My compulsion to create is fueled by the chaos that comes with being a mom to three very active kids, business owner, and chief dog walker. Not only does my family, especially my daughters, inspire me to be true to myself, they drive me to create. In part so that they don’t drive me crazy! Whether at the end of the day, in the early morning darkness, or in a stolen moment of quiet I find joy and respite in fabric and words. My goal is to help you find the same thing. Here you will find free video tutorials and more on quilting and creativity.
Quilters' Playcation Adventure Sewalong 2024 Week 44
In need of some comfort sewing I turned to one of my all time favourites: an improv curve. I played with a variation on a classic Drunkard's Path quilt block. We have 6 fabrics, not 4, so we get some bonus blocks at the end of this and that's okay!
Remember, for every curved cut you want make in your block, add 1" of fabric to the square you start with. Want a 5.5" square at the end and 2 cuts? Then and 2" and start with a 7.5" square. It's a great rule of thumb for curves.

Starting the last row of our quilt! If you are making each block in order, that is. It's improv quilting, of course, so you could be doing wildly different things and that would be awesome too. Inspired directly by Alexandra Kingwell today. Her improvisational quilts are beautiful! I first saw her in the Studio Art Quilt Auction and that piece is what got us here. www.alexandra-kingswell.co.uk/...

Finishing up the 6th row of our 49 week sew along with a block to purposely use some of our scraps. Combined with straight strips it creates a dynamic, but simple block.

This week is all about playing with angles and the resulting chevron shape. It's a nice bit of sewing in the overall layout. There is plenty of flexibility in the technique to make your own block unique. More or less background pieces, wider or narrower strips, 1 strip, 2, 3, or even 4. Have fun playing!

Just a zig, not a whole zig zag. Coming to you from my new studio! I've finally moved in and this was my first bit of sewing in the space. So glad to share it with you. Don't worry, I will do a full studio tour once I am fully unpacked. Also, stay tuned for new classes, live, virtual, and recorded.

The scraps never end, which means the ideas for scrappy blocks keep coming! Discussion includes some studio updates with important whiteboard news. Let's just say I have a very happy teenager coming. Oh, and some hot gossip from the neighbourhood!

A classic in the improv quilting world, the plus sign block is a great addition to this quilt. Follow along with me as I use a good handful of scraps, discuss a couple of ways to start the plus signs, share tips for those of us who might be a bit more... particular (and those who aren't), and finally assemble the whole block. This includes me vocalizing my thought process as I explain how to pu...

I was in the mood to make a cake. Just for the improv quilt block, only. In truth, I was in the midst of making homemade Oreos when I filmed this live! And, as promised, here is the recipe: eatnorth.com/eat-north/recipe-messy-baker-double-stuff-uber-oreo-cookies Charmian Christie at The Messy Baker is who wrote it. It is a family favourite in this house.

On to the 6th row! This pointed block is the beginning of the bottom of the quilt. That is, if you are making the blocks in order and sewing them in order! Of course you can just make the block and have fun with it too. I started with scraps and used some cleaned up edges from my yardage of fabric. She's graphic and efficient.

In this installment of the free improv quilting series, Cheryl Arkison plays with wedges and improv curves to create a block with a definite beach ball inspiration. Includes a studio update - the wet and sad. Bonus easy protein drink recipe. Really recommend this one!

Not gonna lie, this is one of my favourite blocks of the whole sew along this year. I think there is tremendous potential for this block all on its own, yet it still looks cool here. Using improv quilting techniques for curves and that playful spirit, this picture frame block is a great addition to the sew along. Michelle has already sketched out some possibilities of using the block in repeat....

This week we are playing around with an old favourite - the pinwheel block. Instead of just two fabrics, though, we are using a strip set for one of the fabrics. The discussion covers two different ways to make the block. Makers choice depends on whether you want the strip set to be the same on all four triangles of the pinwheel or if you are okay with the variation. Making it improv means you ...

This week deserved a double rainbow. Some joy after a rant about my dog's behaviour. I think we might have to find more double rainbows in this sew along because the joy helped.

Inspired by one of my mountain hikes (I am so lucky to live so close to our Rocky Mountains!) I felt the need to bring a rainbow leaf to our sew along. I was catching my breath on the uphill switchbacks. Usually we look out to the big view, but this time I was noticing the leaves and flowers much closer to me. Don't forget to say hello to our guest pooch, Charlie.

