Not to be too picky, but the illustration is from "Stranger in a Strange Land," not "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress." Both books are great, as is this song. Personally, I like Linda Ronstadt's version.

If you know the history, you will know that Peter Green wrote the song after a series of very bad LSD trips. It led to psychosis and schizophrenia including a god delusion brought on by fan worship and influences from the spirit he opened himself up to. He was a complete mess and left the band after this song was released. I was taking a lot of LSD around the time and had three 'bad trips' in a row, the first one drove me to attempt to jump of a roof. I couldn't have been anymore fortunate as a friend left the group and came looking for me and unbeknown to me he managed to reached out and grab my clothing just as I had put my foot out to go. He struggled as I tried to get away as I wanted the hell to end. He saved my life that night and I was grateful to him. Unfortunately, he lost his life 2 years later and was killed by 4 guys who caved his head in with rocks. Anyway, I sat through 2 more acid trips that week as I wanted to master the effects it had on me. After all, that was what we done in our group, smoke hash and take acid. The next trip I took after the 3 was the best trip I ever had and I then stopped because I didn't think I could top it. I tell you this because I have an idea of what Peter must have went through. Psychologically, it wasn't a picnic. It's probably the scariest experience you are likely to go through. It was what you might conjure up hell to look like. Seeing peoples faces melting, perceiving music to sound like noise and seeing gigantic multi-coloured demon diving out of the sky to attack you. Go read the lyrics. They are not about some girl, The song is about the Green Man (himself; The Green God was his nickname) Alishi (the anti Christ that the devil is trying to create within him) and the devil is the one with the Two Pronged Crown who he seen in his mind or more likely in his spirit). The song is to the devil. I'm a big fan of the original Fleetwood Mac but not the later band. The lesson to learn from the life of Peter Green is not to take something to drink or eat that a stranger hands you and to stay away from very powerful drugs. Most people are not robust enough to handle the worst side of these drugs, myself being one. Fortunately, I survived but there was only about a quarter of a second in it or I wouldn't be typing this story for you right now. I'm away to listen to the band now.

I heard this song 30 yrs ago and still love it. Each person on this planet had some kind of mental holocaust within themselves no matter if it's military, prison or trafficking and etc. We are all survivors of a war.
