    I’ve never wanted to take a cruise; any kind of cruise. I got roped into taking a Chattanooga to Nashville, via Alabama/Kentucky, “9 days, 8 night” because someone else had to drop out. First off, the first day of 9 is actually in the hotel the day before the cruise starts. Second, a lock closed on the river, and we now have to take a bus from Chattanooga to Florence AL to get on the boat. At that location, we get to stay docked for two nights, plus the normally scheduled two nights in Nashville, which brings the total number of nights the ship isn’t moving to 5 out 8. Never again, no thank you.

    Having been on several Viking cruises and two Tauck, my opinion is that Tauck is more expensive up front, but way superior. Also, there is no extra charge for beer, wine, spirits in the main lounge area. We were given 20E for lunch in town one day. They have E-bikes for some excursions and two levels (one a bit slower) for walking tours. Also, you can go to dinner at your leisure and not have to sit with others, if that's what you want. When you first arrive, you are put up in a luxury hotel with a cocktail party and a superb dinner. Many are still in travel clothes-no problem. Once you have traveled with Tauck, they have a perk called, "A gift of time." That simply means that you fly in a day earlier and they give you another night in that luxury hotel. Once each cruise they take you to a palace or castle for a cocktail party and a wonderful dinner. Men need a jacket for that night. If you book your air travel through Tauck, you don't pay when you book, but when you pay for the whole trip. Also, the Tauck insurance covers your airfare. It is true that you have to book very early. I have had to book a year early to secure my next trip.

    This was again so interesting!! A little insert from a German car-girl: WHEN you really wanna be a "Porsche-Girl", pleaaase learn how to correctly pronounce the name. @@askarealtravelexpert ...it is PorschE. We Germans pronounce a vocal always the same way, no matter if it's at the beginning, in the middle or in the end of a word. As I said, it sounds like the "E" in Elk! :D By the way, all "e" in the name "Mercedes Benz" are pronounced like the Elk-"E" as well, all the very same way. Americans tend to pronounce like "mörcidis". ;) ;) But I digress... 😘👋

    On this tour, do you have to handle your own luggage, or does Cosmo transfer it from the train to the hotel and back again? Also, if you use a rollator walker, is there room on the train to park it. Will the train staff assist you in getting on and off the train? Do the hotels have elevators? I can walk a mile, but it can take me 45 minutes or so. It depends on the temperatures and if my arthritis is acting up or not. Temperatures in the mid 80s are not bad. When they get in the 90s or over 100, that's hot.

    • @askarealtravelexpert
      @askarealtravelexpert День назад

      Here is Kathy's reply: "You are allowed one checked bag and Cosmos provides portage between train and hotels. You can have a tote or backpack with you on the train. Unfortunately, if you use a walker, I would not recommend this tour for you. There is simply too much walking and a lot of it is up hill. Combined with the elevation at several stops, I think it would be very difficult for you. I did not witness the train staff assisting anyone."

    Just saw this two years after the fact. There's another useful comparison number in addition to the passenger to crew ratio. That number I call the space ratio. It probably has a formal name. It's the Gross Tonnage divided by the number of passengers. One of the Royal Carib mega ships has a space ratio of 33 tons per passenger. One of the Seabourn ships is 67 tons per passenger. So the Seabourn has nearly twice the space per passenger of a mega ship. They feel it too!

    Our last two Uniworld ships in France and on the Rhine had max 124 people. Viking dining rooms were reported to be excessively noisy by friends who like us having some hearing issues. Maybe it's the # of diners or how the rooms are built to reduce ambient noise but it's important to us.

    • @askarealtravelexpert
      @askarealtravelexpert Месяц назад

      Oh man , we hear you about the noise factor in some dining rooms. (It's an any restaurant peeve of mine). Not sure if its a Viking structural thing or the number of passenger but 60 plus more folks in a dining room will definitely make a difference.

  • @craigborgardt6396
    @craigborgardt6396 Месяц назад

    We've done Uniworld Europe twice and continue because of all-inclusivity even though we are not big alcohol consumers. Uniworld offers significant incentives to return to sail with them and along with their top-notch service, food and BOTH free and optional shore excursions. We've only done one where we paid extra and even that one was not exorbitant. I'd perhaps like to try Ama once but that could be difficult price-wise. Friends who've sailed with Viking complained about the very noisy dining rooms....Uniworld has their DR's well insulated and the sound is not at all a bother and I have bad ears where such is noticeable. Our one and only dismay with Uniworld was that we could not visit the Versailles Palace on our Paris to Normandy cruise. They only had so many tickets and could not obtain more. We figured out quickly how to never allow that to happen: At the first ship's meeting, sit in the back near the exit and be the first in line at the service desk to arrange any trips that are optional, desirable and popular. Food choices dropped just a TAD between 2018 and post-COVID 2023 but not enough to warrant changing ships. We will see on our upcoming trip to Bordeaux whether it's back up to previous standards....if not, it may be the reason we try Ama next year.

    Sure is hard to call Regent an Ultra-luxury when they encourage kids. We loved Regent until this year and we were surrounded by Children. They tout the included airfare but since Covid, they don't give you a good choice for airfare. They took us west when going east and then past our state going west. Twenty-one hours to get home when it should have been 14. You can change the airfare but they charge more to do so. How can it be luxury when they book two stops? It is a beautiful cruise line and the children and bad airfare booking has changed it.

    • @askarealtravelexpert
      @askarealtravelexpert Месяц назад

      Negotiated air contracts have been getting worse since the in recent years so I guess it comes down to keeping the overall price point of a cruise within range at the sacrifice of quality air not a great choice in our opinion. Interesting comment with regard to kids what time of year did you sail exactly? Summer and holiday season are bound to attract more kids as more and more families want the multi generational experience. The luxury cruise lines are now looking to fill that need.
