How a Letter From Vietnam Changed My Mom Forever - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 06
A half century ago during Christmas time a young marine in Vietnam wrote to my mom. This complete stranger asked for her help in making Christmas a little brighter and less lonely for his company of marines. What happened next will make you believe in the goodness of the human heart. The acts of kindness that followed from that simple letter have rippled out across five decades like a beacon of light in the terrible darkness many of us feel. We hope you enjoy this story.
In this divided nation - it's important to remember the power of asking for help when you need it and the lasting effect of small acts of kindness.

My Mom Reacts to Kamala's Loss - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 05
Просмотров 15 тыс.Месяц назад
So... the bad thing happened... Donald Trump won and Kamala Harris lost the Presidential election. How did this happen? WHY did this happen? Will and Mom examine those questions and look to history for some possible explanations; most notably the failed Presidential Campaign of Hubert Humphrey. And then they explore how we process the fact that millions of our fellow Americans voted for an obvi...
My Boomer Mom Explains Why Trump MUST Lose - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 04
Просмотров 18 тыс.2 месяца назад
My formerly conservative boomer mom explains why Donald Trump MUST lose this election - and Kamala Harris MUST win. Trump is using the same fear tactics that were used by people like Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s - warning about "the enemy from within" in order to divide Americans and gain power. But who is the REAL "enemy from within"? Mom implores conservatives to put their country before part...
What the 1950s Were Really Like - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 03
Просмотров 126 тыс.2 месяца назад
My mom recalls her memories of the 1950s - a complicated era filled with contradictions. It was a time of immense American prosperity in the wake of worldwide devastation following World War 2. It was a time when the government invested in the American people... well SOME of the people. Because the 1950s was also a time with a regimented social and economic hierarchy - particularly when it came...
How Fear & Bigotry Is Used To Benefit the Privileged Class - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 02

Will and Mom discuss how the far-right stoked the fear of a communist takeover of America in the 1950s and 1960s to support their largely unpopular agenda of economic and imperialist policies designed to benefit the ultra-rich and large corporations. Stoking fear of "the enemy from within" to benefit the wealthy... hmmm, that sounds familiar for some reason... Will and Mom also discuss how both...
Why My Mom Left the Right - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 01

In the debut episode of Talking Politics With Mom - Some More News Director, Will Gordh (a progressive millennial) talks to his mom (a formerly conservative boomer) about what drew her to right-wing ideology when she was younger, and why she ultimately decided to abandon that philosophy - which includes a level of personal and intellectual commitment that is truly rare. Spoiler Alert: She took ...
I absolutely agree with much of what you say. BUT: everything you have just enumerated as why you hated communism: they burn books, they won't let you say or believe what you want to believe, etc., that is all the stuff the Catholics did and do. So how could you be a Catholic? I was born in Germany in 1935 into a Catholic family, and I think I hated catholicism as soon as I came out of the womb. I felt I was suppressed and threatened by a bunch of lies. I have been wondering, as smart and as thoughtful as you are, how you could ever have believed in the Catholic propaganda. Meanwhile I have learned about Buddhism, and if I had to put a label on it, I would call myself a Buddhist--but not as a religion, Buddhism is science--its principles can be experienced and investigated. Buddhism introduced me to the concept of compassion--never heard about it in the Catholic church. Then I got mixed up with a group of Christian progressives and ran across the line attributed to Jesus, words he allegedly said while being nailed to the cross: "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." While I find it very unlikely that somebody actually heard Jesus say that while these crucifixions were going on, but whoever thought up this line had it right. I guess I like the idea that the Jesus that I like would have said that. In the meantime, we've learned about quantum physics, and Gabor Maté has informed us about childhood trauma and how it directs our behavior. If we all could just live by that one line, attributed to Jesus, this would be a different world. If our religious institutions were truly interested in promoting/saving lives, they would be teaching economy in Bible School instead of the Bible, they would be teaching children how they are getting screwed by the rich and powerful--including the churches. I met my husband in 1955, he was a GI, and he finished his engineering degree on the GI Bill. Until I heard your podcast, I had no idea that black GIs did not get the same benefits. I'm no saint, but you don't need to be a saint to understand that there is something wrong with treating people so unjustly because of the color of their skin. They are asked to make the same sacrifice but are not granted the same benefits? I also learned a few years ago about the Tuskegee Airmen, who had to give up their seats to German prisoners of war. Could we have a Geneva Convention for humanity? Yes, I should have paid more attention. My father was born in the 19th century; he was against wars, against Hitler, he never joined the Nazi party and got away with it, because they needed him to keep the trains running. He thought I was going to the land of liberty when I left for America in 1956. Thank you Mom and Will; thank you for telling the truth.
