Magic
When I heard that A-flat in performance, it struck straight to my heart. Aimard's explanation as to how it was the "eighth" note (added after the sequence of seven), and its placement at the center of the piece (and that it is used just ONCE... brilliant) so helped me understand Ligeti's genius here. It also shows why an intellectual/analytical approach to music (and art, and ...) ENHANCES our subjective and emotional responses... not diminishes it. Merci beaucoup!
I suspect Ligeti was deeply influenced by "Shepard's tones," which were discovered/invented around the time this piece was written: ruclips.net/video/nQoU_2ElF14/видео.html
I have a long semi-professional second career as an orchestral musician, and have long loved Ligeti's orchestral music, in particular Atmospheres and Lux Aeterna (used in "2001: A Space Odyssey"). A few weeks ago I went to a retrospective/celebration of Ligeti's music at Stanford University (where Ligeti visited in 1972) and heard the Musica ricercata for the first time. The no. 7 was so sublime, so extraordinary, it literally brought me to tears. How had I never heard this piece!! In my many decades of studying music (including basic composition), listening very seriously to music and performing and recording music, I had never heard a piece quite like this. The right hand reminds one of several of Erik Satie's Gymnopedie, and the use of ostinato is mildly reminiscent of Keith Jarrett's Kyoto Concert encore (1984), but Ligeti's juxtaposition of the seven-note ostinato was brilliant... it introduces "space," as so well explained by Aimard here. And the beauty, elegance, sense of longing, of the plaintive right hand melody becomes all the more sublime through this juxtaposition. Immediately upon coming home I listened to no. 7 (on RUclips) dozens of times, studying the score. The next day I tried playing the piece on my piano. Like all great music, one hears MORE each time you hear it.
Merci, et bravo pour ces commentaires ! Je ne savais pas qu’une analyse pouvait être musicale !
I wouldn’t put “percussive” in the same group as “brutal” or “ugly”
As I went to view this video RUclips tried to show me a video ad by an idiot who thinks that you can learn 100 songs if you know three chords. Never has an advertiser looked more truly and utterly pathetic What a fascinating insight into Ligeti's manic score!
I'm not surprised Messiaen emphasized listening and notation. After all, he took musical dictation from the birds!
Enfin, voyons!
yes pierre that 3d space thing you came up with, is only like your opinion man, shut you ass up and just play the piano instead
With today's ear training apps, there is no excuse to not have a killer pitch recognition.
I love, love, love this element in Bartok's music. But one should be a little restrained with something this precious. It's not Richard Strauss , and it's not "program music". Bartok was very clearly rejecting that sort of literal reading of musical meaning. I enjoy Andras Schiff very much; but I'd warn anyone not to keep these forest images as the boundary of what it's possible to feel from this music.
Awesome…..The perfect combo is Ligeti and Pierre-Laurent together! Hope see you again somewhere!
Great vidéo...thanks. ❤
Immenso Schiff
Super!
What a Master Class. Maestro Schiff give us much more in 6 minutes that some other in several hours. Thank you!!
It's worth saying that, when it comes to musical dictation, those with perfect pitch have a significant advantage over those who don't, to the point that it becomes unfair. This is particularly true if the musical excerpt you're using is atonal or highly chromatic. If you're going to grade people on it, it would make sense to separate those with and without perfect pitch and grade them differently. It's as if, in math class, you had a portion of students who instantly knew the answers to problems without having to think or work out the solution.
I know persons who can write down everything they hear. they are totally un-musical. 😂
Amazing!
Video così ti riconciliano con la vita, grazie!

Boulez y Messian Grandes comp.
XD bassat
Brilliant. Brilliant man.
I used to sit with an acoustic guitar in front of the TV late at night while studying classical composition at university. I'd try and play along with the hideous infomercials that interrupted our film viewing as the same ads would appear frequently. This ended up being a surprisingly efficient educational tool as I always got 100% in every ear training dictation test.
Sehr SCHON
Just watch Aimard playing this piece last night in Beijing - it was the last piece of the program. I've seen this video two years ago, but hearing this piece in a concert still gave me much surprise.
What's disturbing is that there is very few anything of this quality produced for children today.
Is it possible to have a complete recording of the masterclass? I would pay for that!
magnifique. Quel cadeau!
finding these little youtubes of boulez talking in super-depth are a treasure trove to me -- thank you for putting them up
What a bunch of subjective and narcissistic expectation making players suffer and their skin crawl. Yet this player is a musician I respect with all my spirit, soul and body. Such wonderful interpretive and technical skills
How is "tempo is personal" a subjective and narcissistic expectation ?
A wonderful musician
Completely beg to differ; His hands have always been foreboding and stiff which is akin to most of his musical/esoteric/high-minded and devoid of passionate emotion way of being. The voice has a dead cadence with awkward pauses that -to me- makes him the Hangman or funeral director in a vampire movie.
Stereotype of a Hungarian
ARgh - I should proofread - "(or even 'Atmospheres') when they watch '2001 OR 'Lontano'..."
People hear the 'Requiem' (or even 'Atmosphere's) when they watch '2001' of 'Lontano' in 'The Shining' and many immediately decide they should steer clear of Ligeti (which is a pity, because along with Penderecki's 'Threnody for...', the Requiem is one of the most harrowing pieces of music yet composed...and what is music to be if not to thrust to the extremities of all experience? It's also a bit hypocritical because for most lay people - me included - those films were their first exposure to this genius), but his 'juvenile' piece, 'Musica ricercata' is a testament to the simple beauty he could achieve with the polyrhythm of No. 7, some of the settings of Hungarian songs and the icy micro-polyphony of 'Lux aeterna' Why he isn't regarded with more conviction as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century I'll never know.
But he is
Superbe

What a pleasure to have found Explore the score. As a film maker and musician I tried more than 25 years ago to produce such type of videos. It was impossible. I would not find any support even from Arte. I love it.
Indeed I’ve always felt this piece had a 3D feeling when listening to it, stunning. A genius composer
Plus: it’s funny how such an advanced piece is actually still making use of Bach’s counterpoint
ruclips.net/video/obCaI57OXbY/видео.html
Thank you.
Schiff is such an inspiration. He looks always in another world deeply connected with music!
great pianist and performer🙏🏽
This is one outlook, here's another : " I compose at the piano, and I do not regret it" Igor Stravinsky. And it doesn't have to be one or the other either.
This etude is so beautiful. I wish I had the technique necessary to play these beautiful pieces.
Same
Its so fucking hilarious
Wow, what a treat to hear such a clear analysis of this Ligeti etude. Thank you very much.
Ah, the "Good" Schiff. Not the Evil one. Bravo.
