    Just seeing your video I won't say wasting but rather missing out! The foot as you call it is actually the digger and if you'll go up from where you cut to the gut ball, make a "V" cut or semi circle cut around it and remove, you can remove the gills also, then "butterfly" the whole digger and remove the rest of the guts while running under cold tap water. It's a really large piece of the clam that is great pan fried with egg wash and panko!! It is as tender and tasty as razor clam! Another trick to remove the neck skin is to just soak in hot tap water for awhile, we would remove all the necks first then soak while we cleaned the rest of the "diggers" by then the skin peeled right off, then you don't have to wait for them to freeze, hope this helps, enjoyed your vid!

      @@joepodunk284 This is great information! I want to make sure I don't waste anything, and from what you've described there is more to the "digger" than what I have been saving. I'll give your method a try next time. Thanks also for your tips on removing the skin from the necks, I'll try that too. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and share your knowledge on this. @WesternEclectic Ya absolutely! I'm glad to help, I've seen others do the same cut on the "foot" with razor clams and I almost lose my mind, 😆 Plus there is what we call fat in the digger that the gut tubes run through, I always try to preserve as much of that as I can. I've seen some who will scrape it out because it is a lot easier to get the gut tubes out but the fat is flavor!! Basically it's like the way you cleaned the Cockle digger. I butterfly the whole digger all the way to the tip of the foot that way it stays the same thickness for even frying. We would always go for "Blue Necks"(as we call them)from August into the fall, they have the most fat Again I was simply pointing out what you were missing out on. And your welcome, Good luck to you.

    One solution Ive been thinking of is to just throw them all in a tub and start vibrating/shaking them. In theory, the copper ones should sink to the bottom, while the zinc ones should float to the top. From there it should be easier to hand sort them, but might be a good way to do it in bulk. For me, Im actually more interested in the zinc ones since they can be melted on a stove and used to cast stuff.

    • @WesternEclectic
      @WesternEclectic 2 месяца назад

      Cool idea. I wonder if the different densities would be enough for it to work, such that with shaking the copper ones would "sink" to the bottom.... If you try it please let me know! That would be a really fast way to sort them. And I never thought of casting things out of the zinc ones. Sounds fun.

    Hi, thanks! Your approach is VERY compatible with mine: enjoy the mushrooms you know and continue cautiously expanding your range. I lived for some forty years in the PNW - if you want to call it that - namely in the south-western most part of Canada, in Victoria, BC. And after a previous career as a hobby mushroom forager, growing up in Germany, I, of course, continued foraging for mushrooms here. I have found lots, got acquainted with lots of new ones and had a lot of fun. And I have read and heard a lot about candy caps, but I never got confident enough to collect what looked like them or look a-likes. And that despite the fact that in Germany, I would draw on some 50 or 60 kinds/species to fill my larder, and here I can rely on some 35 kinds/species. Would love some more information on candy caps. Jochen

      @@jmoehr747 Hi Jochen, thanks for checking in and for sharing a bit about your background. Learning about mushrooms seems to be an ongoing endeavor; there's still so much more I hope to learn. I was able to collect some candy caps with my daughters a few days ago here in Oregon. They had fun telling the real candy caps from the "fake" ones, the latter having a slightly brighter orange colors and, perhaps, most significantly, a slimy cap. So, it's definitely possible to differentiate between what is a candy cap and what isn't, but you are smart to be cautious. Good luck and happy hunting!

      Good observation! I just checked the ODFW fishing regulations and it does indeed state the allowable methods of taking crayfish are "[h]and, baited lines (no hooks allowed), net, rings and traps." I would argue that in this case the hook was simply used to hold the bait and not in the traditional way a hook would be used (i.e., to actually hook/pierce the crayfish), so this should count as a "baited line" and still be OK. But, I'm not a lawyer nor I do I work for the ODFW, so it's certainly possible there may be issues with using a hook to hold the bait. I guess to play it 100% safe, one could just find another method of attaching the bait to the line without using a hook. Anyway, thanks for checking in and giving me the encouragement to look into this. Take care!

    can you please give a link where you ordered these traps?

      @@DimaDemchenkov Sure. I ordered the traps in the video from: www.trapperarne.com As far as I know you can still order traps from them. You might also check out: www.procrayster.com Their traps cost a bit more but are excellent. Please note that I am not affiliated with either of these sellers, but I have had good luck dealing with both. I hope that helps!

    ... Just flip it next to your head/ear. The coins that say:" tingggg!" Are copper. The ones that go " tnk." Those are zinc. Tinc is zinc. This is much faster and easier to do unless you have severe hearing loss.

      @@hydrophobicbathtowel6816 This works! The two pennies definitely have a different sound if I listen carefully. Thanks for sharing this. Reminds me of how a silver quarter has a lovely sound when flipped, whereas a more modern clad quarter just has kind of a dull thud. I guess in addition to having more buying power, our money used to sound better too, haha. Thanks again!

      @@WesternEclectic you should notice after a while that they also feel different. Its not something i can explain, nor would i rely on it, but ive noticed after a year or two of flipping to identify the sound i can accurately guess if a coin is solid copper as soon as i pick it up in my fingers. Im not sure what quality i am feeling? Perhaps because of the different densities of metals i am noticing a slight variation in weight? Idk, because i cant pin point the exact reason i dont rely on this feel, but its fun to guess the metal and then flip for sound to see if i got it right. Kinda game-ifies the process and makes it more fun. How you flip will affect how strong the sound is too which can make things easier. A nice strong flick of your thumb with the tip of your nail will give a louder clearer sound to listen to.

      @@hydrophobicbathtowel6816 Good point and sometimes I'm convinced there is a different feel too (I thought maybe I was just imagining that until I read your reply). The zinc ones just feel kind of... Huh, I guess I can't describe it either, haha. I was going to say "slippery" but that's not quite right. Of course, some of the ones I find metal detecting don't need much examination: If there are literally holes eroded into the coin, it's zinc. Boo.

      @@WesternEclectic i think our fingers are more sensitive than we realize. Its possible we are just picking up on the difference in weight relative to volume of space and so our mind is sort of abstractly and vaguely assigning a difference in density to each material which would have been a useful skill years ago when we were still making things out of rock and sticks. Being able to intuitively select the best raw materials to make tools with would have saved alot of time and energy and increased chances of survival. Just a theory though.

      Thanks for checking in. This was at a pond a couple hours south of Portland. I don't like to post the exact locations of my spots publicly, but if you're in the area and interested in going I'd be happy to tell you the location, just send me an email at westerneclecticbusiness@gmail.com and I'll get back to you.

    When they get slightly inky, are they still edible?

    • @WesternEclectic
      @WesternEclectic 8 месяцев назад

      Good question! My family and I have often eaten them when the bottom of the caps are just starting to turn black. I just cut that part off and it has never been an issue. If, however, a lot of the cap has already turned to black goo, then I pass. One of the challenges with shaggy makes is that they're so ephemeral: They seem to spring up overnight, and deliquesce in a short time. At any rate, please remember the golden rule of mushroom hunting: If in doubt, throw it out! Good luck and happy hunting.
