How THIS Horror Game Changed the Genre
This video is meant to argue that Outlast had a major impact on horror games. I hope this video can stimulate a discussion on that. If you disagree, please comment. I'd love to talk about it.

I really enjoyed my time with this game. Aesthetically and conceptually, I found it pretty scary! The solid gameplay helps a lot too. I'm hoping that we get an Alan Wake 3 that improves on the areas of this game. My thoughts on A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead. I didn't see this game get too much attention upon release. I wanted to bring as much attention to this game as I possibly could. All gameplay is mine this time! :D Music: Save Room Theme - Amnesia: The Bunker Serenity - Resident Evil 4 Save Room Theme - Resident Evil 7 Save Room Theme - Resident Evil 4 Save Room Theme - Lost in Vivo
Interesting you mention the comparison between Mr. X and Chris Walker- seems like the original Resident Evil 2 might have influenced Outlast, although Mr X was pretty weak in the version, and then Outlast went on to influence some changes in the RE2 remake. The main issue with the 1998 Mr X was how his sections were pretty scripted and he could never actually follow you through rooms, he'd just show up occasionally in random places (a product of the time I guess). Outlast fixed some of the scripting issues with stalking enemies in Walker, but then applied these same frustrating issues to the chase scenes lol. It's also nice you mention the whole battery resource management concept, which I think other future games basically perfected (like Amnesia: The Bunker- such a good example and leaves so many options for gameplay). Great video, super interesting stuff!
omg thanks so much for the comment! that has to be my only regret with this video. I wish I talked about how those old school stalkers hunted a little more. I agree, I think the Bunker has recently perfected the whole idea and I'm so excited to see how other games build off of what it did!
For me it's not about being without weapons or not. It's about removing the power fantasy, in Silent Hill or Manhunt you feel scared even tho you can defend yourself, because you can't kill enemies upon enemies easily. Outlast takes a step further and removes the power from the player. I don't agree with most of the comments where they say that horror with guns are scary, they can be a lot scary even more than "chase-only" horror games
yeah i completely agree. i think horror with guns has been even scarier on average for me. There so many more options available to the player and that makes things so much scarier
Wow, keep the great work up man!
thank you so much!! i absolutely will!
While not the first horror game based on defenselessness, most notable game like this being Amnesia before Outlast came out, Outlast took what Amnesia did well in the panic you felt while being chased, turned it to 11 and based the entire experience around it. The first time you play the game, you can't help feeling the dread of being caught by the enemies, because you know for sure that you'll have to haul ass and when you don't know the levels, you will inevitably wind up in a dead end. That uncertainty of where to go, mixed with the panic during a chase, made for an extremely good horror game that played on anxiety, unlike Amnesia that played on atmosphere and playing with the player's anticipation. The open, labyrinthine level design of Outlast 2, mixed with the added stamina system and the group chases, made this even worse (or rather, better).
i totally agree with the first outlast take! it's funny, i never really found outlast 2 to be labyrinthine. I honestly found the open design exploitable
like how do people even forget about this game? debatably the GREATEST horror game ever made. nearly perfect in every way
yeah it's odd that people don't talk about it more! maybe we just need to get more outlast games for it to get the notoriety it deserves
i think one thing not mentioned here is walkers intro, first subtly seeing him then the soldier jumpscare shortly followed by walker grabbing you and calling you a little pig, that moment truly establishes him as a character and it's one of the reasons he is so scary. I think outlast most definitely helped push the genre forward but i do think red barrel can learn from outlast 1s success as the 2nd was no where near as scary and trials feels more fun than scary but i do love the first and trials. I do think that Alien isolation and RE7 are the current primary pushers even if they took some influence from outlast. but realistically i think the current primary leads in the horror genre are indie games triple A devs are still pretty linear and resident evil games get a lot less scary since we have weapons, there is a new alien isolation coming out which hopefully will be a huge success and push more developers to step up or step back into the horror genre. Great video, brought back some older memories from playing Outlast 1
i couldn't agree more! the intro for Walker was certainly unforgettable and it did a lot to establish him as the player's nemesis. I also hope that the next outlast game takes more from the first game as opposed to the second
Awesome video
thank you so much!! :D
Amazing video essay, I love this!! Definitely makes me appreciate how peak outlast is, even if i enjoyed the heck out of it when i recorded it with my friend months ago. You deserve so much more subscribers.
you're the best!! i can't thank you enough for saying that!!
Ayo great content
thank you so much!!
Here before 100 didn’t finish the video yet but if you didnt touch on the soundtrack you gotta
lmfao i have some bad news for you...