Week 15 Quilters' Playcation Adventure Sewalong
I love the grunge fabrics...and the blocks are so much fun. Thanks for sharing ❤
So glad this came up in my feed tonight. Thank you for sharing the way you do. I'm going to send your RUclips link to my Modern Guild. You taught at the Niagara guild several years ago. I was not a member then but saw your talk. We have grown since then and have many new quilters trying to learn modern techniques.
❤❤❤
love this block!
I actually live in Kentucky USA and I can relate to your daughter. I probably have 15+ hoodies because that’s what we call them here too and I am ALWAYS FREEZING!! Hubby burns up so the A/C is running and I’m dressed like I live at the North Pole in the house during the summer. 🥶🥶🤣
I've still never figured out why people in Saskatchewan call them Bunny Hugs.
@@cheryl_arkison I have no clue. It sounds cute though. 🤣🤣
Hi Cheryl, just found you on you tube, nice video,s. My late mum was from Canada ❤
❤❤❤❤
That was a fun block. I haven’t been following all the weeks, but this is tempting me!
I am very tempted by this one to play with all my scraps!
So normal to sew straight seams, never thought that a curved seams is possible. Will give it a try, when my current project is completed. As a beginner, it's a challenge. Thanks for the tutorial...from Singapore 🇸🇬
You can do it! It really isn't hard once you understand the technique. There will be a lot of opportunities to play with in the sew along.
Hi Cheryl. Thanks for sharing this series on youtube as I can'tseem to make it through a whole Instagram video without accidentally stopping and having to start again. So frustrating. I've been watching and hope to start in a couple of weeks.
Haha! I know exactly what you mean.
Notice you always start sewing from the bottom of the block. Keeping each side about the same edges to cut away, to get your desired size?
Yup. You could sew from the top in too. Both work.
Cool Tea/Coffee Mug. Love the video.
Very good instructions on cutting and placement. Love the block.
Thank you!
Very good lesson thank you!!!
Thank you so much!
Great block!! Thanks
Great tutorial. Love it on RUclips!
This is fun! Will be looking for fabrics! Love your grunges!
Beautiful X!
Thanks!
Thoughts from Australia.
Happy Monday
Hi How can I sign up for your little scrap party on Saturday?
Oh Alison, I'm sorry. I ended up cancelling it due to low enrolment. Hopefully again in the fall! Sign up on www.quiltersplaycation.com to receive all event notifications.
Great palm tree thanks
Can you give us the name of the designer again please, Rashida?
Rashida Coleman Hale. She is also a member of the Ruby Star Society designers.
I enjoy the “chit chat” - I’m quilting for fun! Thank you!
Sorry you’re feeling really off. Hope you get over your COVID soon
I saw a friend's adventure sew along from last year, loved it. I am hoping this will be just as exciting. I want to join. I am a bit late starting.
You can join at any time!
Excellent tutorial!!!!! However, it might just be me - too much non-relent chit chat in beginning.
how rude you are, no need for that comment to Cheryl
It's just my style. These videos are always going to be a bit personal and full of personality.
Thank you Cheryl, am jumping in on this one! I am currently piecing my quilt top from last year’s adventure sew along … which was fabulous. I learnt so much from doing it. Love these first wave blocks. 🌊🐬
This technique would be good for the treasure map sand too. ;-)
You are absolutely right!
I did this earlier in the month for do.Good Stitches. It was nice slowing down the stitches. I followed a tutorial by Red Pepper Quilts called Tutorial: Cutting and Sewing Free Hand Curves
This is great! I'm hoping to do the Playcation this year. I'll have to figure out how to get the live notifications on RUclips...
Make sure you are subscribed here and set up to receive notifications. But don't worry, I will remind everyone in newsletters and on Instagram.
I'm excited! Thank you, Cheryl, for another excellent adventure!
wonderful, I was so happy to find this.
I LOVE this! Thank you!
This made my morning, and gave me a “playcation” in between work. Seeing this quilt idea is excellent therapy and I so appreciate your creative ideas! My explanation at the moment would be “ grateful!” Thank you Cheryl!
Please make more videos
Love it!!!!
Thank you so much!
I love my spiders, too, and find I use them for nearly all my machine sewing. Great block! One could add some other symbols (#, +, *, etc) to make cuss words. LOL
You definitely could! It has crossed my mind for sure.
Thanks Cheryl! Easy to do. Will be my leader ender soon. And a quilt by summer...
Perfect! How is your progress? I am nearly finished my quilt top - I had to make A LOT of exclamation points to get through.
Doing good, Cheryl!
Thanks Elle!
Where can I find the free download for the slub block quilt?
Thanks, needed this today!
