After watching and reading the comments, my inner voice says use neatsfoot oil. Neatsfoot oil is used on leather work; it would be my first choice; then linseed oil (not sure if it matters if it's boiled or raw linseed oil); then mineral oil. White spirits (naphtha, white gas) would be my last choice because of it's volatility, although if there is a little bit of it in there the polish would dry faster when doing your shoes.

you must have skipped your organic chem class... you have to add 1 -2 tablespoons of boiled linseed oil... come on.. the distillates have evaporated they need to be replaced.. use your head.

I did this. It helped repair the cracks and made it useable. I only use it on the edges of dress shoes, so it serves it's purpose. I only let it heat for 2 minutes when it was completely melted. Cooled in about 15 using a fridge at 36 degrees Fahrenheit and outside at 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Not sure if the amount of it decreased but it still shines. Just be careful.

This will not change the overall composition of the shoe polish. What it has lost are the more volatile components such as naptha and turpentine - you are not re-adding those. This will work if the shoe polish is merely a little hard on the outside, as melting it will redistribute those more volatile substances lost from the outer part of the polish. I notice the polish used in the presentation was not very hard and had hardly lost any of its volume. I did try this myself just to check I was correct in my thoughts by doing exactly this with a completely hardened shoe polish - it had lost a huge amount of mass and volume and was a much smaller puck - I would say about half the proper volume due to drying out..... It melted lovely in the water bath and it cooled and looked like new albeit only about a third of a tin full. I thought - hey maybe I was wrong.... but then i tried to use it. Although it looked great, it was just as dry and crusty when used. Takeaway: - yes this may work for very mild loss of volatile material, but it cannot be a complete fix, and certainly will fail in more extreme cases without adding back what has been lost. I had fun trying it though 😊

My dudes. I tried this. It works. End of story. But in case there’s some confusion, here’s what I did: I heated the polish until it melted. And then I let it cool. And then I polished my shoes with it.

I have often restored dried shoe polish but you have to add solvent. I use white spirit (I think that is called white gas in the US?). But, but, but, it would be very dangerous to do this over a stove. There would be a high fire risk. leaving on a warm radiator is enough. Put the tin in a tray or something of the sort that will catch any spillage. It's only a small saving but a quick and simple task.

Don't heat wtf. Boil water in a container and keep the wax can over the water for some time closing the lead of the boiled water pot. Cz the direct heating damages the texture of the wax.

You can do this but in a safe way. When the polish has melted, add a small amount of linseed or mineral oil.
