Changing the grind on a spindle gouge - Woodturning
If you want a more versatile spindle gouge, you should definitely change the grind to a fingernail. Most spindle gouges are ground in a more flat manner at the factory. Albeit this is a working grind, it is not very pointy. And that is what makes the tool better. I show you how to make a fingernail grind on a new spindle gouge.
The sharpening system I use here is the Robert Sorby ProEdge. I love the simplicity and speed. The gouge is a brand new Record Power ProComfort. But this technique will work with other spindle gouges, and with bowl gouges provided they have a parabolic flute (I recommend the Robert Sorby 842XLH).
Have fun turning. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any ...

Drying wood for woodturning
Просмотров 41Год назад
In most cases, it is better to use dry wood for turning. Especially if you want to make something that keeps its shape, like a lidded box. Spinning tops also run better when they keep their round shape. In this video I show you how I approach the drying of the wood. Do you have a woodturning question that you'd like to see answered in a future video, please let me know in the comments below.

Pencils are very useful in the workshop for drawing lines and center points. But it can be quite tedious to sharpen by hand... :-)

That is what makes woodturning such an interesting way of woodworking. It is highly addictive! The wood species ...

Great little spinning top Peter, no wasted wood and a fun toy to play with. Working that close to the chuck at those speeds is hard, but you did it so effortlessly. Keep on turning. Cheers, Bluey 👍

I like the wood burning trick - I used only wires so far, looking forward to try it myself.. Also, it's nice to see your skills - I guess it would take me 5 times more time and the result would be far from yours..:-)

Hi Martin, nice to hear that you like to try the burning trick. No worries about speed. It comes gradually. My first eggcups, spinning tops and bowls took me ages. It is all part of the process and it is worth enjoying that as well. :-)
