The "Malebi" musical ensemble, formed and based on the island of Crete, holds at its heart the musical tradition of Asia Minor. By creatively and innovatively engaging with this tradition, the ensemble aims to preserve, revive and further develop the unique musical and vocal heritage which developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries following the complex intermingling of eastern and western cultures in Greece and Turkey.
The ensemble harmoniously combines the oriental sound of traditional instruments such as the ‘kanun’, the ‘oud’ and the violin, and the occidental sound of the modern guitar. Just like the luscious Middle Eastern mastic and rose water dessert from which the ensemble draws its name, Malebi invites its audience into the world of ‘Smyrneika’, ‘Polítika’, ‘Murmurika’ and other contemporaneous unprovenanced, but relevant, melodies and songs.
