Alright, I know I am 11 months late, but bear with me. I think I have finally cracked the meaning behind why Bendy retreats after revisiting old knowledge. There once around this time, which I remember fondly as I saw Bendy when "Bird poop" was him, it was a popular theory that Bendy was Joey. It came out around chapter 3, when Alice was confirmed to be Susie. (Beta was still used at that time) Also, turning on subtitles reveals quotes from the man himself, Joey Drew. Why was he nice to Henry in the beginning? Then suddenly mad? Its all coming together. Joey IS the ink demon, seeing his old friend, and remembering their past..issues. Then, finally once opening the door, he realized what he was doing to his old friend. Joey is the demon, the monster he created.
