    Hi fellow brother! There aren't so many of us that recognize the beauty that exists in such dark music. I have moved away from most of it as I deepen my walk with the Lord, but Opeth and a few select others have remained. There is something ironic about creatures revolting against their creator by mastering the gifts that only He could have given them. We are blind until the Spirit opens our dark eyes. God is glorified through great art, in spite of the rebellion of the artists. The composition and execution are majestic. Thank you for your thoughtful analysis. I will listen to more of your content. I am hopeful for the ideal Christian Prog Metal artist/group that will "get it". The Gospel is the richest subject matter, full of Mercy and Wrath, Grace and Judgment, Redemption and Despair. If only someone could execute it, not sounding like Opeth necessarily, but at that level of coherent thematic integration, to put weight and grit where it belongs and majestic beauty elsewhere... I want to recommend to you my other favorite prog band: Karnivool The entire "Sound Away" album is a masterfully composed, executed and recorded album (there are a couple of less interesting tracks, but on the whole it's top). The theme is moving away from "religion". I'm pretty sure Christianity is what's in view, but it's not explicit. Even through it's wrong, at least it not vain hedonism, or murderous demonic stuff. It's worth interacting with the theme and absolutely worth listening to the music, amazing stuff. If you're up for the journey, I recommend the last two songs: Deadman & Change. They conclude the theme and play into each other. Deadman is from the perspective of a man on his deathbed. The epilogue is funeral bells, a dirge, took me way too long to figure it out. And it leads into the final track. Change has some theme of rebirth, indicating the death from before may have been a metaphor, not literal. But musically, brother, it's euphoric. Goliath is another track from that album, much more condensed musically, but still extraordinary. I feel like that's their most popular track. Sorry for the essay, but lastly, if you're ever interested in doing a podcast, or a conversation (recorded or not) about metal music, music in general or like topics, from a mature Christian perspective, we should connect.

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal 7 дней назад

      Hey brother! Thank you for your essay, I appreciate all of it. I really like your description of how we sometimes use our gifts to lash out against God, but He still uses it all for His glory and our good. Great insight. And I can't tell you how many times I've thought about having a super theologically solid Christian band version of Tesseract specifically. There are some GREAT Christian metalcore bands today (Convictions comes to mind), but it felt like the full orbed prog metal band that makes concept albums with movements and heavy instruments...doesn't exist in the way I was hoping they would. I could be totally wrong, and maybe they do exist out there, but I haven't quite found the perfect mix of rich theology and prodigious song writing. Another album that I would love to see a Christian iteration of would be Februus by Uneven Structure. I know I've heard Karnivool, but I can't remember any of their songs. I've added those 3 to the list. And I would absolutely do a podcast type thing! Email me at metalsharpensmetal7@proton.me and we can connect. Thanks for stopping by!

Spend some real time educating yourself before you listen to music you can never fully understand as a closed minded person ,see an open mind isn’t fooled into believing such utter nonsense,and any small amount of education on the subject shows all of religion as immoral and completely man made ! See a real god wouldn’t allow all the published lies in that bible … A real god wouldn’t even know what punishment is …everything is as he wanted ! A real god would NEVER need to have so many VERSIONS of his word . Recognizing that self-effort isn't enough to break out of the darkness and fear but that there is someone with more than enough power to wake me out of my dark sleep. First impressions of the new album is that they had bad Christian experiences growing up and want to vent about it now. I never really liked their genre of pissedcore so I hadn't planned to do a vid on them unless people asked.

    A couple years back, a buddy of mine played this song in his car and showed it to me for the first time; neither of us knew the other was a big fan of their Via album. Hearing this song for the first time was an experience I'll always remember, and I remember telling my buddy I thought the track was cool and that was about it. Later that day I looked up the track with the lyrics, and the song hit me in the gut hearing it a second time. Definitely the best song tribute to a fallen friend that I've ever heard, and the overall sound/songwriting in this track is peak Volumes imo.

      I get it, it's not an easy pill to swallow. If there's true repentance in anyone's life it's going to take time to build back trust, but as Christians, we're also called to put away all bitterness while still being shrewd about his claims and present actions. A hard line to walk, but that's Christ's standard.

      This comment is so late, but I feel your comment to/about ‘God’, is very disingenuous to Him, and also to Tom. It’s not about comparing the two. It’s always about your ‘PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP’ to either. I was raised Catholic, and I’m not a Catholic now, but I still respect people’s decisions to believe what they want ‘as long as they don’t enfringe’ on other people’s right to live their lives.