Outlast is so damn good. One of only a few games that scared me a lot even while watching a Let’s Play rather than playing it myself 😅
it really is THAT scary! it can be like watching a scary movie
What mic do you use? Ive been working on my own video essays and I really like your audio.
i use a tonor tc30. used ones are very cheap. i got a used one for 5 doubloons
@driftdown thanks man
W VID !
thank you so much!!
The first one dlc,2 was Legendary 3 was a failure.
you might HATE my next video then
@driftdown Why?
In my opinion Outlast trials is better than 2 because the lore for outlast trials is really deep and interesting and the game feels more claustrophobic than the second game for me plus I personally like the setting a lot more.
@@Smokey7707-i2h you might see for yourself soon
oh man i just clicked the video thinking you was one them ytubers having like 5000 subscribers then i noticed you have only 81, but the quality is the same or even better, keep it up!
i can't thank you enough! i'm working to get there!
I think Outlast 2 is one of the best games ever created! It is my favourite even if I played a lot of games. It is so good that I am trying Saint & Messiah now.
that's awesome! i just finished outlast 2 recently
I like how it sounded like you air quoted “whistle blower” haha 2:00
lol yeah i was trying to be silly about it
I agree i love Resident evil, but outlast it is something else.
yeah they're like two different takes on the genre. i'm happy to say that I love both and that they're very important to the genre
This game was good, but the DLC felt like a whole new experience on its own. The main villain was absolutely horrifying, the music was just as good, overall it didn’t even feel like a DLC lol
yeah the DLC was pretty special! the story was definitely the best part
It took me too long to realize you used the amnesia the bunker safe room music in the background. I know that has nothing to do with the video I just found it funny for some reason
lol honestly that's one of my favorite horror game themes! It felt soooo fitting for this game too
awesome video but i would have to say that chris probably was inspired my nemesis from resident evil 3 (the original, not the remake, they did him dirty in the remake, in the original he kinda acted like chris)
oh i certainly agree. I'd still argue that the way that chris was done was very different (and scarier) than nemesis. it also seems that stalker enemies since chris have had a lot in common with him
This game is the ONLY good horror game I've ever played. Outlast 2 was garbage though because of how buggy it was when I played it
have you tried others like re2 or amnesia the bunker? if not, i couldn't recommend them enough. have you played outlast 2 since? if so, what were your thoughts? i just finished playing outlast 2 a few days ago
Have you played Outlast Trials?
I think for the chase sequence parts I understand the complain on why it is "bad" because you have to memorize the route but play it in the Insane difficulty and you will sort of start to feel scared since you know that if you die it's all over and you have to redo everything while this can be viewed as annoying to me it really puts in some fear in the player since your anxious on whether you will make it out alive or not. In general I think the missing thing that you did not mention that I think makes outlast unique was the difficulty since playing from Normal and Insane is vastly different and gives a unique experience. In normal you are tankier, you have autosave and you have more resources so you pretty much can make almost all the mistakes that you want, but in Insane it is a completely different ball game since you can die in one hit from Chris Walker, Dying actually brings you back all the back to the start of the game and you only have 2 batteries instead of the standard 10 in normal which makes it a unique experience since even at your "second" playthrough you still feel terrified in fear of dying compared to normal you feel terrified only because its your "first" time seeing the horrors of the Asylum
that's so cool actually! i played on hard mode, not insane but maybe i'll have to go back and give that mode a shot. in that case i totally agree with you, that mode makes the chases horrifying
This game revived my horror games loving soul, I am replaying it tonight. Amazing commentary
thank you so much!! this game made me fall in love with horror games without combat. just like you i'll be replaying this one for years to come!
the sound of walkers trombones and rattlinf chains is forever carved into my 2013 brain.
yeah i'm not forgetting that any time soon either
Outlast is awesome
indeed it is!
Just downloaded trials and In the waiting room theres Chess or Arm Wrestling Brains or Brauns
you gotta let me know how it is! i'm hopefully gonna play it soon
@driftdown well, ig it depends on you. I wasn't even much interested in it till I downloaded it. It is pretty hard at least to get used to the play style compared to the first game. You get to stun enemies and kick down doors create distractions which I wasn't a big fan of (because when I think of outlast I think of no weapons only running and hiding) buuuut lore wise it lines up along the lines with what the Cia was doing behind the iron curtain irl. Wasn't a fan of the night vision goggles but (possible spoilers > you get them basically drilled into your head) and I appreciate the strange use of technology that they use around that era. Definitely like a chess game you gotta think and theres people chasing you lol. Bigger maps than the first game. Much better actually playing it. ( I was watching people who know what they're doing actually play and lemme tell you it's not easy at least at first). Enjoy. The lore of the games is so strange (For fun " Elf " means nightmare related to Alp as well) this could tie into Krampus and Santa/Satan But nanomachines? And biowarfare on people who don't even know it unless they're reading the files they pick up. Sorry for the ramble thank you for asking I hope you can enjoy maybe I'll see you in the Trials. Lol
@@Divusdeus-d6b that actually sounds so cool. honestly i am absolutely not opposed to using limited tools to fight back. I feel like that can add another layer of depth to everything. you got me a lot more excited for it now that you describe it as feeling like a chess game. i'll see you in the Trials!
