirley Bassey could sing along to that 60 years ago you would have thought one or both of them could have made an effort to sing along.
The three vocalist on the Queen Anne, Steven Tilley, Daisy of Wave Dual, or Rebecca all have enough vocal volume to do justice to the Gold Finger.
@@tonymariadance I wish they would then. I know some dancers that prefer just to have instrumentals, but I think it adds a bit more atmosphere to have vocals.
Many Thanks
Beautiful dancing to a beautiful song. Everyone looked so elegant.
Lovely excellent viewing Thank-you
Thank you for this beautiful video. I've had a bad week and this was very calming for me.
Our best wishes to you Joan! Be well!
Part of the issue with Queen Anne may be that Cunard have gone out of their way to market her as different from the others. They seem to think they need younger passengers. I don't quite get that, because the supply of old people is always being topped up so they're not likely to run short. You've experienced what seems like a policy to restrict the availability of dancing and that has been reflected in programmes for cruises before you sailed. Yet another thing I don't understand; I read comments from dancers that seem bothered if the floor isn't rectangular, perhaps that puts them off. We've danced on odd shaped floors over the years, and we see you dancing on other lines that don't have floors like Cunard.
Hi Ryan, glad we can chat online, haha. Have you booked another QM2?😊
Thank you for capturing such wonderful evenings. Tony and Maria, you are both a delight.❤
It was like a dream! We enjoyed dancing with lots of happy couples ❤and amazing guitar music!!
What lovely music. It must have been very nice dancing to it.
Hi Tony, Do you recall the title of a swing song that was used in Zumba classes on Queen Anne? Apparently they used the same music each day. Someone on Cruise Critic is asking.
Sorry. Do not remember, but if someone has a short video of the zumba class, that can identify the song.
@@tonymariadance Thanks.
Spoiling us with two so quickly! Sometimes folk ask if they as novices or non dancers will annoy others and get in their way. There was a couple there that prove that idea is nonsense. I suspect that one of them had mobility issues, but I noted that all the dancers managed to negotiate a path avoiding them even when they were going against the line of dance.
We observed that almost all dancers on the Queens Room floor were polite and made space for each other. Once, however, on a QE Baltic cruise, I observed that a male dancer, in his road rage, executed a medium power wrist-twist punch on the back of another unsuspecting male dancer. The latter was shocked but did not stop to voice his objection. The line-of-dance moved on and the offender got away with it.
QA's Queens Room fits the field of vision on your videos quite nicely. The other couple chose to get a cha cha out of that music, which reminded me of a recent post on a forum. The poster seemed to be complaining that when a piece of contemporary music was played in the Queens Room dancers still did ballroom or latin dances to it, as if that was wrong and you should only dance disco to pop tunes! They didn't seem to get the concept of a shared space for everyone. 😀
Hi Joan, yes, we enjoy dancing to good music! This piece has nice beats and easy to dance. Ballroom dance is always our favorite 💃🕺🏻
This was so different to your other dance videos. Did you enjoy it as much?
That must have been a wonderful cruise and everything looks so elegant. I really enjoyed watching.
