I never knew, so naive of me to think Taiwan is nothing but hi-tech; the culture is so rich, and what's more amazing is that all this I am getting to know now has nothing to do with the Chinese culture whatsoever. Salute to Formosa and Clay Joule.

Awesome sound of Formosa

My late husband was Amis-Formosan. He escaped from the political tyranny back in the mid 1900's and fleet to the western world. I still remember he played his familiar guitar tunes to recalling his memories of home. I cried when I hear the melody. I missed him very much.

Deep sense in therapy I felt in this sound. My father went through this tyrantal period, and we were targeted secretly with fears of life threats. My family was targeted for over 20 years after my father took the entire family and fleet to NYC, and I was only 6 years old. They sent threat letters to our address periodically and strange-looking packages that packed in black plastic bags, and we had to call the bomb squad to remove the packages many times throughout the years. I dropped my tears when I heard this tune. My father played the violins, and Maolin love song was often played around in our house. I am touched.

The production of this track is amazing. I assumed there is a deep message into the song that evolves around the spirit of the island itself. TWO THUMBS UP!

Ah, this tune has whisked me back to the days when our family fancied that island as our little slice of paradise. My rendition of the Maolin Love Song saga is a charming relic from over 60 years ago. This tune originally strutted onto the scene as a folk song, aiming to blend Mandarin lyrics that sing the praises of a stunning aboriginal girl from Taiwan. The Rukai artist was certainly wishing that the Chinese migrants-or shall we say, occupants-were tuning in to this delightful tune. When the song took the society by storm, Madam Chiang couldn't help but accuse the artist of being downright rude to her "beauty". In Madam Chiang's mind, she was the reigning queen of beauty in the whole cosmos. She summoned the vice president 陳誠 Cheng-Chen, the second most notorious tyrant in the Chinese KMT, to apprehend the artist and issued a dramatic decree for the entire island of Taiwan to cease playing the song, complete with threats of death penalties. Talk about taking things up a notch! The artist found himself in quite the pickle, detained and interrogated for what felt like an eternity-months, if not years-before finally being set free to rejoin his tribe. The tune was silenced for more than a decade before it received a modest revival, thanks to the late president Chiang Chin Kou, the son of Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang Chin-Kou was a slight better leader, yet Taiwan was still dancing to the tune of martial law. So, he decided to make that song the star of the pre-military training camp entertainment, while also letting it echo through the Chinese boy scout camps, all under his watchful eye. Did the song get nabbed? Absolutely! Chiang Chin Kou has graciously permitted the general public and individuals to belt out this tune once more, even after it was officially snatched up by the party as a pre-military camp anthem. That's why nearly every Taiwanese guy raised there knows this catchy tune, yet few are brave enough to uncover the true creator of Maolin Love Song, as it's become a bit of a taboo topic that most wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. So, who's the mastermind behind this gem, and who gets to claim it as their own??? I’m completely in the dark here. While the majority of the pilfered treasures from the island have found their way back to the oh-so-legitimate government, the artist remains as elusive as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, thanks to the charming antics of the tyrant KMT. Well, I suppose we can label it as a world-class asset now, chuckle chuckle. Clay... YOU ROCK!

I know this song; it was a must-sung song in boyscouts and army in Taiwan. In this new version, it sounds world class; the original version is mainly the lyrics that I found interesting. I did not know the deep story of this, but yes, the original artist is hidden. I should ask my uncles. Maybe they know what happened to this person under martial law. I hope KMT didn't murder him.

Good to rejoin this matter that was once taboo and slowly being faded due to the strong Chinese culture invasion of the Formosa island. The Maolin love song was a powerful melody that embossed in almost every Taiwanese man in my father's generation. As far as why Chiang's wife ordered to ban this song, I think this is a no-brainer question, knowing what that filthy kind of government does the best. Back to the music itself, this recreation is very much a global level; it helps to lift the underated Rukai tribe to the world. One example of the Drinking Song by Amis Tribe of Formosa, the German band Egnima used the Amis chanting vocal and not giving the original credit to the song "Return To the Innocent." got a legal claim, which turned into a compensated outcome. Since that was a commercial song that had been taken for profit and granted, but in the ever-rapid transition of the music industry, the editorial means are far greater in significance to help any Aboriginal culture to be heard or seen by the world.

So, to say being a motherland is more than proper. We have in Japan the same aboriginals that also came from Formosa originally, but many were killed by the old Japanese Imperial Government and Samurai period. That is why Formosan is so precious to the world and should not be solely claimed by the Chinese government. Formosa belongs to the world; Taiwan is the world.
