I am an avid technical diver that has been exploring Lake Mead for almost two decades.
It's another beautiful day at Lake Mead! I'm Russ, and welcome to Mission Scuba.
Although I am a fully renewed and insured PADI Tec Deep and IANTD Technical scuba instructor, I very rarely teach. I hold these certifications mostly for the privilege of mentoring when the moment presents itself.
Join me while I share my adventures diving the lower basin of Lake Mead, and occasionally some of the tips, tricks, & mistakes I've experienced over the years.
My views, opinions, and especially my diving methods are my own, and I advocate nothing other than please, please, please, always dive within your limits and seek the best dive training you can reasonably afford.
Please note that Mission Scuba is a non-commercial, hobby only channel. We do not receive revenue from anyone, or anything, except from my mother that sends me a birthday check every year. Thanks Mom!

what are the part from ram mount you use for the flashlight in front ?
Helpful vid, thanks for posting. I have been certified since 1979, but only just now entered the scooter world by purchasing a DiveX BT Tech last week. It was helpful that you dive primarily in fresh water, since most of my scooter diving will be in Lake Washington, here in Seattle (Your silt commentary was HIGHLY relatable, lordy, lol!). I was curious, I assume that when you reach your destination and dismount from your scooter, you are also removing your Sherwater from its scooter mount and carrying it with you for the dismounted portion of your dive and then remounting it on its scooter mount for the ride back to shore/your exit point, correct?
Hi Matt. The Shearwater on my scooter stays there. I have one on each wrist, plus the one on the scooter itself. A little sickening to think about having $3000 in just dive computers alone. I originally just had a depth gauge on the scooter, but after just a couple of dives I decided it was more convenient and much safer to have a full blown computer on the scooter. I do some pretty spooky dives, so I hate to compromise on gear. Thanks for watching and dive safe!
@@missionscuba Ahhhhh, OK, got it! I had not even considered that you use multiple Shearwater computers (I run the Perdix 2 AI with just a cheapo Cressi as a backup). Obviously you rely on your wrist mounted units for your deco profile, that all fits now, thanks!
awesome🔥
Cheers Mr.
Great video and set-up. What are those plates you are using as the bases of the RAM mounts?
@@meltingfeather Hi friend. They were mounts that were sold by Dive-X a couple of years ago, but they have since discontinued them. Thanks for watching!
That was me and Shawn with Lake Havasu scuba we where both wondering where you came from
That was a surprise to see you two for sure! Good to meet you both! Hope to see you at the lake sometime. I won't be back on the boat until the weather cools off a bit towards the end of August, but I'll be shore diving for July & August. Dive safe!
HAHA, That was us, the 2 owners of Lake Havasu Scuba, Shawn and Leo. We saw you zip by on the scooter and thought, I wonder if that was Russ from mission scuba. Always loved your videos, and now we are on one. Very cool
Good to meet you two! I had the boat packed full of ladies and was parked over in Arizona Cove. I went down to Purgatory and then traveled NE towards the mouth of Black Canyon just to explore around. I saw you guys on the way back while I was at about 40ft depth. I wasn't expecting to see anyone because there weren't any other boats in Black Canyon when we got there. Did you see that cool log I was carrying across the front of my scooter when I passed by? lol. Dive safe guys!
Love it! haha
Hello Vegas water...
Where is this? I have a dpv and im visiting my dad in vegas so I want to give a shore dive a go, I was looking on the map at scuba beach and was thinking of sending it from there and heading twoards boulder island
Hello! This shore dive starts from anywhere along Boulder Beach at Lake Mead. You can pull your car right up to the water's edge and suit up right there. Park roughly at: 36.039901° , -114.780503° Aggregate pile 1 is roughly: 36.042483° , -114.776100° Dive safe and have fun!
I want to get scuba certified soon, I have thalassophobia and am not a good swimmer. I hope I can overcome my fears and start diving.
Time to debrief on how your Mexico trip went! ;)
The Mexico trip was amazing! I did my cave apprentice course with Natalie @ Under the Jungle and her passion and dedication to the training was incredible. We dove 6 straight days, and I was exhausted by the end of the trip. What a great experience! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. Lake Mead is always on my bucket list. Hope I can dive there someday soon.