Glad it was immediately famous. Playing it again today much better lore than i even knew
me too, it did a lot for the genre!
Thank you for making this video despite many others existing, shows you care about it and that will help you a lot here. I believe that despite the countless gameplays and essays, outlast is still somewhat under-discussed, mostly due to the time it came out on.
i agree. it's like the middle child of the horror video game genre. it was so essential yet it wound up being underdiscussed. i suppose the lukewarm reception to the sequel didnt help things at all
Outlast is scary not only because of its enemy’s and the inability to protect yourself against deranged monsters, but because of its very claustrophobic & insidious atmosphere. I did enjoy the video although You did somewhat lose me at the end of it though, adding any sort of “open-area” would completely ruin not only the main atmosphere of the game(what makes it special) but also the core characteristics of outlast, a perfect example of this is the outlast trials, a trashy multiplayer spin on a known single player horror franchise, it completely ruins what made outlast 1 and some of 2 fantastic in my opinion. The ability to fight back completely negates any kind of fear I would have had if I wasn’t able to harm the enemy, not to mention the general downgrade in graphics & art style, it’s very plasticky which is a big turnoff for me in a “serious horror game” but that’s besides the point. Another thing to mention is I love the chases, they’re not hard & I find it hard to understand how you can get turned around if you said it yourself that their design is “very linear”, it reminds me of a horror movie which is exactly what outlast feels like, a found footage horror game. I hope red barrels can make a comeback and deliver something good with outlast 3 and not churn out something classic & original instead of a pathetic Frankenstein amalgamation of mechanics & changes that where never needed in the first place. Good Day Sir!
i really appreciate it! you make a great point, i should've been more specific when i said "open area". a big, wide, sandbox type of area is absolutely NOT what this game needs. I should've said that I wanted a more interconnected structure, unlocking more areas of the asylum more organically over time while being able to return anywhere at my leisure. i loved exploring mount massive that much and i crave more of it. as far as the chase sequences go, i'd argue that, in a panic, it's easy to get turned around or confused. while panicking in a horror game is good, the second time through, all of that tends to disappear. i thank you very much for the feedback and support my man!
Amazing video!! I haven't seen a video that's entertained me this much in a while. I hung on to your every word
thank you so very much!! this video taught me a lot about how to improve my content. your support is so dearly appreciated!
i hate most horror games giving me guns. it ruins all the fear when im able to protect myself and the weapon isnt limited enough. outlast being a run and hide only scenario brings the fear factors past 100-- like, if youre gonna give me a gun then youre monsters need to be scary and strong enough that not even being strapped up will make me feel safe like amnesias bunker did it best, you have a gun but it is useless against the monster and the gun essentially functions as a lock picking tool. THAT is how guns should function in horror. like if youre gonna give your players a weapon then it has to fit the setting and enemy so it wont disrupt the fear factor- like outlast would be so easy and so boring if you had a gun or any weapon since most of you enemies are mortal humans, unless the mechanics stopped you right? so ultimately being in the outlast scenario is only scariest when you are weaponless, or it depends on the weapon. like, a crowbar couldnt take chris walker but a bullet to the head could. like when i played the evil within and i just cleared levels and the fear was gone, and it made me stop playing. like you have to actively choose to not kill all the monsters' so you can continue to be afraid, and also to save bullets, but still- the gun ruins it this is all to say i love outlast
i see what you mean. i definitely agree that gunplay has to be done in a very particular way to work. the evil within felt too actiony at times. i remember there being arenas full of enemies to beat in that game. games like amnesia the bunker and resident evil 2 do it perfectly. as you said, when the gun feels more like a tool, it makes it soooo much scarier. Guns in horror games always bring a good level of inventory management with them too. If the next outlast game goes down this route, i hope smaller enemies are very difficult to kill (or may just temporarily run away when hit), and that stalker enemies like chris walker are immortal
@ exactlyyyyyyy- like outlast trials has some things one could argue is a weapon but they’re more distractions or stun weapons against all the enemies- *in thanos voice* “balanced, as all things should be”
@@JosefinaQB im so hype to try outlast trials muhehe

Outlast defined the genre not only with this unique gameplay style, imo it did so much more with this indescribable vibe that only the outlast games have. I have never played an equally unique brand of fucked up horror game than any outlast title. the way red barrels implementes nudity religion and a mix of psychological and body horror has never been done like this. the nudity which is basically shoved in your face around every corner makes the games feel so much more real to me, outlast ain't scared to show this unlike so many other horror titles. Additionally some character designs like for example Trager are so iconic, i wouldn't ever be able to forget them, not to mention the characters in outlast trials who take it to a whole other level
that's a really great point! the scares come in a way that other horror games seem apprehensive to dip their toes into. the nudity and their more sadistic depiction of cults really makes everything more disturbing and terrifying. I'm playing through outlast 2 rn and those were my exact thoughts. there's so much unnerving imagery in it.
