I lived in Riverside, Ohio for most of my life. It is a suburb of Dayton just minutes away. Roth, where Dwight played, has had many great basketball players, DA was the best all around high school player I've ever seen play, and Donald Smith, another great Roth graduate is the best high school shooter I've ever seen. Smitty was just lights out. Both have now passed away at young ages, and while I'm glad and honored to have seen them both play, it saddens me to know that so few people even know about them. I can remember going to watch Roth play Chaminade in the city tournaments, where on one side of the arena you'd find only black people sitting who were obviously Roth fans, and on the other side of the arena would be the white folks who were rooting for Chaminade. Roth had Smith and Phil Lumpkin, two of the greatest guards to ever play for any high school. Every time Donald would go up you'd hear this loud whispered-"Two..." It wasn't shouted is was just a quick-"TWO!" It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard on a basketball court. But after Chaminade beat Roth on a tipin at the buzzer all hell broke loose. That was the only race riot and fight I'd ever been in. Many people got the s**t kicked out of them, and it was an embarrassment for our city. But, there were serious racial divides back then. The game was fantastic, but the s**t that went on outside for the next several hours was horrific.
