Flat Twin Therapy
Добавлен 10 дек 2023
Commuting and touring the R1200RT.
My name is Rolf and I live in The Netherlands, near Gouda.
As long as I can remember I've had riding a motorcycle as a passion..I remember my first bicycle had hand brakes and a speedometer. I must have been 8. I'm in love with riding.
Owned a Honda VF750F, Kawasaki ZZR600, BMW R1150R, a R1200GS and now a R1200RT. I love the characteristics of the flat twin boxer engine.
Riding all year, all weather, except when snow or slippery roads are expected. I do not mind rain or freezing temperatures (except the combination).
Every ride feels like a holiday, even when riding in the rain to or back from work.
I'm completely inexperienced in video/audio capturing and editing, but I have a background in photography. That might help.
No goals on number of RUclips subs or frequency of posting a new vid. This channel is meant as a hobby and a passion for riding a motorcycle.

BMW K1600GTL for a day - compare it to a R1200RT
Today my 2018 BMW R1200RT is getting a 60.000km service. This involves replacing the drive shaft, since last year BMW decided to replace the drive shaft for boxer engines every 60.000km... that's a free swap for existing boxer owners.
Because this takes time, I cannot wait at the dealer, so I get a replacement bike. They reserved a GS, but since I owned a GS before the RT, I asked if the GT was available.
Did I like it?

My first experience with exercises on slow cornering the BMW R1200RT. Norbert prepared some beginner exercises, inspired by Quinn Redeker. I never did training like this before, but I've been wanting to do this for quite a while. Thanks Norbert for preparing the training. I learned a lot. I'm definitely going to continue practicing. Way too much fun not to do this. #motorcyclelife #motorcycledr...

BMW R1200RT Motorcycle small trip solo - My first Motovlog ever

This is my first vlog ever. A test actually. My first ride recording and my first video editing... so don't expect a lot. I got myself a DJI Osmo Action 3 action cam for Xmas because I really wanted to capture my rides on my BMW R1200RT (2018). There's a lot of RUclips content on the GS(A), but I feel the RT is missing out... So here's my first. I like the process of capturing and editing, but ...
You did well, that's very hard to do. Norbert is inspiring . I also have the rt, great bikes
What phone mount are you using? Works with large phones?
I use a cradle from AliExpress, wireless charging. Mounts to the original navigation mount. I used it with a Google pixel 6 pro, which is quite big. Really happy with it
I do have a 2015 RT fully eq. Very pleased with it but at motorway over 120-130km it starts to vibrate unpleasent. I wait to next year se what it will be, maybe 1300-1400RT? Automatic?
Vibrate? Wind turbulence? Vibrations is the handle bars? Tyres? That's not how is should be, obviously
@@FlatTwinTherapy It´s from the engine feels trough the saddle and pegs. I think its normal but I don´t like it. Read somewhere it could be from bike to bike.
Hmm. I don't think I recognize it. But a 1300.. I hope they do not make em smaller, like the GS.. I don't like that design. I was surprised the GT felt smaller up front. I like the 'massive' front of the RT.
Have been considering the RT1200 for next bike.
What's your current bike? I've had a VF750F, 28 years ago. A ZZR600 23 years ago, a R1150R 20 years ago and a R1200GS 2y ago. Always liked a full fairing touring bike. Impressed with its capabilities
Currently on a 2021 Ducati Hypermotard 959. Had a ‘82 CB900 and a ‘99 ZX9.
Never rode a 6 cylinder bike. I must admit on wind up the engine sounded like an F16 fighter jet! Seriously cool. 👍🏻
Agreed. That sounded great AND was fun. But in NL... Our speed limit is 100... We might get 130 on some spots, if the government allows.. I feel this bike is only fun of you live in Germany... Oh. Wait ;) But even then. The Bike feels less agile. My RT felt a meter shorter and small, when I rode back home. Imagine that
@@FlatTwinTherapy you should get it over 6k RPM, the power curve hits around there
I can imagine you will get a kick in the back :) would be awesome.
