Anchor Locker Needs Drains
Today we are tabbing in the v-berth liner and drilling symmetrical holes in the bow for the anchor locker drains. This was a big decision as it was not part of the original design but an important modification that will save me a lot of mess and stink in the future.

Re-coring the Bow: Solid Fiberglass (Full Process)
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
This feature length movie depicts the entire process of a DIY method to re-core the bow. The balsa underneath has rotted away in some places and I cannot consciously allow that to continue especially where the boat's largest chainplate is attached (the bowsprit). I understand this is a long one, but I wanted all of this to fit into one video. This video was edited down from 9-hours of footage a...

The Big Reveal! Glassed in Chainplate Removal
SHANNON is a QUALITY boat worth your effort to investigate
Yes! Shannon boats are great, good statistics, beautiful and reliable :)
Wont tabbing the liner to the hull create moisture trap points?
I hope not! I am trying to be thorough and not leaving any gaps.
🦭🦭🦭
🐋🐋🐋
Biggest issue with steel and aluminium is the galvanic corrosion the use of chemical sealants to block a bridge plus the salt water just speeds up corrosion
Yes, definitely does not belong on the wettest part of the boat.
My friend just replace it by sold wood end of story 😊
Agreed! ⛵️
You need to get that crevice corrosion ground out & welded up. That is right at the most dangerous part of your rudder system, if your shaft cracks there your done .
You are absolutely right, I will look into the corrosion thoroughly, it seems like a lot of sailing channels always end up with a busted rudder, I’ll have be careful with this.
Welding new aluminium end onto that shouldn't be that hard
I’ve got a solution in mind now ✅
HDPE or thin chopping boards will do the trick. You must completely isolate the stainless plates & bolts from aluminium. Tefgel is not enough you need to use nylon washers & proper spacerplates.
Agreed, also, I’ll have to keep that chopping board trick in mind!
The neodymium magnets with holes in the centre & steel surrounds are much better for what you intend
Ya I was flying blind with that design, hard to find examples of vertical storage access ports.
Seatrials let you know everything that does not work, not make sure everything is working!!!!! Even with well cared for boats there is always a pretty long list.
Oh, you should see the most recent episodes, it’s quite a long list 😅
@@projectseawolf I’ll for sure check them out
I’d bet a chunk of hardwood would be Pennie’s on the dollar to ss or alum. And not too hard to come by. And use the alum backing plate as a template for a new ss one - then no corrosion worries and hardwood is incredibly rot resistant so long as water doesn’t get trapped against it. It’ll look pretty too 😉keep up the good work 💪
Agreed! I think I will do this, thank you!
Before breaking the end off of the end of the bowsprit, you should have taken a tracing of the shape and full measurements. Wait until you see the price of stainless ($$$), seriously consider replacing it with good quality hardwood. Plenty of bowsprits are made of hardwood with a stainless framework. Add some whisker stays to reinforce the bob-stay and you will be fine.
Yes, completely agree, at this time I am designing a hardwood bowsprit with stainless elements/reinforcement, stoked to get working on it! I was able to piece the aluminum mostly together so I have the measurements. ✅ can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Use a strip of starboard to insulate between the two
That would work!

