    Hi Robert. I have tagged my comment on to this video. I just wanted to say that I watched into the great solitude on channel 4 when it was first broadcasted and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was 24 then. So imagine that when I chanced putting in the search engine of RUclips after all these years I was able to watch it again. I will definitely watch the other documentaries as well. Thank you again. Matt

    Welp I was gonna add my two cents worth, but only because I wanted to congratulate you on your fine effort to canoe the whole of Britain. Aye, but my two cents were diminished and so I can only offer you my: Congratulations on a fine effort to canoe the whole of the British Isle - from England to Scotland. WTG

    Thank you for your comment…. I’d say there are levels of respect and appreciation for life. To take a life can be seen many ways. I’ve a similar disagreement with people who consider hunting a sport….. a sport is like tennis or football where willing contestants agree to get together….you could even include skiing where it’s a contest between you and the mountain……Applied to hunting birds or deer I’ve never heard of a deer or bird consenting to be part of the ‘sport.’ I admire Cleveland Amory who turned the 2d amendment gun rights argument on its head by creating the bumper sticker that said, “I support my right to arm bears.”

    Wow, so happy to see you came through my back garden. The yellow pickup was at Walton Quarries just above Bolton, spent many a summer day rock climbing in them. Sad to say things haven't improved on the Eden 40 years on. But I have enjoyed a trip or two down the Lune and Spey. I think the rapid where you got a soaking is known as The Washing Machine

    "Killing birds and animals is murder there's no other word for it" is a little absurd. There is another word for it, actually several. Killing and murder are not synonymous lol so ridiculous. I agree with respecting and eating the game they harvest, but equating it with murder is ridiculous. Even the bible distinguishes killing from murder.

    St. Mary's of Bethlehem Hospital, London, was the first "lunatic" asylum in the UK , founded in 1247. The pronunciation of Bethlehem was shortened to "bethlem" by the local people, and because the word "bedlam", meaning 'a scene of uproar and confusion' , sounds like "bethlem', it was used from then on to describe lunatic asylums. "It's bedlam in there!" I remember (in Talking to Angels?) you talking about the restraining method used on you Robert, I don't know the spelling but it sounded like 'packs'. This has been a very interesting video, thanks very much for that 🙂🛶

    Have you ever encountered no-see-em's, or the Johnson's fly (biting house flies) in the artic?...both of them are found in the canadian boreal forest, I'm sure you know, and they can also "want you", really want you badly. Lol. Thanks for the updates my friend.

  • @tonypaddler

    I too prefer the 50 map but living here in the UK, the landscape is smaller with the geographical features closer together and the 50 is often very useful in identifying which of the myriad of tracks is the one that you want. I also have a set of 25:000 to 1 maps which give 4x more detail than the 50. I use these usually just when I'm exploring places when I know I might be straying from a 'legal' right of way (only in England and Wales; Scotland doesn't have idiotic trespass laws). When canoeing in Canada I used a 100 scale map which was more than adequate.

  • @jackEnglishmachines
    @jackEnglishmachines 7 месяцев назад

    I must say I do like the 50. But I have cut the sections out so that they fit in my map bag. What I love is that extraneous detail, especially when the river crosses topo lines . I know that there are rapids ahead or falls . all often take a highlighter marker and draw over the maps indicating my trajectory to simplify it at the level you like. I was first introduced to your life by that very trip on the great Fish river, broadcasted on PBS . the one, incidentally, that Franklin's men tried to find on there their last days of survival From King Williams Island. The immensely of the land and its bitter elements is what I am sure has preserved it. It has given life and also taken it.

    What a great story! I think I'd have a hard time with the mosquitoes, but I would love a long journey. I even take short hikes at a slow, leisurely pace. Another friend of mine calls it sauntering and highly recommends it as a way to immerse yourself in the experience of being in nature.