How tall is Norbert?
If I drove like that on my former Honda NC750X, I would tear off the oil pan. Fortunately, I got rid of the Honda. And that bike looked like an enduro.
That sounds like an expensive incident... Hope it wasn't. It is a concern I have obviously... How high can the curb be...
@@FlatTwinTherapy Fortunately, it didn't happen, but I scratched the oil pan a couple of times while driving through the speed bump, but it didn't break. And I also already have a 2018 BMW R1200RT.
Clear! Luckily only scratches then, but really not ideal. The RT isn't really the bike for playing around with obstacles, but it can handle a lot..
Very nice! Can't wait for the next one. I am practicing figure 8's right now.
Yes, figure 8s are also very good to practice. What bike are you on? Did you see my other vid on exercises?
@@FlatTwinTherapy Right now I have a 2023 BMW 1250 GSA and just ordered a 2024 BMW 1250 RT which I have never even ridden one yet but sat on a few. If you click on my name here, you can see a picture of my GSA. I have no videos though.
You will love the RT. I had a 1200GS. The sitting position is different, but I feel the bike is more agile. When do you get it?
This type of training is really excellent for city driving and filtering between lanes. I use cones whenever I get a new bike to prepare me for slow riding through traffic and the exercises here are excellent. I haven’t moved the cones off line the way you did. Good idea, I’ll do that. Thanks for taking time to share the learning experience.
You made life really difficult with the cones. Why not go a bit wider at the beginning? Was part of the exercise to go close to the cones?
No. Agreed, should have taken it wider. It also means you need to turn more aggressive, which is to be learned. Learning in progress. Thanks
Simple but brilliant bike exercises. I enjoyed that, it’s motivated me to get some cones and do some manoeuvring with the boys. 👍🏼
Thanks Steve! You can get cones, or use some tennis balls, which you cut in half. I did the latter. Bought 25 tennis balls for 16 eur incl shipping at oudetennisballen.com (2nd hand). During the excercises with the cones, I noticed I kept getting distracted by the cones , because I thought when I would ride over them, I would slide sideways and thus would fall. In reality this did not happen, but I did notice me being anxious about that, limiting my confidence and thus also limiting the result. The sliced tennis balls slide less. Hence feels better to me. Plus cheaper.
@@FlatTwinTherapy Top Tip Rolf, thanks. Tennis balls it is….and they are easier to transport on the bike to my nearest practice area😀👍🏼
great video
Thanks!
Pure sound and a nice ride in a green environment at the coast. 🙂
Yes indeed. Great elements for a ride. Thanks for the comment
What a brilliant little ride out for anybody, but especially for anyone visiting the Netherlands for the first time. The link to the route works perfectly. Great job mate.
Thanks Steve!
Thanks for sharing! I’d love to see a short video of how you pack for the day trip. I have one of those coffee contraptions, although I forget what it’s called. We usually use an automatic machine on the kitchen counter. I need to get me one of those little burners. Fresh ground beans every day! 👍🏻☕️😁
Thanks for the tip, Patrick. I haven't had a lot of time lately, so not that many new footage to share. I still love to ride and capture video, so I will pick it up again. I like the idea, so will pick it up :) thanks
I love pure sound videos!
Thank you!
I wish German roads were that quiet. Great video Rolf and thanks for the mention at the end👍🏻
Thanks, Steve. The roads are mainly this quiet because of Sunday morning. Also the island isn't the busiest part of NL. I'm curious how this part will be in summer, because it is a good holiday environment
Thank you for these views. Such narrow roads, I like them. Yes, I could smell the coffee. 😊 I shall start carrying my Aeropress coffeemaker with me for day rides.
Thank you for your feedback. I always enjoy a fresh coffee in a quiet spot :) I've been curious about the Aeropress coffeemaker. How do you get the hot water? Thermos, or do you use a gas burner to cook the water?
