Shades of Von Karajan. Excellent, total quality of control, love it,

a true dictator of the orchestra, refreshing in this era of wimpy conductors....the only comparison I can think of would be Hans Rosbaud, who drilled the Southwest German Radio orchestra into all-time-great status during the 1950's. This performance a little fast for my taste, but still the articulation is amazing; each instrumental choir perfectly defined. Somebody needs to give this man and his orchestra(s) a recording contract ASAP.

I've long thought/hoped that at least some of the artifacts of a dying White western civilization will be preserved by East Asians.

Ultimate music composition

I had just finished listening to Shostakovich’s 7th Symphony, conducted by Valery Gergiev and saw this in the youtube “recommended list” on the right …so why not? It never occurred to me that Hanoi would have a symphony orchestra …nor considering their experience in Indochina that a French man would be their conductor … And that the music played would be about the little spat the Russians and French had with each other. I checked out Mr. Ochanine “credentials” on the net. Quite impressive. Great conducting style (which shouldn’t be a surprise as he’s won awards in the face of “stiff” competition). No toothpicks or Mravinsky minimal movement, no arm waving or bluster or theatrics (I won’t name names)… I was surprised too to discover Ha Noi has an opera house (well, why not, “Fitzcarraldo” is a movie about Iquitos Peru getting an opera house). Of course, Vietnam has become an economic powerhouse!!! How the world has changed but how music, great music holds it all together. Thank you, Mr. Ochanine, I wish you and the Sun City Orchestra every continued success. And maybe you’ll be able to get several other cameras on stage to show us what the orchestra itself looks like.
