We need to redesign our roads, streets, and highways to make real progress toward making self driving vehicles safe for us to use them. Otherwise we risk having both self driving vehicles and those driven by human judgement in conflict with each other. So, why not set up a test bed road system to determine if one system is better than the other? Because if we intend to cut into the numbers of fatal and near fatal accidents (something in the range of 40,000 deaths per year) on our present human driven vehicles with all the potential for confusion and mis judgement in our present designs like, off ramps and one way streets in our cities.
