    Gee, maybe you could show us a couple of the show-stoppers you have designed, or share some actual insights into comparative architectural styles, the psychology of design or it's history, all weaved together with a stunning breadth of knowledge and presented in such a way to make it not only interesting but assessable to a lay audience - You know, the kind of stuff that Dami does so effortlessly and charmingly, with the occasional dash of self-consciously corny humor (about the only thing she struggles with 🙂). Oh, and the camera loves her as much as her subscribers do. Pretty hard to compete with I suppose...

  • @S0ulinth3machin3

    This video reinforced my impression that the architecture world is an insane nest of catfighting. It's not really the architects' fault, at least not completely. They all have similar skill sets. In school, they all learn how to do the same stuff. Then, when they get out, they're constrained by construction methods. I built one house and it was enough for me. The contractors don't want to try anything new because it might take more time and therefore will be unprofitable. So the contractors do the same stuff over and over and the architects are obliged to do the same. The result is: the only way they can differentiate from each other is by nitpicking. Same thing has happened to photography, ever since it became digital. When analyzing each other's work, boy can they become b*tchy.

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793 9 месяцев назад

      Hey Soul, appreciate the comment. If commenting on the fundamental roles of an architect is nitpicking then I need a clarification of your definition. "the only way they can differentiate from each other is nitpicking", no, we differentiate from each other through what we do, like any other profession! For architects, it means drawings, research, details, concepts, circulation, narratives, presentations, ethos, materials, construction methods, etc. Constructive feedback drives improvement. I commented on Dami as an architect through examples of her drawing, visualization, and concepts that make up the majority of her video. What's your point on contractors and profits? It's the architect's job to consider profits and feasibility, like any other profession.

      @@kelvindoesarchitecture6793 when I built my house it was steel framed. Steel framing is common in commercial construction, but not residential. The subcontractors all complained. I chose steel because it's straighter, it doesn't warp, it doesn't settle, it doesn't make noise (because of contraction/expansion due to temperature), it doesn't burn. It was built next to a brush filled ravine in southern California, huge fire danger. The steel was more expensive, of course. All the subcontractors complained about it. They were used to dealing with wood frames. Again, steel isn't that outside the box, it's what they use in high rises. I understand that buildings all have a bottom line which has to be adhered to. It just didn't fit my personal outlook. I ended up getting into sculpture. There's less of a bottom line in sculpture. They're smaller, there's no expectation of financial return. BTW, the art world can be just as nitpicky. I haven't experienced it personally, but it's why I've never bothered to have a show. Will do it someday, but only with stuff that's so out of the box that there won't be any nits to pick. BTW, I understand why there is criticism in any genre. It's part of the profession. If I came off as negative about it, it's probably because I am negative about it and it's a personal failing when I understand that criticism comes with the territory.

    Hi I'm nico, this is my first year of studying architecture and enginering, I have been following your projects for a couple of years. After watching this video the first thing that pops to mind in the theme of Home Space would be how you can apply intelligent storing in these appartement-units, usually council housings are small in size, so optimizing ways to keep our objects organized is important to make the room feel bigger than it actually is. Although you probably already know him, i would reccomend you have a look at Gary Chang's work in his "Nano House" where he faces challenges of compact living, or also in his "Suitcase house", these could also be of use as references. On another note, I think everyone studying architecture knows how big of a responsability we will hold in the future in making self-sustainable and also community-orientated spaces, even though the needs of today might not be the same as a population's needs centuries ago, the role this profession in guiding it towards resolving these needs remans throughout time. With that being said you could empthasize even further on how these units have enviromental beneficial aspects (i would recomend you check out "arcorn land labs", which develop self-built sustainable sistems under the idea of solarpunk) and a role in making the neighborhood of Catford more self-suistaned oriented (maybe by thinking about how these built-units can be recycled once the person has stoped living in them, to think about their "afterlife", showing that you had a thought about the further future). Finally i think you had great ideas that i would develop even further, like the kiosk of imagination or how the wall-composition in the units can be custmized to one's liking by residents, best of luck in this project! Ps: you might want to think about how shared space in these buildings are designed and present them as equally important as the housing-units.

