MLS goes apeshit over Eurosnobbery.
Tuesday 7th June 1994
I want those gunbslls
“British fans have a reputation for being drunk, nasty and violent.” Oh they really earned that reputation in the 80s. By the 90s however they had mostly shaken off that kind of thing
Brilliant bit of football history, always been fascinated by the US national team in the build up to hosting the World cup '94.
I love soccer always have always will but I hate the condescending tone of this piece.
1994 was the beginning of Soccer in the United States may it live forever
Pablo, I’ve been meaning to watch this for the longest time, and finally got around to it tonight. One thing I can tell you is that we NEED to unearth that Ted Koppel ‘94 jersey, and get it on display at the HOF. It’s too bad that it doesn’t have his name on it, but if it’s legit, it’s legit.
Alexi Lalas has changedddd haha
I remember watching this when it aired and decided to give the World Cup a watch. I was quickly hooked and did the best I could do post WC to continue following the sport which as anyone who knows was nearly impossible back then. I’m Italian American so Italy’s run to the final helped and now I’m currently a Juventus season ticket holder flying from Philadelphia to Torino as often as I can.
Ted Coppel a true journalist. If this was Brian Stelter he’d be crying racism and blaming Trump we don’t progress as a soccer country.
In 30 years the US has come a long way. Now there's more American fans than any other nation at foreign world cups, and the best player in the world is in MLS -- But we still can't get rid of Alexi Lalas!
Wow! Beautiful seeing that Mexico is still the U.S. Dad when it comes to soccer because even with the worst team ever we were able to manage to make 4 points in Copa America and the U.S. with the greatest generation only managed to make 3 points, lol.
We left the US in 91 and then the World Cup came 94
I had just finished up playing for a D! college team in the Big East back then. Played against Lalas a couple of times vs. Rutgers. Pro soccer wasn't really even a consideration for most college players back then. MLS was still a few years out. Some guys did chase the dream in lower divisions making no money. I took my degree and was happy to start a great career in Manhattan in advertising...but I'll always wonder had I been born 5 years later was a pro career possible? Uggh.. Life's unknowns.
A sleeping giant , if the yanks reallly and I mean really invested in the game they would win the WC . They have the stadiums/ population / money . Any sport they adhere to and fully commit they normally tend to dominate , from a proud Englishman
cringe overload
12:22 lol what? they did their best and did well but world-class? wtf
13:05 if the ball goes in the net its a goal. rofl thanks for explaining that
Thirty years later and the US has not progressed at all and still most Americans couldn't tell you who Christian Pulisic is. The USSF has not only be an abject failure, but they are incompetent.
A Nightline soccer tutorial . . . is exactly why nobody respects North America in the game.
Our World governing body F.I.F.A. meaning Federation International FOOTBALL Association, as The World Name, for The World Game is FOOTBALL ...Fact!.
I fully support the growth of World Football across North America (the U.S. and Canada) Given where you are now 2024 compared to then 1994 you are on a positive progression. I wish you every success for your internal and international Male and Female teams.
Wow, this is great. I was there to cover the USA - Mexico game at the Rose Bowl, I interviewed Mr.Ted Koppel before the game. I just thought he was there as a fan. Awesome story. Thank you so much for sharing. USA USA!
Does anyone know what happened to Marcelo "D"alboa??
Back when the team had real Americans.
😂😂
Half of the players were mixed or born somewhere else 😂. Watch again just like today.
Mixed?
That man was a good coach
Agreed with all Chinese fans.
This team would have advanced at Copa America this year… possessing the only thing the recent team lacked, grit
This squad did just as good as the wc22 squad
Except the 2022 squad was younger and more talented than the 1994 squad.
Still feel bad for Tab Ramos and what happened to him during the match against Brasil
Watching an almost full stadium mls game on a Wednesday night with a few international world class players. I guess progress was made….maybe in another 40 the US lifts the big trophy is a possibility?
BORA!
In 2024, you’d get these same looks if you asked about Saurabh Netravalkar, Aaron Jones or Andries Gous. Those were three members of this year’s US cricket team.
Whoa! Your crickets have football teams? First women now this!
@@rha7588 Yes, we train crickets to play football, kind of like Pokémon. Room, board, and travel are much more reasonable, but when they play all you hear from the crowd is crickets 🦗.
@@rha7588 Have you ever heard of a bat-and-ball game called “cricket”? It’s a lot like baseball, except when it isn’t at all like baseball.
Marcelo Dalboa? It's Balboa. I can't believe they spelled that wrong
This 30 year experiment failed. Canada is best in concacaf. Can you believe that 30 years ago. We would have been better off doing nothing for 30 years just like back then
Who would have thought that 30 years later USA soccer isn't as good as the 94 team
gave up on the men's 14 years ago womens 10 years ago
Pablo...you are a national treasure
Idk why I had it in my head, even back in 1994, that US Soccer training was primitive and the players were toe poking the ball everywhere. Watching them play and train I'm actually impressed. It wouldn't look so out of place with today's training. Still tho, US Soccer both as an organization and the sport in American society has come a long long way and I think for all the complainers about today's team and environment if they watched this they would have much more appreciation
Ted Koppel was standing on business back in 94..."would choose to watch a good soccer match over the all-star baseball game and day of the week."
30 years later we still suck
16:40 dude is for sure rolling. 😂 👃 ❄️
His pupils were perfectly fine. He definitely was not. But I can appreciate that you were mesmerized while gazing into his eyes. Happy Pride, bud
Thanks for uploading this! We’ve come a long way baby!
Mexican here, the only mfer i hated but respected was Brian McBride, man that dude was a menace. Donovan is another one but def respect Brian a lot more
Hey, Alexi. Go warm up in a tunnel, you coward. Lol.
thanks for the upload Pablo.
What
Wow.. Never saw this back in the day. And Ted got GAME!! Funny though how they spelled Marcelo Balboa's name wrong.. How ironic when they were trying to promote the game.. lol
10:30 Oh so he was always a dick.
After the 95 World Cup Alexi Lalas will give bad color commentary for the rest of his life.
There was no World Cup in 95
There was a women's world cup in 95
@@APOLLOOKWUONE Ahh, ok. Semantics. Cheers
Many of these guys were teammates and friends. Some of the best ever to play at the time. I'll never forget those days prior to the MLS and playing for the Colorado Foxes. Winning a National Title and getting paid for what we did was from the heart and from passion. These gentlemen certainly laid the groundwork for the current success of today's game.
the usa will never be any good until they call it football. bunch of hacks
What an incredible insight into the development of soccer in this country. Also, Koppel’s got jokes!
It's football all over the world...will you yanks for ones adapt to the rest of the world.
@@yasinsharb9453Shut up and respect the Americans, and go and complain to the Italians because they call it "calcio" and do the same to the Dutch because they call it "voetball".