Thank you for sharing. ❤
Thank you both for the episode. Yes, those were turbulent times. I was at that age and in Vietnam. We, folks now in their 70’s, are the elderly generation but it seems the majority of those folks, I may be wrong, haven’t learned goodness, compassion and most of all love for all humanity from those turbulent times.
Why did I use the fake return address? Knew it was going to be intercepted?
This woman is brilliant ❤
The people have spoken. Do you think you and your mom will stop whining soon.
This video made me remember how much I appreciate having 2 Republican parents and a beautiful mom who doesn’t wear her hair like a lesbian.
Thank you for this story,I,ll try to be brief,I'm in tears.my beautiful mum was involved in the Vietnamese war in Australia in that time with the red cross.she sent Xmas pudding to soldiers serving there. One day around 70,71,I was home sick from school with mum,I answered a knock at the door,a soldier in uniform with kit bag asked to see my mum.he had caught a train to Innisfail from Cairns where he landed from nam.he was on route to townsville.garrison city.he was so moved by my mum,s love he wanted to meet her.he was an officer and his name was bill, the same as me.his last name was the same also.i never saw him again, your story was very moving to me,my mum died in 83.my dad was involved with the army then also. He was a para in the red beret,1st Australia para.in the Vietnam war he trained the national service men who did not do overseas deployment.i was raised by them in his army.he was very strict.there was a lot of the same treatment here,my older brother who served in that conflict and his mates were spat on when they returned.all those who were there, even the families at home suffered for years from that event in history.i have never tried to find bill but maybe it,s time to.thank you again.❤❤❤
A “veiled attack on kids”? Lady, puberty blockers that cause chemical castration, sterilisation, and sexual nullification are an unveiled attack on kids. Get a biology book. Read up on John Monday, pray for the peace of the Reimer family. The person who doesn’t understand the issue is YOU.
What a great story Adrienne! So glad you reconnected and got the pictures again! I hope the good can outweigh the bad but at this point idk if it’s possible a lot of ppl are so indifferent and hasty , especially towards the senior citizens or anyone who would require a little extra time and attention, and there are so many unruly students, they don’t want anyone to tell them what to do , they are rude, disruptive and disrespectful and they don’t care, idk know how we can reach them. They r learning from TikTok and it’s not facts , and they don’t care and now with the inauguration in January of this hateful , unkind , unpresidential person our leader makes fun of ppl with disabilities, he makes fun of ppl who are different, he doesn’t care what he says or does and a majority of our citizens are okay with that. I feel heavy in the heart for my children and grandchildren and anyone else left behind
Strange it was a few of my democrat friends that shunned me because of my vote and my choice not to get the Covid vaccine. I’ve been hearing Hollywood and democrats and even the current President call me“uneducated, cultish, nazi, garbage”. Your message is off by a million miles.
Great eye opening presentation. Now how does the average white american think of the GI bill and how blacks where left out of it. Do whites deny that GI Bill helped them?
Afghanistan Fiasco, Ukraine, The Middle East… all under Uncle Joe… and Kam-Kam Harris could not disavow any of it. No Wonder She Lost.
I think narcissism is the main problem.
Will has no chance in any real debate so he abuses his mother.
"The 50's where built on the backs of women." That is perfectly worded and so true.
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story. It's so relevant in the times we're living in. This prompted me to pull a book from my shelf that I had read in my Buddhist teacher training class. by a contemporary of Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist Nun Sister Chan Cong, writes in her Vietnam War memoir Learning True Love: Practicing Peace in a Time of War about her work with the School of Youth and Social Service in Rural Vietnam during the war. She led a 1,0000-member peace group, that helped the everyday people in the rural communities of Vietnam get food, and medical relief during the Vietnam war. Totally with a read.