outlast was a good horror game one of the best, followed up by outlast 2 it was good too
i'd certainly agree! i'm playing through outlast 2 now. i remember when it came out everyone was disappointed. perhaps i'll have to give my thoughts
@@driftdown what really? I didn't know so many people didn't like outlast 2, it was a good sequel too, of course the first one was better but 2 wasn't bad, now outlast trials I don't like that one honestly why would they make an outlast coop mode, just a story is enough
@@rangershot outlast 2 was "liked" but it seems like most people agree that it was a step in the wrong direction. I've gathered this impression both review sites and people that I used to talk to (ah). i really want to try outlast trials with my friends and solo. i definitely have my worries though...
Keep it up! Great video
thank you man! I certainly will
putting my suit and tie on for this kino
thank you king!! i'll wear one to match
Amazing video. I never quite realised how Outlast built upon the stalker type of enemy made popular by re2 and re3. The stalkers in those games were great but their presence was always diminished by the technology of the time. Walker was an evolution, though id still say nemsis is the best stalker overall simply due to how re3 handles encounters with him + its branching path system. Id even go as far as to say that it was Nemsis and his unique gameplay that allowed Outlasts stalkers to be forgotten. Its kinda unfair considering Nemsis is a survival horror stalker where as outlasts stalkers are not. Theres only so much you can do with running and hiding where as survival horror has so many more opportunities to scare and challenge the player. Outlast (and walker as a result) got lumped in with these more decision based games however and got unfairly crushed due to its own simplicity. Simplicity isnt bad, but it wasnt going against equally simple games. Walker ended up being the less cool little brother of Nemsis
that's a really intelligent point! being a survival horror stalker, there's a lot more interactivity that can be had with Nemesis. With how original he was for the time, I can totally understand that. What I love about Walker is how he revitalized interest in hunter enemies. It seems like a lot of games today take more from Walker instead of Nemesis which is a shame given how much depth the latter provided. I look forward to seeing a horror game get super creative with a stalker again
Great quality and commentary, you just earned yourself a subscriber. Keep it up.

I just finished the game again and got platinum for it. My favorite game narrative wise.
there really isn't anything quite like it. the story was really great!
back with another banger as usual 🙂↕️
muhehehe
I think the true horror of Alan Wake 2 is that it's only available on Epic Games store for pc.
ahhh!!! D:
Dude put a content warning before you say something like that
@@breguera77 Yeah IO Interactive must have *really* needed the money for Alan Wake 2, like as in if they didn't make a deal with Epic Games Alan Wake 2 probably wouldn't have gone past planning/ pre-production. In my opinion Steam's dominence on the pc market is good dispite the fact that we are just buying a licence to download them. On the other hand there is GOG which prides itself with the fact that you can actually own your video games in this modern era of gaming. But Epic, just sucks and I avoid it like the plague.
@ you’re right. given the scope of the game and the fact that they wanted to keep the IP tells me the same. It’s a shame that epics CEO would rather lose money than allow anything to be sold on Valve. This game should’ve printed money
Nice review.
thank you!!
The music in game is phenomenal!
i agree! i wish i made more of a point of that in this video
I guess I don't need to play Alan Wake 2 now, because your opening monologue basically describes my entire life... 😅
nooooooo!!
Woke trash with terrible gameplay. You get so little bullets and enemies regenerate as soon as you leave a room. Most optimal way to play is to just run past everything, which gets really boring. Combined with cheap, college-level FMVs for cutscenes.
Other than one part, Ill never understand how this game is woke. It's actually an amazing and unique game.
@@unfiltered577 Look man if you like bad writing then by all means. It flopped so obviously most people don't.
@mjohnsen8606 I dont really think that it's bad writing. It kind of reminds me of a Bioshock game. It also is only considered a flop because it hasn't made back all its money.