    Elijah Here. Huge ABR fan. I follow the band closely and know many of of their songs on guitar. Currently only two of the members claim Christ: Matt Griener and Jake Luhrs. All the other members have renounced it at this point sadly. Beyond that they have many writers and due to how they vote for songs etc has led to some gross songs such as identity, promoting what Gods word clearly does not. Brett is very anti-climate change (songs like the wake). Matt still seems solid in many ways. He wrote the song provisions which is theologically super solid.

    • @HeritageRestored
      @HeritageRestored Месяц назад

      Yes, major changes have occurred. Part of the fear of man thing is that they have just accepted that they are not "Christian" anymore. Which is not great.

Matt has always seemed genuine if not as outspoken as before, so ya, I'm willing to concede it's complicated. Just a bummer to watch that happen to your heros. You keeping an eye on Convictions btw?

Also, dangerous is another new one that is a banger, lyrics by matt. The song is about p0rh addiction actually. Defender is about how Matts dad defended him during his the divorce that it sounds like his wife initiated. Thats another whole issue. Sadly both jake and matt have been through divorce and even if they were totally righteous in the situation it is hard to go through that and come out unscathed.

    Hey! Just found your channel and really enjoy the format. As far your critique of ABR's lyrics over time - whether or not their lyrics are more vague and less gospel centered is an objective thing that can be measured, so I think that you can say pretty certainly that they have. However, I don't think it's fair to attribute that change to a fear of man. It could be the reason, or it could not be. I believe that the verses you refer to in the video could be perfectly applied here! Are the bands lyrics now heretical? Has the band denounced their faith? If no, then show grace. Don't attribute the change of lyrics to sin (fear of man over God). I believe the Bible is clear on brothers showing brothers grace in these areas and always giving benefit of the doubt.

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal 2 месяца назад

      Hey, welcome to the channel! Thanks for the thoughtful comment too. I'm not trying to kick them out of the kingdom by any means, but (if I were talking to them) would be prompting them to examine their own hearts about it. I agree I can't mindread and don't know for certain if they fear man. But those verses I mentioned don't preclude us from pointing out concerning issues in brothers. I had a thought experiment the other day to help describe some of my confusion. Take the motivational lyrics from a secular band of non Christians and compare them to some of the bands that call themselves Christian. Compare a whole album even. Would you have a good indication which band is which? If not, it points to a faith that might be trapped in the band's ribcage, rather than an outstretched candle like their artwork shows.

    • @kontainedkhaos7293
      @kontainedkhaos7293 2 месяца назад

      @@MetalSharpensMetal We agree that their music has become less gospel centered over time. I would just disagree that the reason for that change is because they are in someway more ashamed of the gospel than they used to be. It could be the reason, or it could not be! If your brother sins, absolutely - call him to repentance. I'm just throwing out a general warning of immediately attributing the reason of something to be sinful. Very difficult to explain this over text, I'm sure we are talking passed each other to some extent. lol

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal 2 месяца назад

      @@kontainedkhaos7293 I think I understand. You're saying it's kinda a 50/50 chance that's the reason. I don't even know that I called this a sinful potential move on their part in the video, but I can see how you'd make that connection. At the end of the day, I just want someone who's a Christian to be bold with their faith (more gospel centered!). I believe our theology and understanding of the gospel comes out through our fingertips and our lips, so it starts to paint a picture over time that things might not be on the right trajectory. I'd rather address those things earlier than see someone shipwreck their faith.

    Your video popped up in my feed. Was curious as I'm not a religious person. Opposite one could say. Ha. But I'm not here to bash anything. Point is, what I loved about ABR is they were openly Christian yet toured with alot of secular bands and weren't super preachy. And now there's a few members who aren't Christian at all anymore and I think openly atheist but the band is still together. It's nice to see a band not break up because of different religious views. Same happened to Underoath and I think Devil Wears Prada. Point is, nice to see a band who were strictly Christian turn into a band wirh different viewpoints and not break up because of it.

      Welcome to the channel! These guys have made some great music, and it's definitely significant that they've been a cohesive group for so long. I just have a much different view (as you probably gathered) in that if you are a Christian in a band, your views should be coming through in the lyrics, talking at shows, etc. I'll have a lot to say about that when I get around to my Underoath video lol, cause that seems like an even starker example. But thanks for clicking and discussing!