@@FlatTwinTherapyYes, I need a small kettle, so that's one more thing to pack. Still, my tiny 0.7 liter camping kettle, Optimus 8R stove, and the aeropress, pack quite small.
Ok. Thanks. Then I see no additional benefit over my percolator. So I'll stick with that :) Thanks for sharing!
Amazing scenery in the Dutch alps.
The Dutch Alps 😎 That sounds great!!
What a great route. I didn’t even see another car until towards the end of the video. The only thing that was missing was a bit of sunshine, but I think that will be with us soon.
Indeed. Temperatures rising. There was barely any traffic. Great spot. Imagine these trees having leaves and blossoms... Will go back some time!
Grey sky ,traffic free roads in a beautiful location with freshly brewed coffee wonderful.
Thanks! Yes I love it like this. No sun is not an issue
Thank you for sharing this video.
You're welcome. Actually: I planned to go to the same area tomorrow. Different back roads, but same area. Looking forward to it. Planning to make a vid out it again. Stay tuned
Nice video i've got the same bike looks like your using myroute app navigation on a telephone mount that fits the cradle?
Correct! I'm using the MyRouteApp on my Android phone in a cheap cradle which supports wireless charging. That is mounted to the default navigation slot. To be honest: a week after I bought the bike, I bought the cradle and after I mounted it, I never took it off again. I can recommend it.
@@FlatTwinTherapy I use the tom tom adapter to the BMW cradle never took it of either the bmw navigator is crap
I love to use my phone: always latest maps and traffic information. Also: I can use whatever app I want. It is a pitty I cannot use the bmw wonder wheel, but I'll manage.
Nice little ride out. Audio sounded good as well 👍🏼
Thank you. Still experimenting with the microphone. That's why this vid didn't include my voice: was too low volume. But we're getting there, I think. Tried talking bit louder which was too much, so I u guess I found the proper voice volume when talking..
Any ride on an RT is a good ride 👍
Yes it is. Enjoying the RT a lot. :) I'll record some of the reasons in the upcoming vids.
Nice video with a great bike! Could you tell me the brand and type of the headset and the crash bar? Safe rides!
Hi Marco! Thanks for the feedback. I'm using the SCHUBERTH SC2 headset for communication. The Schubert C5 headset is completely prepared for communication with that headset. Fitting it is really easy since the speakers are already in the helmet. Very nice quality. I use it every ride for navigating and traffic info. Occasionally I use it to make a call, but really not that often. I'm surprised the caller doesn't notice I'm riding my bike (on the highway). Call quality is really good. Listening a podcast isn't ideal though, for some reason the volume then it's too low (when on highway and with earplugs) but phonecall is not a problem. Also impressed with the battery. You can ride for 8+ hours before need to charge. The crashbars are from wunderlich. Very nice quality as well. I'm contemplating buying the rear guards as well for the cases, but not convinced to spend another 400,- for the yet
@@FlatTwinTherapy Thanks, I consider the Cardo Edge or Freecom 4x and also the Wunderlich front and rear.
There is another brand of crashbars which I thought was beautiful, but they don't deliver to NL (only expensive). Can't recall the brand right now. Will let you know when I think of it
@@FlatTwinTherapyIllium works zal je waarschijnlijk bedoelen
Ja exact! Mooi spul. Wel wat prijzig en volgens mij niet direct in NL te koop. Verschepen is wel weer prijzig
I much agree withe the other suggestion to include BMW R1200Rt in the title, you had some great content but will lack the views you presented it very well.what year is the bike.
Thanks for the feedback. I agree, the title should be more clear and include relevant info. It's the 2018 model.
If it fits...Thou Shall Pass. 😁👍
💪🏻 indeed
Nice video, I use myrouteapp also, good software. You can also use bluetac too for waterproofing the microphone joints
Thanks for the tip! Blu tack, I see. Seems a good alternative!
