Sail On Boys, how do you write a sea shanty? - Lesson #6
Просмотров 18 тыс.6 лет назад
CUT STRAIGHT TO THE SONG: 3:08 We talk about traditional sea shanties, and how the hell you write a good one - all part of our process of making Operation Mincemeat, on at the New Diorama coming May 2019 TIX! www.newdiorama.com/whats-on/operation-mincemeat Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/spitliptheatre
How do you explain stuff in a musical??? Lesson #5
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 лет назад
We've got a whole bunch of potentially dry, war-based context to deliver, and a lot of characters to introduce. How do we make sure it's not boring? How do we make sure it's not totally impenetrable? What rhymes with "freighters"? That's where you guys come in.
The Man Who Could Smell Murder - Lesson #4
Просмотров 12 тыс.6 лет назад
NOTE: start listening at 03:45 if you just want to crack into the song We bang on for ages (and then insist on singing) about legendary pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury, a man who genuinely claimed he could smell murder on a corpse. Charming juries and judges across the country, how many men did he send to their deaths for no reason? Enough to SING JAUNTILY ABOUT, that's for sure. All part of ...
Born to Lead - or, "Are you Eton or Harrow?" Lesson #3
Просмотров 27 тыс.6 лет назад
NOTE - Not interested in the talking bit? Skip to 2:50 to jump straight to the song. We talk about the rather troublesome fact that in a story about WW2 secret missions, it's hard to get past the fact that the stars of the show always... look alike. Then we sing a song about it! Hurrah! All part of documenting the making of our musical Operation Mincemeat, opening at the New Diorama Theatre in ...
What the hell is going on in 1943?! Lesson #2
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 лет назад
So at some point we're going to have to explain the various mad secret operations going on at this point in WW2 (spoiler alert: there are bloody loads). What the hell is OPERATION HUSKY? And why should we care about OPERATION BARCLAY? Just how many bloody secret missions were flying about here?! Well, give it a watch and find out. It's a snippet of a big old work in progress song, but dammit, t...
Killing Hitler on a speeding train - Lesson #1
Просмотров 18 тыс.6 лет назад
Well hell, it's our first ever video! We're gonna be talking you through some maaddddd real-life history and finishing up with a song that it's inspired from our show Operation Mincemeat, which we're coaxing into wriggling, screaming life over the next year. Our first one centres on Operation Foxley - an unapproved WW2 operation to assassinate Hitler on a moving train. It was never carried out ...
Song = 2:49
Loved this show, saw it in July. Can't wait until it comes to Broadway!!!
It sounds a lot like the chorus to a folk song 'down by the laganside' which goes, to a very similar tune: And when we dance We'll dance together When we cry We'll hold each other And when we love We'll love forever Down by the laganside I'd be interested if it was an inspiration!
and so, the legends were born
Saw these three performers in 2023 ...fabulous. saw new cast in 2024..Mincemeat is THE best 👌 👍
this show is the best thing in the west end by a mile, you have to watch it
So mad that this is how born to lead started and grown into what it has.
It's mad seeing this, the making of it after seeing it at the theatre, thank you for a great song. That and Das Ubermensch, such a bop 😂
So cool to hear an early rendition of this epic opening. Who knew the initial idea was shrews instead of trout?
If this didnt take inspiration from The Rose by Bette Midler I'd be very surprised
Very entertaining videos thank you. Oh and PS this isn’t a sea shanty. Might be a song about the sea but it isn’t a shanty. Thanks for the fun videos though
Oh people ! I'm back again to see the show again in August with two newbies ! Looking forward to it ! and Congrats on your many awards !
So different from the final cut...saw the original cast in London last year...fabulous 🎉
It is so weird to see that it started off as just this, and became the amazing show it is today
I wonder what these three would have thought if you told them here what life would be like for them now 😊🎉
It’s really similar to the hymn “Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy,” which also has a nautical theme! ruclips.net/video/4dUVzeAvjOc/видео.htmlsi=gZv2hbc8CVE_WyrG
...and now they have the Olivier for Best New Musical ❤
"Born to lead: the lost verses" What a gem!