How do you like that CLX450 suit? Do you have the Cordura top with Polyester bottom? Or did you upgrade to the full body Cordura? Do you find it to be a heavy suit? Did it start off real stiff? Did it loosen up over time and become more flexible? Do you find it uncomfortable at any time, or difficult to reach things (diving sidemount, reaching behind you, for example)? Sorry for the many questions, I'm considering getting one and wanted a users opinion. Thank you.
I love my DUI suit. I have been diving this same suit for the cold months of the year since I bought it in 2010, and it's still in perfect condition, so I would say it has more than exceeded my expectations. It's extremely comfortable and not heavy at all. I have the Cordura up top, and a polyester trilaminate on the bottom. I added knee pads and pockets to the order when I got it. I don't recall it ever being stiff, so I would say it has not gotten more flexible with use. I am not as flexible as I am when I am diving wet, but part of that is because when I ordered this suit, I was 40lbs heavier, so it's a little baggie in the gut now, so if I ordered a new one, it would fit me even better. That being said, I wouldn't say it's restrictive by any means, and it certainly doesn't keep me from reaching things on my tail plate. Dive safe!
Who makes the holders for your lights??
I purchased the light holders at Dive Gear Express. Dive safe!
I’m in havasu let’s go diving

I’ll keep my eyes open for it and give you a shout if it turns up! Thanks for watching. Dive safe!
So where was the treasure? Nice underwater video thou.
Lol. Well that's disappointing! The "treasure" was the 100 year old historic U.S General Land Office survey marker I discovered by accident. It would have been placed on the Colorado river shoreline before they built Hoover Dam, and now it's under water permanently. I guess it was much cooler to see in person than it would be in a video. Thanks for watching, and dive safe!
Just one quick tip. Heading is the direction you are pointing. Bearing is the direction you intend to move towards.
Thanks for the correction, my friend. Dive safe!
How do you dive air to 215?
Hi Jerome. It's a personal choice. Highly debatable of course, but it's a choice I personally make based on many, many factors, and close to two decades of technical diving. At 218ft, my PO2 is 1.6, and technically, I'm diving freshwater, so 1.6 puts me at 225ft, but again, it's a personal choice. Thanks for watching!
@@missionscuba fantastic answer. I am just starting into tech diving, I still try to stay shallow. I am a lake mead diver as well, thank you for the solid response. Make more videos.
I appreciate your honest response! I was expecting you to fire back about how unsafe it was/etc. The tech diving community is quick to judge, and opinions are plentiful, so I intentionally choose not to engage in the "conversations", because they are usually just not a conversation at all. Regardless, congrats on your desire to get into technical diving! You can find my email on my web page. Feel free to shoot me any questions you have. I'll be happy to answer whatever I can. Dive safe!
@@jsgaddis I second the make more videos part!
How often do you go out? Id like to tag along sometime if youre ok with a new dive buddy?
Hi Craig. Thanks for watching! I usually make it out about twice per month. I'm pretty much a loner and most often I dive solo. On top of that, I often don't know when I'm going to dive until the day before, so scheduling with other people is a challenge. What type of diving do you do? I'm always reachable through my website if you have any questions. Dive safe!
I'm looking forward to checking this out when I come back out to visit him!

Ivan! Miss you buddy! Hope you're doing great! Come by and visit us sometime!!
Special thanks to Cody for being my guide and taking me to this great dive site! Thanks buddy!
Thanks for having me! Par for the course, it was a blast diving together!
How far have the water levels risen since they had that extra surge of water from Lake Powell? Are you diving in Lake Mead yet this year?
We dive at the lake a few times a month, year round brother. The water level at Mead is supposed to come up 20 feet by September with the heavy snowpack in the upper Colorado basin. Yay for us! This doesn't affect our diving, but does affect the launch ramps, but we had a 6 foot extension made for our boat trailer that allows us to launch the boat even if the ramp is below a 6% grade. Thanks for watching, and dive safe!
Sweet man! Is diving by yourself a good idea though?
That's a question each diver would have to ask themselves and make their own decision. I'm sure diving alone is not an option everyone would approve of, but for me, it's an acceptable risk. Thanks for watching, and dive safe!
Wow water was a lot clearer than would have thought it would have been. Does it stay that clear when they dump water from Lake Powell?
Hi Ken. The water in Lake Mead is always clearest this time of year. Once it starts warming up, we get some sort of "bloom" that reduces visibility some, but typically if we're diving along the river path, the water is always clear. We'll see if the larger releases from Powell muck it up or not!