That ride looked great, it was getting and better the further you went. Helmet mic sounds good (I have to ride with all vents shut, all of the time). Nice editing and some ambient music thrown in for good measure. Take note of the amount of views you get for this video after, say, seven days. Then go back into your creator studio and change the title of the video for something like “BMW R1200RT - Solo ride out” (anything like that) and then see view count after another 7 days. It may miss the wave of views by then but give it a go nevertheless. I know your happy experimenting with vlog set up, editing etc and views are of little importance but have a go with changing title and thumbnail, or at the very least put in 20% as much time into your title and thumbnail as you do making your next video. You may be surprised with the results.
That's really nice advice, Steve! Thanks a lot. Interesting topic. I will do that! Thanks
If those mirrors fit through, the boxes fit through! 👍
I actually think the boxes are 3cm wider. Read this online. I have to measure to be sure. Will do that soon actually, but I don't want to go to these tight spaces that I need to worry about 3cm anyways
Cleaning bikes is an overrated past time anyway 😂
Agreed. And a clean bike doesn't provide good grip on the saddle... When I got it from the dealer it was treated with silicone stuff... Slippery as hell. This is much safer
Can't beat a bit of filthy dirty fun 🤣
Agreed!!
Over 200 views on your first video is a strong start ( and still going)well done. I think you were right, judging by some of the comments you may have cornered the RT market on RUclips. Keep them coming. 👍🏼
:) Thanks Steve. Aim is not focussed on subscribers, but on enjoying the process :) Would be nice if others will enjoy the result, that is true. To be honest: I was surprised how much fun the proces was: preparing, capturing, editing. Gives me additionl purpose. Like we discussed before: I can't just go and do a round tour. I'd like to have a purpose for it :) Happy new year, mate
I sold my R1200RT not long ago. Have to say I miss it, beautiful bikes. Biggest thing I miss is that screen! 😂 I have a Versys 1000Gt SE now due to it being lighter. Nice to hear that horizontally opposed twin again. Stay safe brother 👍
I used to have a R1200GS. Now owning the RT since October. Have to say I really prefer the RT. Is the Versys that much lighter? And does it also feel much lighter? The Boxer is always praised for its low center of gravity. I would miss the Boxer engine a lot...
@@FlatTwinTherapy I think it's only about 12kg lighter, but feels much lighter getting it on/off the stand and wheeling it around. As you know, once moving the RT feels as light as a feather. I'm waiting for a shoulder operation, so once that is done, all being well I'll look again at the RT. Absolutely love them, that engine is fantastic.
Right, that makes sense. Hope your shoulder will be OK! Take care
@@FlatTwinTherapy Thank you, you too.👍
Watched some of your vids this morning (while doing some indoor cycling ;) ): nice content. I noticed you're using a DJI Osmo Action 3 as well. Do you mind sharing the frame rate and exposure settings (ISO range). I currently had it on 25 f/s and the rest on auto. I feel your vid was a lot more crips (referring to your vid "mic test with Action 3, some dronage...". loved that content! Beautiful drone shots as well. Thanks, appreciated
Nice to see someone committed to celebrating the RT! Good luck with finding a solution to the wind noise; I believe it's basically unavoidable with a chin-mounted camera. Consider looking into mounting a separate mic on the bike somewhere, completely out of the wind, and get a good quality "dead-cat". That suggests a separate recording device or perhaps a handle-bar mounted second camera (which I would always recommend, as it provides shot variety). I know also of someone who is experimenting with wireless microphones, wired into the chin-mounted camera. Yes, moto-vlogging can become a money sink-hole.....
Thanks for the tips! Dead cat is ordered and I will start experimenting with microphone placement as well. A second mic for engine sound would be great. Will investigate the alternatives. Thanks. And indeed: dedicated to the RT. I only have a RT since October, but I prefer this over the GS.
