How to replace the cabin air filter on 2012 and similar Prius C cars. This may also work for the Yaris as they're pretty similar.
2003 Tomos LX For Sale

This is a ride around the block on my 2003 Tomos LX. Startup, idle and full throttle and breaking are demonstrated in this video.
This was so clear and helpful! Just changed my filter and reinstalled the glove box door and everything is working great!
I agree this is best demo taking glove box and checking filter cabin. Just bought the car. It was easy taking it off. For whatever reason giving me trouble. The spring got loose it was giving me trouble and it's hot in garage. Thanks step by step👍. I was losing it lol. Bravo 👏. Keep up good work!!
Hmm seems like I'm missing my cabin air filter cover. Will that affect the airflow?
A+ content right here. Thanks!
I have zero knowledge in doing this or sometimes will make things worse by diy...thx for the video .manage to change it successfully..an achievement in the eve new year for myself :-)
고맙다♡
Thanks for this!
Thank you! Works on 2016 Prius as well! Very clear instructions!
This was great I was able to change it bc if this tutorial. Thank you!!!!
Depending on the brand filter you buy... Air flow is NOT going up. Air flow is down. If you put the filter in with the arrow pointing up then it's upside down unless it says up by the arrow. The ONLY time an arrow on a cabin air filter should point up is if it says "up" next to the arrow. All horizontally mounted cabin air filters with the blower motor mounted below the filter have downward air flow. Otherwise the blower motor would be full of dirt and debris. If it doesn't say up next to the arrow then the arrow indicates air flow direction and should point down. Still not sure? Then remove the filter and turn on the blower. Then put your hand where the filter goes. Does it feel like it's blowing upward? Use a piece of string or tissue paper. They will be sucked downward. All the Toyota parts that say up on them have nothing to do with air flow. They are simply telling us which side goes up.@
Thanks, very clear and consice instructions. For some reason the dealership seems to think I'm STUPID. I not only have a Masters degree( doesn't help with auto maintenance) but I've got great people staring their knowledge on RUclips.
Great explanation 👌👍👏😀🙌
The arrow does not necessarily point up, it's direction of air flow .. Such a simple job yet You could actually have it wrong
Excellent video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you, it was a great instructional video. Very clear and helpful! I did it in 10 minutes!
excellent!!!
Thank you for this. I'm going to go check the filter in my '12 Prius right now. It looks much easier to get at than the one in the Ford Fiesta I had. And save $$$ and DIY.
I must tell you, this is the best visual demo of how to take apart the glove compartment to check the air filter and also how to replace the hydraulic strut handle to the glove compartment side panel. I have watched others but yours is the best visually. You go step by step and explain each step. Bravo to you and thank you for helping many people, including myself. 👍🏼
THANK YOU. This almost hand me in tears because the stupid piston. Thanks for going slow and showing all the details!! ♥️
Had same problem stupid piston. I was going rambo inside garage. All good!!
I think the Prius C plastic much have stiffened up a lot since 2012. There was almost no flex at all in glove box. I could pop one side out, but then, there was a lot of compression on the other side, and I could not squeeze the plastic inwards enough. After 1/2 hour, I got out some big screwdrivers to use as pry bars! What a PITA! It took about 45 minutes. Then, I moved over to the 2014 RAV4 (uses the same filter) and used the same process. I replaced the dirty filter in about 4 minutes. Didn't need any tools on the RAV4.. Next time, my wife can change her own filter! ;)
I just referred to this video again to replace the filter. It does not matter which side one selects as the opposite will give a huge fight. This is when I find at least 30' for this job. At least the engine air filter replacement is a breeze. Still beats paying big money at the dealer or area mechanic.
Thanks. I also struggled for more than 20 minutes to get the glovebox released. It’s a serious pain to get it out. The Prius C is a great car but this is a crummy design.
Thank you that was very helpful
Thanks for this. Got mine replaced recently, some mice started a nest in my cabin filter. Opened it again, found some debris but no droppings. I hope the mice stay away.
Hey Adam, I too hope the mice stay away. That is no good to be breathing in their feces!
Adam that scary. Hope that basterd is not there. Thats freaking sucks!!
Thank you for the video, very helpful!
How often do you change the cabin filter?
Martin Pham every 15000miles
Thank you. Based on this video I was able to change the cabin air filter for our 2014 Prius C. It seems to be the same procedure. Definitely hard to squeeze that glove box out, though. Thanks again. :)
Excellent video, and certainly can save a lot of money doing it yourself! Thanks
perfect!
Won't work for me. 2012 Prius C. I press in the right side, fine. Then the left side won't budge. It doesn't help that the left side compartment panel is inflexible, unlike the right side. Stupid design. But I can pull in the left side first (because of the flexibility of the right side panel), but then the right side doesn't have enough room or flexibility to compress so I can drop the compartment.
Definitely needs muscle, I did mine and it was a pain.
Works as in the video on 2015
Perfect! I did it step by step... Very easy!! Thanks!
in the directions it says the filter should point down? step6 "Install the new filter with the arrow indicator, printed on the side of the filter, pointed down"
+Eddie Garcia Yes arrows down. Some filters say UP then you put the arrows up. Depends on brand.
Nice video! Maybe next time instead of letting Toyota do it I can do it myself.
It’s so stupidly easy. You will save money and time if you do it yourself.
