SCREE POT v. STEEL POT SCOURER I'm unable to conclude whether your (Golden Child) statements were made in jest or in a serious tone. Needless to say, I feel compelled to comment because you said "I'm educating you here". I believe that of the two terms, the former comes from Afrikaans while the latter is English. We have both English and Afrikaans loanwords in Setswana. So, both words are correct. If not as loanwords, then at least as words in their own right in their languages of origin. Even if "scree pot" was a made up word which developed on its own in Setswana, why should I, when speaking in the vernacular, and not in English, be forced to say steel pot scourer, unless such a term was the borrowed one? If you are of the conviction that English loanwords are superior to Afrikaans loanwords, then you must know that there are a great many words which you use today when speaking Setswana which have etymological origins in Afrikaans, such as toropo (dorp), kereke (kerk), hempe (hemp), gauta (goud), fenesetere (venster), to name but a few. In conclusion, the proposition that we should stop saying scree pot and must only say steel pot scourer, only holds sway with regards to the use of English, and not in respect of the use of Setswana, notwithstanding that you gainsaid Tina's reply to that effect.

My aim was not to imply superiority of English loanwords but to prioritize clarity in communication. If “scree pot” is widely understood in our community , it certainly has it’s place and is undoubtedly appropriate. Effective communication remains paramount, and your observations highlight the diverse linguistic influences within Setswana. I appreciate your contribution to this discussion.
