MZ TS125 Motorcycle
Testing the MZ. Trying to sell this at the moment as I don't have time to do it justice. Incredible piece of history though. Built in East Germany one year before the Berlin wall came down. Designed to be stripped with a pocket knife and 4 spanners.

Wind turbine step - up regulator
Просмотров 14 тыс.12 лет назад
Stepping up the voltage from my treadmill turbine with a switching power supply bought off ebay for £15.I would be interested on opinions here. Is it worth harvesting the power below optimum speed needed for battery charging?. Also this now makes the output more suitable for a standard solar mppt controller which could use any extra voltage if the regulator was set a bit higher.

Putting the mk3 turbine back on the pole

PLEASE NOTE: This video shows mild steel spokes welded to a cast iron flywheel. This is at best a dubious engineering practice although possible and has worked for me mainly without problems. Cast iron is brittle and prone to fractures. Please do not copy this unless you know exactly what you're doing and are prepared to carefully assess the results in a controlled area away from people pets an...
MPPT controller & motor test

Testing the output from a new Chinese treadmill motor rated at 180v 7.5A 3700rpm 20.5 rpm / volt. Although the test is crude without a tachometer and proper test setup there is a very noticable difference between this motor and the one running in my mk1 & mk2 videos as part of a small turbine. The other motor is 180v 7.5A 4000rpm 22.2 rpm / volt. Even considering the better rpm / volt ratio of ...
treadmill wind turbine broken blades - mk2
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.12 лет назад
Even with 200mm clearance these blades still managed to hit the pole in high wind. To save making more blades I trimmed them back from 1150mm to 1000mm with a grinder in less than 20 mins. The smaller blades should give a higher top speed, hopefully over 400rpm without sacraficing too much low wind ability.
VAWT Prototype
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.12 лет назад
Vertical axis wind turbine prototype. Each blade is an aerofoil generating lift so the device should turn faster than wind speed would normally allow with a vawt. Construction is Polycarbonate roofing sheet (although I constantly say polypropylene!!) bonded together with silicone sealant.

My mk1 treadmill turbine turning & furling. The blades on this version were 1150mm long and eventually hit the pole. Once trimmed back to 1000mm they were fine. Please see my other vids for construction and the broken blades.

mk1 treadmill motor turbine build. £130 and 3 weekends. Stand / tower detail shown together with bicycle rev counter. The main upright tube is a 2" diameter scaffold pole which sometimes has a slight wobble in high wind. Now looking around for some sort of lattice to replace or strengthen the pole although it would take years to weaken. NOTE: wobble was due to broken blade tip - pole fine. See ...
treadmill wind turbine build - mk1

mk1 treadmill motor turbine build. £130 and 3 weekends. The steel racking and tube used was surplus from a construction job as was the PVC pipe. The pipe is 6mm (1/4") and very tough. TEST any material you use by bending / snapping it, certainly don't use thin guttering. Remember that PVC degrades under UV light so it won't last for decades. Bits i bought were the motor - £50, 40 metres of 2.5m...

    ... Hi Greg. Good idea to use PVC pipe to make the blades as you can make an ideal taper and twist for each blade. My concern would be fatigue in the PVC near the blade root. Do you have any information on how long blades made from this material last? I have made wooden blades before about 750mm long each. This was successful but you have to keep painting them to make them last and stop water, hail & wind destroying them. Making them from wood takes a lot longer:- you have to make the blade from 4 or 5 lengths to reduce twisting of the wood when it dries out, and be very accurate with the blade profile or you will get vibration caused by one blade being more powerful that the others causing vibration of the rotor head. There is a lot more to making good blades than you would think. My next project will be to make a mould and make them from fibre-glass. Then you have to find a suitable generator!

    • @BloodyKnives66
      @BloodyKnives66 9 лет назад

      howtosaveupenergy A good motor to use is a old treadmill motor they usually go for around 30 to 50 bucks. You could use any electric motor but but permanent magnet motors are better and you have to look at the rated RPM of the motor if I remember correctly the higher the RPM the more rotations it takes to produce energy so you want a low RPM motor.

    Most treadmill motors will only put out at most under a good wind 7to 9 volts now if u have 2 or 3 of these wired together u will have a good charging system ,treadmill motors are a great tool for generatoring power but it can only go so far ,building 2 or 3 of these as I did will work very well in low winds

  • @losttreasurehunt
    @losttreasurehunt 12 лет назад

    Most of these power supplies that do step up the voltage like the one your using do put up a good show ,but don't work to well under a load or hooked to the battery bank.With a treadmill motor the best way is to gear your windmill up to at least 4 to 1 ratio,once this has been done it takes lots more wind to move the turbin blades and get a good charging 13 to 14 volts out of the unit . one way to double your voltage take 2 windgenerators wire them as u would in parallel 6 volts+6 = 12

    Nice light weight design! I noticed on a similar model that the rotational direction changes at high and low wind. It starts with lift and at higher wind the drag is taking over, changing the direction of rotation.

    Thanks for all of the advice guys. If I move any further forward with a turbine i will do the job properly and build an axial flux alternator based machine. This project was cheap and a bit crude but has given me a handle on some of the design issues without spending a fortune. I will endeavour to post a video with a 'proper' test setup showing the voltage and current with the dc generator under load and charging the batteries. Thanks for the tips on the charge controller.

  • @CrapPolice

    Missouri wind and solar has some high speed blades for that motor. They also have shaft adaptors for their hubs. It appears to be suited for 12 or maybe 24volt battery charging. Avoid mppt with this thing. Most mppt charge controllers will only handle pv efficiently. Take it from a 20 year solar installer. cheers