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793 9 месяцев назад

      Hi Nico, thank you so much for your comment, i really appreciate it! Just looked at Gary Changs suitcase house, it's so luxurious which was unexpected to me lol. Acorn Labs is a cool channel, small scale sustainable living which can definitely feed into parts of my strategies whether it will be for one room or for the building's own farm or rain gathering system. Recycling of these self-built units is going to be big, absolutely agree with you. I'm looking at construction methods that are dissassembly-friendly at the moment such as this bad boy (twitter.com/SustainableTall/status/1650764852787548163), feel free to give me suggestions! And yeah customization is big, working on designing some joineries(how exactly are things connected together without permanent joints), great point. Shared spaces - for sure! Right now i'm starting to design the first floor which will include a lot of interactive elements for the public, and maybe use the roof for the renters as a hangout - most council housing in the uk has no roof terrance so that could potentially be a good response. The ground floor will probably be something like Assembly House 150, a pretty cool reference of a workshop+exhibition space. Such a well considered feedback, thank you so very much!! PS. I will design a room specifically to address your feedback :)

      @@kelvindoesarchitecture6793 Sorry for answering so late, i just had my first exam today so i have been studying all week. Indeed Gary Chang's houses have that feeling to them, when in fact being quite simple. The trick is having big free spaces, as he does really well in "domestic transformer", the space is extremely configurable, up to 21 different combinations throughout the day, adding even further flexibility while keeping a spacious central area. You are right to think about how sustainability can be applied to the building as a whole, maybe you might want to have a look at old architecture-tech like the ancient persian Windcatchers (Badguir). About joineries, my initial thought was to study how intelligent assembly and disasembly of pavilions are curently done. Since they are only temporary structures, architects most definitely already had a thought about that, but you might know more about that than I do. Otherwise you should get inspired by the way "Sashimono" is applied to japanese furniture and see how this type of thinking and development can be applied to a larger scale. I didn't know about Assembly House 150, it looks like a good idea to be implemented in this project. Unfortunately the only shared-space i can think of at the moment is roman insulae since the exam was on architecture history haha btw i am flatered about the feedback-adressed room and curious to what the end-project will look like, keep us updated!

    Beautiful concept, definitely do more or these! It’s a great way to unify education. Accessibility wise, who can experience your kiosk, have you considered disabilities. Structurally for you retro fit building, how will it sound. What acoustic and ritual process does that space already provide and how can you design with that in mind. How do you change or make the most of your communal spaces within the building. Fire safe stair wells. Similarly for the retro fitting; what’s your second purpose. If you’re building internal renovation what other community possibilities are there. Can you have kinetic doors. How would you reuse someone’s “optional living design” Reply One Architect Greg Keeffe - created a whole Extention to his own personal home with reused materials, from skips and waste around the area. Using sheep’s wool for insulation. He currently lives in a Net zero home he also constructed sustainably. And has many RIBA Awards. One Example a project in Manchester where by he acquired numerous storm damaged timber from France. A difficult thing with self building is who is your mediator, who limits creative expression. Have you created a new role for the client. Does this not limit the responsibilities of chartered professionals such as structural engineers, project managers and architects. How do you relocate and manage services. What are their limits. How large is your “ikea” catalogue. Does it negate the professional relationship of the client and the “design team” It would be very difficult to create a professional multidisciplinary agreement. Why are you limiting your reuse of materials to the local area. A challenge for you, could have your spaces be an urban quiet room. How much noise can you negate from the area. How would this change the space. Read- Programs and manifestoes on 20th -century architecture, Ulrich Conrads pg 46 (First year student from QUB) Just some ideas and questions 🙈.

