When I first got sick with lupus I was probably 18 years old and now as a 34-year-old that has lived through two kidney transplants, dialysis and all kinds of stuff, my teenage body does not resemble my adult body. Some days I was considered obese and some days I was considered normal. Never skinny though. But the thing is that lupus is a silent illness and nobody knows that I'm gaining weight because I'm on steroids. They don't know that if I stop taking the steroids, it'll hurt to walk so I have to essentially choose between walking or being skinny. Which do you pick? Selena is probably the only celebrity that I feel some sort of bond to because I know exactly what it's like to live with lupus and not just lupus but needing a transplant. But on top of that, I also have bipolar disorder, I also had a really toxic relationship like she did. And I think the fact that she is still standing strong, is a very good motivator for her fans. I don't want to put down other celebrities because I'm sure they have their own struggles, but a lot of people praise people like Kim Kardashian or Hailey Bieber. It's easy to look your best when you feel your best... And unlike with things like cancer or other illnesses, you can't tell someone has lupus. In fact, the weight gain makes you think that there's a lazy, fat person who just doesn't want to walk. I've had actual people come up to me and bitch about me having a handicap spot, because I look normal but they don't know that every single step I took, it was so painful for my joints. Empathy people!