5 and half years later, this song gets performed at the Olivier's in advance of the musical winning Best New Musical 🥰
OLIVIER AWARD WINNERS
I love this song, it is my favourite on the soundtrack.
It’s so cool seeing this content after seeing the finished musical! I love seeing the development process!
Saw it the other night, and what an amazing show. Hugely impressive writing, staging, and performance, and great fun. I loved how it worked on so many levels - as comedy, as satire, as song and dance, as social commentary, and as just a fascinating story. This song is an excellent example - it helps make a quick switch from the basement to the sea, and focusses the story on the difficulty in delivering the, er, "cargo" to its destination, and the danger and nerve wracking elements of that part of the story. But later it comes back, unaltered, as wonderful social commentary contrasting the huge collective sacrifices that so many made ("if it's down, it's down together; if it's up, it's up as one") with the relentless narcissism of the upper class twits running the operation. A description that sounds a bit dry and misses out the great fun of the whole thing. Fantastic job, folks.
So, ive never met Brian (in the drawer), but (as a volunteer) i saw and 'dealt' with a pathology specimen Spilsbury preserved...it was a weird privilege to be able to engage and be part of that bit of history. Faulty but fascinating (as were so many if his era and earlier 😬)
youtube video with 12k views to the best reviewed musical in the history of the west end and a finale that encapsulates a screamingly funny plot and a tear-jerkingly dignified tribute to the second world war's foremost unsung hero. bravo you lot
I saw Operation Mincemeat last night and it was absolutely fantastic, this song was one of the bits I loved the most. Hats off to you all!
One of my favourites and has been stuck in my head the last week in particular. Saw Operation Mincemeat back in December and listen to the soundtrack almost daily now!
Saw 'Operation Mincemeat' at the Fortune in November. Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! ❤ Bought the soundtrack, which is currently playing on a loop at our house. 'Sail On, Boys' is one of my favourites along with 'Useful' and 'Dear Bill' and 'Born To Lead' and... Well, all of them I guess😊. Thank You❤
I'm listening to the soundtrack on streaming- it's funny that this song isn't in the final cut.
it kind of is??? it's just been adapted a whole bunch, its in making a man, and obviously spilsbury's reprise
Best writers since Jesus
i feel like this surpasses Jesus
Tash and Zoe swapped! Currently watching every video i can find at the moment about this show because I'm OBSESSED!
2:16
Loved this on stage!
❤
A wondeful pastiche of a modal tune but enhanced with its own sincerity and integrity .. creating wonderful theatrical moving moments
saw the show 4 times - absolutely hilarious!
I love how you did a lot of research 🥰🥰🥰. Watched Operation Mincemeat this summer and it's perfection 🥰🥰🥰 just like this video ❤
I’m travelling to London to see it next week : ) I wonder if they could have known how successful it would become. All it needed was the “watch with a garrotte in it” line 🕰️
Fantastic work. Although frustrating as well, because I was looking for this as an old traditional song with many other performances across the years, argh 😂 Damn fine work
This song gives me goosebumps, so pure and simple but so poignant and says so much. Love it so much, as does my daughter, so seems to be our constant soundtrack!
So amazing how many lyrics, beats and even choreography are still the same! That hair though... Davey, I mean... Though I'd love to see Monty styling out the pink hair!
I loved the show but lol. the hypocrisy, discussing white male privilege! Are we to believe that these 4 were all dragged up on council estates?
Thank you three for sharing your creative process. I can't wait for my third viewing in September.
Have seen your amazing musical twice now and can't wait to find an excuse to see it again. This is brilliant! Great fun to see your enthusiasm (which is evident on stage) during the creative stage. Thank you, you very talented clever people.
Genius
Tash as Fleming feels... So weird 😂
Saw Operation Mincemeat this week and was brilliant. So cleverly performed!
Sniff me Sir Bearnard 🤣🤣 Love how you've worked it into Making a Man. I constantly get the Splisbury verse and it's reprise later stuck in my head, moreso than any other part of the musical I think
This is so great! One of my favourite songs from the show!!
Saw the show on Saturday. Best west end musical ever. Just brilliant!
