    Do you read with the glottal stop instead of pronouncing 't' sounds? (For example, @20:35 you said "sen'ence" [instead of "sentence"] twice.) This appears to be a speech impediment introduced from "Valley Girl" speech that affects multiple-syllable words that end in /ən/ or /ənz/ (or /əns/), like "mountain[s]," "button[s]" and "sentence" and occasionally even shows up in accented syllables, with more prominent vowels, such as "wanted" (=> "wan'id").

    • @HasteWriting
      @HasteWriting Месяц назад

      I grew up in Ohio, so I've got a midwest accent. I try to read naturally when narrating, which for me means I do not always pronounce the 't' especially in dialogue. For prose, I try to be a little bit more careful about my enunciation, but I'm sure I'm dropping 't's throughout.

    Greg Bear's writing seems to lack balance & flow. Of his books, I've read Forge of God, which turned out to be more humanist/thriller than SF, & the somewhat more interesting Blood Music, which has a similar apocalyptic theme, & an indifferent lifeform that devastates the human race. As far as writing quality, Bear is no Dan Simmons, Robert Silverberg, or Kim Stanley Robinson. Those three are much more compelling.

    • @HasteWriting
      @HasteWriting 2 месяца назад

      I think you hit the nail on the head about balance and flow. Dan Simmons's Hyperion is certainly a far cry from Bear in terms of prose (though Simmons has other weaknesses. In my personal opinion the Hyperion series was wrapped up very poorly. First two books were great though.)

    Hi Neal! Dan from Sandia here. It was interesting to hear your take on the Radch Trilogy. You made some good points, and your presentation was great. When I read it, I was really wondering what was going on for the first ten or fifteen pages, but then I caught on to the the slow drumbeat of Ancillary Justice. From that point forward, I absolutely loved the whole trilogy. It gives me hope for SF that doesn't rely on endless space battles and thriller-style pacing. LOL.

    I read and loved this book when it first came out in the 80s. It’s an all-time favorite of mine, though others might respond differently. For years, I eagerly awaited sequels. Those sequels were slow to show up. The author wrote God Stalk while in graduate school and only returned fully to writing after having an academic career and then retiring. The remainder of the series is a bit different (being mostly outside the stunning setting of Tai-tastigon). The series is somewhat rambling, but densely imaginative, with an endearing protagonist. I eagerly await every new chance to revisit the world.

    OK then. Your usual enjoyable narrative with dog. Always a plus. I never read Axiom’s End, so a summary would have been helpful. But I get the general idea. First contact stories are always wishful thinking, because if there are aliens out there with spaceships that want to visit Earth, almost any scenario is believable because we know nothing about them. As you suggest they tend to be not so much about aliens, incomprehensible or otherwise, but about how we react to them. Are they just here to spread divine love? Blow us up? Hit us with a board with a nail in it? Aliens are like monsters; they’re mirrors we hold up to ourselves in a dark room. I was intrigued by April May, the disasterpiece, because I’m dealing with writing about a difficult character. I’m working on the scene where my main character Bonnie is transformed into a paranormal, and I realize it’s hard to write about a very traumatized character without making them seem pathetic. It’s been two years since she was nearly beaten to death in a horrifying place, and she’s still a mess physically, mentally, and emotionally. How do you write a character with that kind of past that audiences will like? How does a character overcome trauma, setbacks, or just being an asshole?

    • @HasteWriting
      @HasteWriting 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks and good point. I should have at least linked to my Axiom’s End video. Consider reading An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. There are always ways to make a traumatized character relatable in ways large and small. The character can be strong - coping mechanisms work, at least to some degree, but we can also see the character’s weakness in other areas. ruclips.net/video/FOt5yg8TS1g/видео.htmlsi=N6d0p0sBrGvMTwcq