      Thank you very much! Definitely looking to keep this up especially after reading highly informative responses like yours! I have indeed not thought about disabilities for the kiosk, great point - will be sure keep that in mind for my next design. Acoustics could play a big part, something i've almost forgotten. It will be a big focus when i begin to design the stages of temporary housing for people constructing their units, as in where will people live when they are constructing their "more permanent" flats and also how do tenants that have already moved in deal with the noise pollution of a neighbor's house getting build! Maybe part of it will be resolved through construction methods as well, low noise construction. Greg Keeffe seems like a great proof that building recycling is feasible, thank you for sharing! Can't seem to find too much on his actual house, please share if you have more info of any websites! In terms of services, im still looking for a detail design report for this building, hopefully it will help with knowing what's already in place. My "ikea" catalogue will probably develop with each design, i will probably have a few very detailed components catalogued that can be reused throughout the building, for example no mortar brick wall construction techniques like this one (twitter.com/SustainableTall/status/1650764852787548163) which i will be doing a personal reinterpretation on. And the idea right now is that each room will have a simplified counterpart that teaches how it was constructed, similar to Assembly House 150's exhbition "rooms/mini structures" along with construction manuals. Design team. Great point, have given this more thought lately and had a discussion with my tutors last week. There will be a design team - architect, carpenter etc. on site as mediators and mentors to ensure safety and to maximaze the client/self-builder's design and construction freedom in terms of pushing the boundaries of what they can acheive. Not exactly sure on the meaning of professional multidisciplinary agreement and urban quiet room, as in a contract between the professionals involved and a quiet building? Also what is pg 46 about if you mind summarizing :) Thank you for your amazing feedback, so many incredible ideas!! PS. will design a room(s) catered to your reponse, construction period temporary homes, home for the disables etc. Best of luck in First Year!

If we don't get more real men like yourself contributing to the architecture of the world, we are all going to be hauling rocks up mountains for people like Dami who can't themselves come prepared to climb said mountain to do a simple survey. It will be like that Running Up That Hill song but with really heavy rocks and they'll probably ration the water supply so you'll be thirsty the whole time. Dami is everything that is wrong with architecture media, condensed into a single, insufferable package. Most of what she says in her vids is outright wrong and in whole is a massive negative to the profession. The public is confused enough as it is, we don't need to confuse them further. Of course you're right it's all about clickbait and entertainment, so it has been for a long time with social media photos and renders promoting superficial aesthetics over quality architectural design and spatial experiences. If enough people think it looks cool and like it, it must be good of course! The biggest damage she makes and in particular such ridiculous comparisons as the AI video, is completely misrepresenting the image of what an architect even does, what architecture itself is about, and what is important about architectural design, what quality design even is. Where is the context? Who is the client? What is the budget? What is the site? What's the spatial or tectonic concept? Of course the AI fails in this, it's not designed to produce architecture just a mashup of floorplan images without any conception of what's good, but her and her team of "architects" fail even harder for not even trying, the entire exercise is inconceivably dumb. Neither of it is architecture, they're just a steaming pile of shit with an architecture label tagged on. There could be an intelligent conversation about the future role of AI in architecture, but certainly asinine videos like Dami's are not it. Good on you for seeing through the bs and speaking out about it, we need more people to stand up to it.

  • @harrybuttery2447
    @harrybuttery2447 11 месяцев назад

    My problem with her video was that she was comparing different things to each other deliberately to get a result. Her floorpan is a floorplan, it's not meant to be pretty it's meant to tell you what the layout is whereas the AI floorplan was meant to be pretty but also fails as a floor plan. I did not notice that her floorpan had no doors though...

    I don't know if this is too much to ask, but could you possibly look over my portfolio after I have fully completed it...maybe advise me on how to touch it up? Your portfolio is probably the best I have seen for uni entries so far ngl !!

      @@kelvindoesarchitecture6793 Thats okay thx, I have another question - On your map of las vegas slides how did you photoshop your drawings so precisely. Especially the part where you layered the drawings on two different coloured backgrounds. I am trying to do this as well but it would take me hourssss to erase each individual pixel, so is there like a shortcut?

      her pitiful design just shows that she's all talk no substance when it comes to being an architect

    Linhao Architects.. I am loving those designs. I don't know who in their right mind disparages concrete as a viable building material when implemented properly. Look at @0:54 - The curves on that concrete swooping off into that thick greenery on the right make me think 'IS THIS an AMUESMENT park or just a regular place to eat? That's good looking stuff. @4:58 - Same thing. That is cool and roller coaster station-esque. Keep liking and finding weird ::bleep::. @4:10 - Don't apologize. Just flow it out. Who cares? Your attitude is deserved, you have rights. Say things and have opinions. I love this video.

    Can I ask how did you submit your physical portfolio? For example, do you have to print out your digital sketches and drawings?
