R1t vs Articulation Ramp
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Год назад
The R1T Takes on the articulation ramp. Driver rear wheel and passenger front wheel slip while the other two wheels don't seem to have enough power to move the vehicle higher up the ramp. Would a electronic locker give the driver control in a situation like this to increase the power to other wheels?

Gassing Up A Rivian (April Fools -sort of - I used a gas/propane generator)
Honestly, a tire plug kit would be a better solution.
Why this is one of the best car companies out there it has helped me many times and they’re very easy to get a hold of
I'll stick to sand. No thanks.... $85,000 trucks only go off-road if you have a $10,000+ reserve sitting in the bank account for damages.
That’s not the tank trap. Thats the mud pit. Those trucks couldn’t do the trap gate keeper
Anyone know if this is still a persistent issue, or if there've been any acknowledgement of trying to correct it in the second generation rivians?
Quad motor or dual motor? I don't think quad has shafts connecting both sets of the wheels i think each wheel is individually driven, i feel like the software tuning needs work. If dual motor, then there would be a front and rear drive shaft going through a diff so in this case definitely should have a locker.
That’s horrible
I tried to run a small 5500 btu AC and it tripped it immediately :\
Glad my car is simple and has no suspension manifold. I wanted a Rivian until I saw some videos on how bad their service is, sending a Rivian certified tow driver, who sees vehicle and says...what is THAT? While the guy is freezing and the Rivian is bricked.
160miles total rqnge off road?
🗑️
If he'd had better tires he'd gotten out of there easily
3:11 pretty disappointing that all 4 wheels did not seem to be going and help him on that bank.
Was hat ihm das Auto denn böses getan ,das er es so behandelt ?
Have you tried this again since the software updates?
It is on my to do list for later this month. Picking up my son from college on Friday… he will help spot me on the ramp. Stay tuned.
I have a R1t on order. I never got to drive one with the offroad tires on it I hope it is not to loud on the highway what do you think about your tires for road use as far as road noise?
The driver is the problem, and the idiots around him.
Get rid of the broken parts and fab it
Is the "Stay off Mode" a new feature released during an update and if so has this cured the phantom drain issues Rivian was having while parked?
Those motors are SCREWED 😂
I thought it had them. If they can hack it to do a tank turn, they can make it do anything.
Did you try sand? That should better mimick a locker.
That is an interesting point. I did this before sand mode was launched, so I’ll go back in the next week or two and give it a try.
@Rex Briggs I figured, as that was a newer feature they released. Also a snow mode. But that just eases the petal a bit from what I have seen. Be interested if what you find with those 2 new modes. Thanks for the videos!
I also wondered why Rivian doesn’t have a software locker for things like this. Thank you for making this video!
It's not what you bought, it's what you built.
How do you like the regen for "engine braking"? Any issues for those long, steep declines?
It is helpful off road to be sure. On road-trips, it seems like recent software dials it down on long descents to manage how much regen it can take in.
😂
The hummer has a "virtual locker", why can't Rivian figure it out?
My experience in a mud hole was that Soft Sand Mode works great at getting all four wheels spinning…the brief view of the screen I didn’t see that option…have you tried this since the OTA? 1:22
Good suggestion to try sand mode. I may have time this week to give it a try, if I can talk my neighbor into spotting me. He just got a R1T too.
That Rivian is just too heavy for mud. That's why literally no one has reviewed it in that environment.
That’s an interesting observation. Once we have a winch, I’d like to test it in the mud. I did have the experience in mud on and up slope where it just spun and I had to back down. Some of that is tires, I suspect.
Why were you in off road rally mode and not the rock crawl?
We started in rock crawl mode. Then tried rally, then tried all purpose. We tried different modes to see if we could get a different outcome.
can't believe you did that with 100,000 dollar truck. what are you thinking omg
Fair comment. But, man, it is so much fun to see what this thing can do.
This is a really excellent test and discussion! Thank you Rex and everyone!
I shared it with Rivian and my guide and she replied and is passing it along, so I hope they will see the thoughtful comments others have added here.
@@rexbriggs3251 Excellent!
@@rexbriggs3251 Have you considered sharing this on Rivian Stories? I believe there are a number of Rivian employees who follow that forum.
What they need to do is incorporate a full send mode that locks all four together and transmits equal power
Off road use only of course
Not equal power or torque but rather making all four rotate at the same rate. Or better yet the same rate modified by steering angle.
@@WilliamAArnett sounds like a plan
I like it too Bihh and Bill. I am sending a link to the comments to my R1T advisor, and maybe it will get some consideration.
Send it to Rivian!!!
Software update!
Not positive so don't quote me but, 4 motors working together, this vehicle is incredible, but limit grip to a single wheel and it's quartered, which paired with a heavy vehicle, might be too much for it to overcome.
Each motor has 200 hp. That’s plenty even if only one has grip. In this case two have grip (LF and RR). The problem is that the software isn’t asking the motors with grip for enough power. Perhaps it’s sensing that the two wheels with no grip are slipping and reducing power to all four?
Push the pedal until the vehicle moves.
You’re not wrong :) But, in certain situations I don’t want to floor it and wait to see if it takes off- that could flip the vehicle. I would like to have control to inch forward.
In rock crawl mode the entire pedal movement equates to 20mph - does that mapping not give you sufficient control precision?
That doesn’t work. It limits the power even at full pedal. Very frustrating!
@@WilliamAArnett so true. It does seem like that could be fixed with software.
wow, that was disappointing..
