Good football strategists and tacticians began to recover the role of winger in the attack because strikers were too direct and predictable, whereas dedicated wing play made a comeback with the positional play of coaches like Guardiola. Wing play makes better use of the space available in attack. But wingers must cultivate their goal-scoring chops so they don't become one-dimensional again like in the 1950s and '60s.