Awesome video - this is an excellent primer on properly analyzing a blue water cruiser.
Thank you!
You read my mind about glassing the divinycell first. You could have glassed a sheet, cut the strips, and then glued in place with thickened epoxy. A quick wipe of the excess after clamping and the job would have been done with no further cutting and sanding to get the hatches to fit cleanly. I hope that it works out for you the way that you planned -- I only point these things out because you seem keen on getting the boat back into the water and pre-glassing the core will definitely speed up the process as it is always easier to work with epoxy on a flat surface -- less waste of epoxy and a cleaner end product. I'm rooting for you!
Oh! Glassing a whole sheet then cutting to size does seem like a good plan, I like that idea a lot. If I had pre glassed the strips it would have made for a much cleaner insert for the cabinet door too. Unfortunately I will likely finish everything on the boat and still have to wait some time to save up enough for the battery bank, so even though I’m itching to go I’ll likely have to wait a bit. Leading up to that though I can make sure everything is 100% ready.
@@projectseawolf Exactly. If you were to pre-glass both sides of a sheet of divinycell on a nice flat surface (one side at a time) you will end up with a sheet of hard fiberglass board. Then you can mark out for the shapes that you need and use the multitool to carefully cut out the shapes. Then you can simply glue into place with thickened epoxy, and if extra strength is needed add a couple layers of fiberglass tape at the seams. This method will allow you to make partitions for the storage areas, boxes to mount as cubbies, or even shelving for closets. You could have done the repair on the bow without the mess of all that layering -- 2 - 3 layers over core material, and ten cut to shape and place in the hole.
Might be time to get a small router for corners before glassing 😎
Oh!!! I have a router on board and I forgot I could just use that! 😅
Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Always love seeing you in the comments, cannot wait to get this boat back in the water.
You need to sand down the seems and glass tape a couple layers over them on the outside then fair and sand and paint.
Agreed! Ok I will give that a shot, it's going to look so good
🦭
🐋
Just remember the bigger boats require much higher expenditure to maintain.
I found a happy medium between big and manageable ⛵️glad she isn’t any bigger because ya, it’s been quite the process getting her re-fit 😅
I don't understand why you didn't use Coosa board there.
Do it! Probably better than what I did.
Every bit of progress counts, keep on it till she’s ready sail 😎
Everyday a little closer ⛵️
Great job, well done.
Thank you so much! ⛵️
I think re-coring it with balsa and epoxy then a few layers of bi-axe would have been a bit easier and saved on material cost. Either way it came out pretty good and I'm sure you learned something the next time you have to fiberglass. Keep the dream alive brother!
this was a video of what not to do to core on a sailboat deck!! omg
Thank you! One step at a time, we’ll see how she holds up with this type of repair in the coming years. Just didn’t want the bow to ever rot again given how wet it is up there.
Looks good smooth it out and get primer on it epoxy doesn’t do well in direct sun un covered … UV damage is a real thing.
Yes it sure is! I will be sanding it down, smoothing it out, and covering it up as soon as the weather improves. ⛵️
You should have replaced the rotten balsa core with a new one glued with thickened epoxy and then laminate biaxial on top of it. Way easier and cheaper epoxy wise
I thought about it but I’d really like the bow not to rot ever again, it’s a wet spot on the boat.
@@projectseawolfThen use coosa board or divinycell .😊
Good video, I enjoyed the long form content too!
Thank you! Yes, there will be more long form content to come.
Hello, 😊 To make a positif outlook from what I know, it is without doubt a mess ! Epoxy … it is messy but it is not a excuses for it ! There is many air bubbles even the size is a silver count. From how important the area is, my advises for you is to let a professional look over your video and he will let you know what it is. Look at this in a positif way! Looking forward to see more from your videos.
They would charge $15k to do it here and I have less than $1k to my name so no.
Lot of work, looking good!😊
@@donaldbrown9437 thank you so much! ⛵️

I know you’ve already cut the top fiberglass but if it would’ve been me since the core did not go all the way to the hull I would have considered removing the core from inside the boat.
That definitely would have been the better option for many reasons! I wanted to use gravity to settle things out and lay down the heavy sheets of glass without pressing from beneath 😅 seemed easier in my head
doing from the top is fine BUT the point of reusing the top skin is to take it off in one piece not a puzzle set of ten odd shaped pieces, no bevel on core, recore with balsa or foam type core material, a sheet of 1708 and then the skin back on top
🦭
🐋
Skimmed thru, too long of a video for me but... huge undertaking.... She'll be a beaut when you resurrect her
Ya it’s a long one 😅 I cannot wait to launch her and explore the water again.

Yes I am I say it correctly now lol