I’ve had similar problems where there was plenty of traction on one wheel but it got no torque. It seems like a some sort of software fix should be possible. This has been known for a year now. Why haven’t they fixed it????
I actually think its more the motor cant produce anymore torque at 0 rpm. I canceled my order over this, was going to sell my Jeep and get a Rivian. Opted to keep the jeep and get model 3. Still think Rivian is awesome but it certainly isnt a rock crawler. A better rock crawling setup would be duel motor with true locker, so they can use full power side to side.
Each motor has more than 200 horsepower. That’s WAY more than needed to push the truck up that ramp. The problem isn’t that the motor is powerful enough it’s that the software isn’t asking it for any. (Torque at zero rpm is no problem.)
@@WilliamAArnett its torque that is the issue. The max torque is actually made just above 0 RPM's. A jeep in low range produces more power with lockers at a single wheel with a weak little 275 hp motor. The other issue is if it is able to move the wheel its likely to spin like its corked up wheel speed. I think there are a number of mechanical disadvantages here, specially for rock crawling. But only time will tell, guess we will see if they improve without redesign.
@@Story_Teller_Everyone Well, I agree that the R1T isn't a very good rock crawler. But not for the reason you posit. IMHO, it's just a software bug, or maybe a missing software feature (plus fragile suspension and vulnerable bumpers and rocker panels). That these things haven't been fixed is probably just a matter of priorities for Rivian, not fundamentals. Yes, theoretically a 275 hp (260 lb-ft) Jeep (3.6L V6 auto) with both axles locked could put send all its torque to a single wheel. But that would only happen if the engine was at almost 5000 rpm, very unlikely. And even so, that's only a little bit more than the R1T is capable of on a single wheel, 908/4=227, and which is available at (nearly) zero rpm. The Jeep has LESS torque than the one-wheel Rivian at all rpms below 2500. In the RTI ramp test there are two wheels with good traction, not one. With two wheels pulling the R1T has way more torque in all cases. Rock crawling is not about power or torque, it's about traction. In my experience there's never been a case where I needed more than a fraction of the Jeep's power when on the rocks. (I have used all the power in sand but of course that's using all 4 wheels.) (And I've seen plenty of examples of guys trying to use all their power on rocks and the end result was something broken.) The problem is that the software just isn't telling the right motor to produce the right amount of torque.
@@WilliamAArnett love the discussion and sharing point of view and experience. Bill, I hope you are right and Rivian can do a little software update.
Because you weigh so much (7000lbs), I would run a bead-lock wheel , and a non radial tire maybe (BFG baja ta) or a very strong radial mud tire (like a km3). If you don’t , you always risk having your tire come off the bead especially off roading in such a heavy truck. Additionally , it would be nice to air down a bit off road and you can not do that safely with out bead-locks on such a massive vehicle . Better to do it right now . Your range is going to be bad but at least you won’t roll over when ur rims dig into dirt.
This is why they make mud terrains…
Need good mud tires and lockers.
boo hoo. rich guy cant charge his power wheels. give me a break. get a gas car.
Wow, @jo9732, you missed the point. Yes, I have some money (enough for a home charger for my EVs). However, not everyone has that luxury, and some have road-trips where they depend on public chargers, so, I was was taking some of my time out to do some investigation. I hope you have love and positivity in your life for 2023 - even if you don’t choose to try and EV.
@rexbriggs what was the solution from Rivian? I have a similar sound on my front driver side wheel well and I have service scheduled for this Thursday for them to look at it.
Hi, I made a follow up video after the service, and it will have the details when they were fresh in my mind. If I recall correctly, it was a suspension problem that got worse with continued use, which then put more stress on other parts of the suspension, so they had to replace more parts then if it would have been fixed right away. Best wishes in your repair!
Drove by about 50 working gas pumps on the way home yesterday :)
So true. The economic challenge is gas station dwell time is 11min, with average fill up time of about 5min. Moreover, the mini markets have good margins. The EV charging economic model, with 20-50min dwell time should be linked to Denny’s or truck stops or something open 24hrs that pairs with the charge time.
My RUclips friend on the east cost found that the new. Ea chargers made by sk signet work in the cold . It is your btc units that are the problem not all new units
That’s good news! Thanks for sharing the info.
Really great scientific method approach on your part. Abysmal non customer focus on EA’s part by not having one of their own team go around and get these chargers off line in the app if they don’t work. It’s almost like the people that work at EA don’t use their system and the company overly relies on what their software tells them is the case. Not just in this instance but of the ~100 EA charges I’ve gotten in 2022, probably 10% just go horribly wrong and it’s generally problems where the app shows everything is great and you get there and chargers are kaput for any number of reasons. Tesla vs EA, Tesla’s SC are simplified enough that unattended stations seem to be workable. EA’s Rube Goldberg approach (most complicated mousetrap that still sometimes works) really is untenable without a person on the ground at each station babysitting the units and reporting back and/or fixing them. Obviously that’s a dumb and expensive solution and instead EA needs to redesign their whole User Experience to simplify and increase robustness.
You are so right. They need a QA team, which they could recruit from EA members that roadtrip and compensate for data collection. I’d do it for a membership credit. They also should simplify, as you point out. Complexity is expensive. EA, we want you to succeed.
What a disaster. Junk.
Used both the Colorado RANs and though it wasn’t as cold as in the front range the montrose and salida rivian fast chargers worked fine. Around lows 20s F
Way to go. That is great news! Good job Rivian.
EA is just too unreliable for any road trips. At this point I'm looking for ChargePoint or EVGO chargers.