Thanks for sharing! Much better water clarity than I saw at the Ag piles today.
Sorry I missed you this weekend! I haven't been on the agg piles in a couple of months. They're so shallow right now! Did you shore dive or boat?
Hey! I'll be back in Vegas shortly and would love to dive with you if you would like a buddy one weekend. I am a local and Tec trained (no mix), so let me know!
Hiya Cody. Let me know what days you're available and I'll see if I can ditch work and head to the lake. You can email me directly from my website at missionscuba.com
@@missionscuba Great, I'll shoot over an email!
Same with cellphones and walkie talkies. Thx for important point 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for the tips! I'm sure this will save some shore divers some struggles. Thanks for watching and dive safe!
Thanks for such a great review. Would you suggest that i get familiar with a doubles tank configuration before i even consider getting a DPV ?
Hi Andrew. Glad you liked the video! I'd like to do an updated video now that I've been diving my Blacktip for a couple of years, but I don't think I'll ever get around to it. The good news is, I still love the scooter, and it's just been amazing to have. Regarding your question about diving doubles before you get the scooter - I would say that if you're already planning to switch to doubles or side mount, then do that first. I say that so you can master your buoyancy and the different diving techniques before you introduce the scooter. On that note - I would never recommend a scooter for a new tech diver. I would think you would want at least 50+ technical dives to really become comfortable before you started adding a scooter to the mix. If you're doing true deep technical dives, it's all too easy to get yourself into a pickle, and a scooter just adds to the trouble you could get yourself into. If you're considering doubles vs side mount: I dove my doubles for over 10 years before I switched to side mount, and the switch was mostly so that I could be a shade more self-sufficient considering I always dive alone. Hope that helps a bit. Thanks for watching and dive safe.
🤦🏻♂️
Did you ever dive on the Big Island in Hawaii?
HI Peter. My only diving in Hawaii has been off the west coast of Maui.
@@missionscuba most of my diving was on the Big Island except the time my dive buddy invited me to Honolulu and got me on a dive boat he was working on. Took me out east of Waikiki and we did a 100 ft dive down to a WWII Corsair that crashed and sank out there. There are plenty of youtube videos of that dive. 2nd was a drift dive where we went thru lava tubes and came up about 1/2 mi from where we started. Great dives that day.
@@missionscuba ruclips.net/video/7jxKB4zbYSA/видео.html
Are you still diving on the plane wrecks in Lake Mead? I moved here from the Big Island 12 years ago and did all my dives there. Left my gear behind but did at least 100 dives on the Big Island, mostly shore dives. Do you run a dive service or are you a private diver? Most of my dives were on the Big Island, but my dive buddy moved to Oahu and invited me over and got me on a dive to a crashed WWII Corsair in 100 ft off the waters of Waikiki Beach. That was a really fun dive.
Mahalo friend. Thank you for the message! I’m a private diver, and I make it out to the lake on average about twice a month. Dive charters come and go here in Las Vegas. Lake Mead is a national park, so to run a dive charter, it requires a fairly expensive permit from the National Park Service, a registered coast guard captain on the boat, and of course insurance, so this typically weeds out that casual diver from running a charter. Thanks for watching and dive safe!
@@missionscuba how cold is the water in the lake? Do you go in with just a wetsuit or use a drysuit instead?
The water temperature at the lake changes based on depth and time of year. It's in the low 50s top to bottom in the winter, and up in the 80s at the surface in the summer. It's always in low 50s down deep. You can see the monthly water temperatures @ www.missionscuba.com Take care.
Nice review! You did mention the Dewalt 15ah, I'm considering them if they fit but I'm not sure if this would affect the buoyancy, any ideas? Is yours neutrally buoyant without adding any weights inside? Regards
Good question! I don't know for sure, but I would think weight wise, you would be fine with the 15ah batteries. Even with a compass, dive computer, two GoPros, two aluminum mounts, and two lights mounted to my scooter, I still have a considerable amount of pellet weight and both stainless steel weight plates loaded in the nosecone, and that's in freshwater. I often have something additional hooked to my scooter when I'm on a "special" dive, and even when my scooter is heavy or weighted funny, it still travels well, so my thoughts are the 15ah batteries wouldn't negatively affect anything. Thanks for watching, and dive safe!
