Personally. I started the hobby before the Horus Heresy books were even considered as a project. Most lore was inside your faction's codex. Any mention to that era was legends dimly remembered as a better time long gone. I miss that aspect of mystery to the Heresy. Just feels like we lost a lot of the gravity in 40k lore with all the explanations in this deluge of content.

50+ books as required reading? Hell no! The first 4 would've sufficed to intice you to 40k! Other than Dawn of War, that's what got me into it. That being said... I own more than enough to have a tall shelf filled with nothing but 40k books...

Just watch Majorkill for lore. If you like a character enough, buy the book.

I probably read 50 40k books before even starting the Horus Heresy. Eisenhorn/Ravenor/Bequin. Gaunt's Ghosts, Ciaphas Cain, and more. I knew the basic story of Horus Heresy, but reading all of the other stuff made we crave the insane depth that the HH books have.

no it isnt the best days of the hobby, when the lore was at its peak, 3d edition the horus heresy wasnt even written out yet they are decent books until the halfway point, so its a good read but not necessary the only people that know about anything that happened back then are chaos marines anyway and modern gw wants to write only about loyalist marines and imperial people anyway, so anyone who would know and care isnt allowed to have a story anymore but in the end it doesnt matter the setting is dead, there is nothing grim or dark left in the far future of marvel40k so who cares read storm of iron, read desert raiders, read lord of night, read dead man walking thats it

I once came across a guide about 20 basic books required to read to understand the Horus Heresy. But I'd rather read 20 good books than torture myself with the "required ones", especially since you can enjoy a hobby without any knowledge of the universe.

To quote a famous video on the topic "The first 4 are chronological, so that's easy. But things start getting interesting when you get to book 5!" If you don't know what I'm talking about look up Tom and Ben chart.

That is exactly how I introduced my friend to Warhammer. Now, she is collecting Tyranids because she likes "space monsters". By the way, she tried to read Horus Heresy but dropped it while reading one of the first books. She didn't like the writing or the plot. I think that if I had recommended reading something first, she wouldn't be interested in Warhammer at all.

I really like this, as a fan of yours that doesnt really have time to catch the streams. A small piece of advice, if youd accept it? Just a little bit of editing here i think would go a long way. Cutting out dead air between sentences, verbal stumbling, etc. I'm glad to see you experimenting with new kinds of content! I cant wait to see what you do next!

100% agree. The horus heresy is too much. Definitely a good idea to let them gain more and more interest in Warhammer and let them learn more about what they want to learn and eventually they'll find themselves learning about the horus heresy lol
