Music is my diary
Просмотров 4416 часов назад
I use music to record how I'm feeling, what's going on in my life and my family, and as a buttress against passivity. I thought I'd do a to-camera video on that topic, inspired by the thoughtful modular synthesist @justrichardcharles I mention @jonathankreynolds and @leadbylies in this piece. Gristleiser effects pedal demo (Fuzzdog kit built)

I built this kit from shop.pedalparts.co.uk/product/gristle - it took me about 4 hours. It's a pretty bananas effect! VCA/VCF, tremolo, distortion/fuzz. The internal LFO has 4 waveforms - square, triangle, saw up and saw down (is one of those called sharktooth?). It was designed by a chap from the legendary industrial maniacs Throbbing Gristle, hence the name. There are two internal trimpots to...

#behringer #brains #edge I was wondering if I could kind of make a Behringer Grind by using the Edge as a sequencer. Well, kinda! Only 8 steps but I can trigger patch changes and gates with it. I blended the Edge with the Behringer Brains complex oscillator. Some of it sounded alright, some not so much! #behringer #brains #eurorack #dawless Can I use the Behringer Brains and the Analogue Solutions Oberkorn as a drum machine? Well, just about! The voltage controlled "model" selection is a bit haphazard, it's got "brains" of its own I reckon... But you can set a model via CV, allowing you to pick snare, hat, FM, tom and bass (albeit a tad unreliably). The unpredictability is fun though, sometime...

Blowing up a guitar amp and building a Ruby amp to replace it

My wife's amplifier was broken so I took it apart and fixed it. And it worked! But then it blew up. So I built a new amp based on the simple "Ruby amp". It's a surprisingly musical amp given how few components it has - and incredibly loud given it's running off a 9v battery! MORE OF MY NONSENSE: gavd.co.uk/

Gikfun Laser Harp - Gav tries to build
Great Demo, and write-up
hey. what is this rack you put all your synths on called ?
I've looked through my old orders and can't find the precise model but it's something like this www.bax-shop.co.uk/keyboard-stands/innox-kb-120-mkii-keyboard-stand - I think it's exactly that one actually. I then bought some additional arms to mount more gear on it. It's a standard tubing size (1 1/4 inch or something?) so there's a lot of stuff that can mount on it. It's on half price at the moment - £87 - which really is a bargain. It's fairly sturdy for home studio use
Nice video Gav, thanks for the shout out! You're definitely a proper musician though! 😀 Your release strategy is very similar to mine. Pretty much everything I've released is the result of doing jams on RUclips. Firm believer in the idea that quality (perfect) is the enemy of done!
I had a president at a startup I worked at that would say "the perfect is the enemy of the good" on a daily basis!
I love my edge. It's such a fun playtime device.
time evaporates on the Edge!
Music is my diary too, i love to save my emotions in the music i love, or making music to save emotions and feel these emotions again.
Nice Jam
Thanks Jon! Love me Edge, love FM, simple as
Look at those rubber nipples
They look nice and easy to see against the black, at the small cost of occasionally jamming the switch! I could trim about 1mm off them I guess, they're a tiny bit too long
Mans got so many synths he has to move at the speed of light to operate them all
yeah I just noticed this, it's so odd, it's not like that on the file I uploaded - I guess RUclips glitched out!
Sounds savage
arr, it's a mean beast! I reckon a CV mod would be good on it

nice jam... No need for Grind... What you have there is great !!!!!! 😉
Thanks! The units work nicely together :-)
Nicely robotic Gav, and the edge is surprisingly tune full
Thanks Jon! Whenever my music isn't tuneful, it's just because it's microtonal and people aren't sophisticated enough to get it. At least, that's what I used to say when my bass was out of tune! "Good enough for jazz"
Where's that box from looks pretty good!
which box particularly? The kit is a Cherub Chorus from Fuzzdog, built into a Hammond-style 1590B enclosure. I use a little Marshall battery powered amp for testing. There's a little blue and white component tester as well :-)
Spiky
Yeah it has some very good bars in it ! As for the "first take"......at least you enjoyed it !!!