@@missionscuba Thank you for your reply, that helps to know. 👌🏼🙂 Safe diving.
😅
Awesome viz
Hey brother, I’m a tech diver in Utah. I’d love to come down and do this dive with you. ???
Its been a while from my last dive, however it seems that you spent more time below 100 feet and this would require a significant amount of decompression 170+-is very deep without mixed air. I have done some bounce dives in black canyou but only to 130. One summer I dove every day helped lay the anchors and cables for the Callville Bay Marina 1966.
Hi Fred. Without question, this type of diving should ONLY be performed by someone with a technical diver rating, and then to expand on that even further, only by someone with technical training AND years of technical diving experience in this environment. Regarding the decompression obligation, here is the runtime I planned this dive with. Note that the decompression time was not even touching the 50% decompression gas I was carrying. This is deco on straight air. The number in parenthesis is the dive runtime. Dec to 150ft (3) Air Level @ 150ft 5:40 (9) Air Dec to 175ft (9) Air Level @ 175ft 1:27 (11) Air Asc to 100ft (14) Air Level @ 100ft 15:00 (29) Asc to 50ft (31) Air Stop at 50ft 0:48 (32) Air Stop at 40ft 2:00 (34) Air Stop at 30ft 5:00 (39) Air Stop at 20ft 26:00 (65) Surface (66) Thanks for watching! Depending on someone’s biology, and resistance N2narcosis is very manageable. Trimix isn’t always needed. Sure it’s preferred at 140-170ish, but it’s not a hard fast rule. It’s all about depth and time. Helium is mega expensive these dayz.
When you show yourself under way with the scooter are you on speed 4 as well? Thx! Great review!
Yes sir. Speed 4 in those videos. There's a possibility it was 3, but I'm usually cruising at 4, so it would not have been any higher than that. Thanks for watching! Dive safe.
The danger sign is funny. While I agree that visibility sucks. I did my sidemount cert in 2-3’ vis here in Texas last year. I noticed you’ve got your SPG on the top side of your first stage. Everybody I dive with has the facing aft along the tank. Can you tell me a bit about why you chose this setup for yourself? Cool video.
Hi Caleb. I have my SPG facing forward for two reasons. 1) That's where the guys that I originally started side mount diving with had theirs mounted, and 2) I can see my pressure without having to use my hands. It's funny, or not so funny I guess, that now I'm questioning whether or not I need them dangling out in front of me that way I do. When I was back mount diving, which I did for more than 10 years, my deco bottles always had the SPG plumbed to the aft, and then bungeed so they were wrapped around the 1st stage and then faced forward so they were readable the same way my SPGs are now, but they weren't sticking out the way mine are now. I think I'll switch one of my tanks for my next dive and see how I like it. My thought is although it would be more streamlined and "proper" the way you're describing it, that might degrade my efficiency a bit, so I may stick with what I have. Or not! I'm going to mess around with it for sure. Thanks for watching and for the great tip! Dive safe.
@@missionscuba cool man. I’m sure it’s like everything else. 10 years lots of changes occur in this sport. I am still jealous of that water. I wish I had something better locally. I will say though the 2-3’ vis I have really helps you hone your compass, buoyancy, and buddy skills.
You're always welcome in Vegas. Look me up if you ever plan to be in the area. The water here is the clearest when it's coldest, which would be January through April. By mid summer it gets much murkier as the water gets into the high 70s and 80s, but it's always pretty good if we're diving out where there is the most "current". Dive safe.
Can you please tell me witsch Kinder of ram mount does you have youse to attach eveything Thanks
Hello! Good question. I added the parts I use to the video description. I use a combination of most of these items, but once you take a look at them, you'll see how they generally work. Thanks for watching and dive safe.
Does the scooter give you much interference?
Hello! I intentionally placed my compass as far from the motor as I could, and I have not noticed any compass interference. Thanks for watching and dive safe!
Pretty cool to see those wrecks in which I hope no one died. I am curious on the backstory; Did they all go down together in a storm, or just separate incidents?
The Blue Moon has always been in this area and sunk due to an engine fire. The other wrecks were carried in by what we call "The currents". Dive safe!
were is the B29
It’s located in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead.
B 29 ?
The B-29 is diveable by permit only, and it's been more than 10 years since I've been on that wreck. I don't know if I will ever be back to dive it again. We'll see who is awarded the guide license next. Thanks for watching and dive safe!
