I just happened to visit the man named Ralph to pick up some plywood. While there he placed a piece of Maple in my hand and said "turn this". So here it is apiece of turned Maple. Tell me what you think.

Here it is, a true work of art! 6" tall and 8" in diameter. there are 12 segments per ring made from Maple and Black Walnut. Sanded and the finish is Poly. Still can't decide if it needs a top. What wood you do?

Here is another segmented bowl. A bit smaller and almost as many pieces. Please let me know if you enjoy these kind of pieces done on video.

The final coat of poly is applied after a light sanding with brown paper bag.

Having a bit of extra time, because the wife said ok. Here is the finished bowl. This is a large piece and took a while. I always enjoy making the segment bowls. Even if I do gripe about all of the sanding to prepare each segment. Please let me know what you think of the end product.

In an attempt to save wood, someone got the idea. There is a lot less waste making segmented bowls. What the down side is, cutting sanding and gluing all of the pieces together. The plus is the unique patterns that can be produced. Here I just want a segment bowl with one color scheme. It is all glued and all that is left to do is to turn on the lathe. Wish me luck.

It is of most importance to have a board flat and strait when making segments for a bowl.

If you are from the southern half of the US, you are most likely not aware of the massive loss of ash trees. The Ash burrow beetle is wrecking havoc on our trees in Wisconsin. If your tree is discovered to have the beetle then you are required to have it cut down and disposed of. So here I make use of a piece of the tree and turn it into a bowl.

A friend told me that I never finish my videos. I do all of the turnings, but never show the completed piece. Well here is the second half of what happens with the the turned bowl.

Sometime a piece of tree gets lost and forgotten. This piece lay in the yard for several months, and nearly thrown out. So glad that it got turned. The grain in this is spectacular. Hope it looks as good once dry and finish applied.

A gentleman that my wife works with, asked if we want some pieces of cherry tree. Well once again I have a bunch of wood. Here are some very small bowls turned from the biggest pieces. Hope you like what was made.

Here using the Dewalt scroll saw to do wood letter cut outs for sign. I use 3/8" thick maple for the letters, and spalted maple for the back. One of the best techniques to learn is how to make corner relief cuts!