Of course the 1950s loom large in the consciousness of many Americans. It was a period of unparalleled aspiration for ordinary Americans. Never before and since the mid-seventies, did Americans have access to a better materialistic life. During the 50s economic inequality was shrinking. Ever since Nixon went to China the divide between the rich and everyone else has grown exponentially and the opportunities that boomers enjoyed no longer exist.
Everything was subsidized by the US government, mostly whites.
Why is no one broaching the subject that she really won, and saying it is all her fault? I'm sure no one wants to look like Trump in 2020 denying he lost. But I think we will find plenty of cheating by Trump and Musk.
I love your mom.
I love history and how you connect the 1950's and 1960's to today is so interesting and uplifting to me. I have watched all your videos this far. Keep them coming.
You're so lucky to have your mom ❤
The like button is not working for some reason !
Made my 🎄 Christmas. Thanks.
You guys represent the wisdom and humanism that I dearly miss in current politics. Thank you for reminding us that there were at all times people with empathy and courage. Merry christmas!
Why would Kamala call Joe up & tell him she's gonna "kick his ass?" You just told us Joe was all virtue!
So glad you’re back! What a wonderful story - thank you for sharing.🎁
Thank you for sharing this story. It has made my Christmas!
What a beautiful recounting of such a sweet act of kindness. Thank you so much for sharing it with the world! It made my day, and will do the same for many others. Happy Christmas to both of you!
Born in early '51& so do relate to ringing erratic emote of notorious 🎅nostalgia, not knocking blooming benefits of apparent carefree childhood
It'd be interesting to learn what the ratio is of families that have these kind of conversations to those that never do.
Thank you for sharing this story at a time when many of us have lost our families over political differences.
Yes. We have this common humanity though it is often hard to reach down and find it. I'm going to keep trying.
Tom Hanks as the general and Meryl Streep playing Mom?
A plan!
Beautiful story. Thank you both and happy holidays!
bravo/ for putting out this podcast/ 🙏
Only thing good about the 50’s were the cars and furniture.
Apparently we're going back! Didn't finish yet but so far didn't hear about the discrimiation against gay people that was in the 50s they want to go back too as well!
Thank you for an honest look at the forces that shaped you and how you evolved.
Fabulous pod cast. Thank you Adrienne for your story. It is better to hear words of commonality and humanity, rather than Trumpling down with insanity.
tragic election outcome/ condolences/
I appreciate you both! These conversations are so needed right now. Thank you.
I also grew up in a very conservative home. I appreciate your story and that you are sharing it. Thank you!!!
I was 14 and Canadian in 1967. That was had zero impact on my life in terms of knowing much about the war in Viet Nam or any personal connection. One year later my father was elected to server in our federal parliament and we moved across the country to our nation's capital. That's when I learned so much beyond the classrooms of my first year in highschool. Your story brought back so many memories of that time and, conflicting emotions, because I was not mature enough at that time to be able to separate the warriors from the was. Thank you for re-connecting me with one of the reasons listen to the voice of kindness first.
What a beautiful story. This could be a movie. How crazy that’s he’s atill alive and how amazing that he got to update his comrades ❤️
I was in 10th grade in 1967 - I remember all too well the protests on college campuses and how horribly our vets were treated when they came home. Your story is something I will never forget and it brought me to tears. Thank you so much for touching me so deeply this quiet Sunday morning. This remembrance of how powerful kindness is will sustain me through the next four years. Thank you!
Thank you for a wonderful story! ❤ Love to listen to you both! Happy holidays & New Year!🎉 From a viewer in Norway. ❄️❄️
I think one of the hidden issues in politics is whether the politics we have is just what happens to be fashionable and a status marker in the moment, or whether politics is something that is the result of having philosophical principles, values and convictions that a person has thought out and arrived at for themselves. Your mother definitely falls into the latter camp, but I think that a lot of people only belong to whatever camp seems to be successful and popular, or popular with the intellectual and cultural elites. What would be advantageous for advancing themselves in their careers and climbing the success ladder.