Nice
cheers Jon. Loving the Tracker now, I rarely use anything else! When the kids are at their clubs I can sit there with cans on making beats, it's like entering a time machine because it flies by!
Great video. Get some Rocket Sockets for the nuts.
I just looked those up - they sound great! I do often scratch the pedals when I crank the nuts in... Next time I order some pedals I'll be ordering some of those - thanks so much for the tipoff!
This is awesome !!!💣 two different beat types ... great glitches to the sound ... nice progression also. 👍
much appreciated! The Tracker workflow lends itself to such fun with chaotic beats!
Sounds thick Gav
arr, thanks Jon! I've found that, like monkeys, the smaller the pedal, the more concentrated the fuzz. I am considering making a desert rock album, but I need to finish building a guitar amp first; not gonna use Garageband's sims for that kinda thing. And I blew up my wife's amp by fixing it until it was bost. Oops. I built a RAT a while ago into a 1590A enclosure and that sounded better'n the one I built in a 1590B! I gave it to Ryan from Lead By Lies, I think it's still on his pedal board :-) Gotta have a RAT innit!
@@Gavddotcodotuk sheikh yer booty
You should get a sticker for it and call it the GavD Patch Job and sell these!
haha I'd have to get my build time down to less than 2 hours but I'd build 'em if folks wanted 'em! There are commercial patchbays like the DF Audio ones, they are extremely good, I used one for my Norli album that I recorded on 4 track tape, and I could patch up a sound for each track without ripping my pedal board apart!
I’d be interested in one, actually
Can you tell me about the white and blue gameboy-esque device?
that's a component tester. I'm notorious for missing the decimal point on my multimeter so I often double check component values using it! You can get one for about 15 quid, they're not expensive, and they're very helpful indeed. If you find a component with all the text scratched off, it's a lifesaver in identifying it!
Nice paint job
thanks Jon . I started sanding the cases and doing thinner coats of spray with more layers, seems to work better than one thick coat straight onto raw aluminium
Nice clean job !!! Well done !
Thank you! It was a tight squeeze but it all fitted! I reckon if I built it in a 1590BB I could get several more effects loops in it, but it’s great for a small FX board :-)
@@GavddotcodotukYou have the skill to build one at anytime ...byt this one is very useful too !!!
Love it.... Raw , powerful beat....wonderful "pad" , great breaks with that snare ... Well done GavD , well done !!!!
Thanks! I really appreciate it! The Polyend Tracker is taking me some fun places musically :-) Great bit of kit
great project I am building mine now and have an issue. the leds light once and then turn off I think its the mic maybe?
have you adjusted the trim pot on the front? I'd suggest sticking a screwdriver in there and wiggling it about and trying different positions - it makes the mic more sensitive :-) I'd eliminate that first
Does it takes mere speakers
I'm not sure what you mean by that... It's not an amplifier, it's not designed to drive speakers, although if you went into a powered speaker or poweramp from it it would work. It's designed as a channel strip, to be used between the mic and PA or mixer or computer :-)
Your voice is tooooo loud. You heve to reduce it by 99%
why do fake 3d instead of true 3d like horizon chase 2
I grew up playing Outrun, Chase HQ, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge (whenever I could convince an Amiga owning friend to let me play!). Those games were sprite based. I kept thinking about how the road curves were done and I decided to solve it as a challenge, then built a game around it. The 3d I've produced isn't super accurately modelled, it's just something that feels like the racers of the 90s felt to me. Short answer - I'm old!
Haha, you won't ever do this again 🙂, always protect your board from the ground source. I went into this similar issue with a Octapre Dynamic, it had a blown fuse and mosfet. Replaced both, but still nothing, so ended up ordering a new power supply yesterday, 99% it will work again as it should be. So I think it is better to order a new power supply for only a couple of tens directly instead of figure out what is the cause.
Good stuff Luigi! Yes, with the new power supply this unit has worked quite happily :-) I'm no expert, I'm just a dabbler :-)
That spinny circuit board holder is sweet!
It's a big help for stuff like this!
This is super !!!!! Such tension ...and a punk feeling too ...👍

I like "clicky" beats ... Do you enjoy the Make Noise 0-coast ? I found one second hand...looks interesting...
Yes, I use the 0-coast on a lot of tracks, I find it to be a really musical little box, it has a lot of character
@@Gavddotcodotuk That's good.Maybe i will be able to buy it..if things go well. Wish you the best GavD
@@eamfos you won't regret it, it's a fantastic box. The menuing is horrific in it is the only issue, there are 2 buttons you have to menu with and it communicates with you by lights blinking for different counts. If I were to improve it, I'd add a USB port simply for setting the MIDI settings etc. however, you rarely need to use those menus unless you're doing something with MIDI or the "hidden" LFOs
@@Gavddotcodotuk I do not use MIDI anyway... The menu is weird ...ok. I can live with that. 😁 But i have to admitt there is a lot of though to buy something now. Things are getting worst and weird in the world...and very fast. Thanks for the info and advice man . 👍

Please, make zooming logarithmic. Linear approaching of objects looks weird.
Thanks for the comment! I'm not very good at maths I'm afraid! Do you have any resources that would tell me how to implement this? Here's my code for the Z-cache, it's the only code in the game I didn't write entirely myself, I adapted it from ChatGPT: const horizon = constants.CANVAS_HEIGHT_HALF; const calculateDistance = (y) => { const deltaY = y - horizon; if (deltaY <= 0) { // Points above or at the horizon go to infinity return Infinity; } return (constants.DEPTH_SCALING_FACTOR * horizon) / deltaY; }; for (let y = constants.CANVAS_HEIGHT + constants.OVERSCAN_Y; y >= glob.frameCache.HORIZON_Y; y--) { glob.zCacheDist[y] = calculateDistance(y) + glob.travel; }
Looks awesome Gav, it's come on a long way since last time I checked in!
arr! thanks chap!
You did it ? Oh it is sooo strange.. 😊 You put a lot of effort to that game man... So much patience and will. Hope it grows the way you want it too. Wish you the best GavD !!!!

I have this same oscilloscope and would like to know what settings you used and switch positions to monitor Eurorack. I don't have the manual. Bought it some time ago.
I'll have a proper check tomorrow, but Eurorack control voltage is generally +/- 5v peak to peak, so I'd set the range to that, then the speed to whatever the wave speed is - e.g. if you're monitoring an LFO at 10hz, I'd set to around there and dial it in by hand. I think the signal voltages can be greater in some cases. If I get it working again, I'll post a vid and put a link here :-)
@@Gavddotcodotuk Thanks for that, It gives me a starting point.
Did you sample the bass from closer?
no, it's one of your Eurorack samples you left on the device I think! Filtered and treated.
