Sicilian Rum? It's a Thing! The Making of Mater Rum with Hugo Gallardo
In this episode, we're excited to take you inside a very new emerging rum locale - Sicily, the Italian island where Distilleria Alma is bringing back sugarcane cultivation. Since 2021, Hugo Gallardo and his co-founders have been crafting cane juice rum from multiple varietals and bottling it under the label Mater Rum.
We were lucky to try multiple bottlings of Mater and can confirm that it's worthy of your interest not just because of its interesting origin, but also because it tastes pretty damn good. So obviously we had to get the full story from Hugo!
We discussed:
The long history of sugarcane in Sicily (and why it disappeared)
How the distillery almost ended up in the Philippines
The ongo...

there was never a doubt Arminder would win. Don't know why you would have him in this contest well knowing that his palate is better than both of you put together. He is in Cali where you can get everything that is available in the U.S. and you guys are in Hickville in southern U.S. and Scott from Different Spirits RUclips channel would have curb stomped you both also. You can't argue over Don Q and expect to have any shred of dignity left. LOL !!!

Hey guys, thanks for the episode; as for the ABV nuances, I think it might not matter - however, it might be connected with filtration levels; over the last year, I enjoyed an 11 yo CDI Australian Rum at 43% (might be cask strength) which was even hazy without diluting it. It was full of flavor, great mouthfeel. And I cannot imagine it being significantly more flavourful at say 46%. However, it's just a hunch, speculation, no blind tasting evidence.
