Natalie, your conversation with Kevin Aho about existentialism was incredibly enlightening! The idea of "trivializing the trivial" and focusing on what truly matters was so profound. I've sent you a DM on Instagram. Keep sharing these amazing insights! 🌟

There is no way out of this tension. Find an honest way to live within the existential experience of living. Don't look for or expect it to be different.❤

In response to Søren Kierkegaard’s theory on personal despair. I see despair above all as an expression of powerlessness. You want things to be different from what they are or are going to be, but you don’t have the power to achieve that (fighting poverty or corruption, wanting to be a different person yourself, you name it). Or you want to understand something (e.g. our ‘being’, the origin of the universe, the mathematical code), but you have reached your intellectual ceiling. I don’t know if the struggle with that can eventually lead to becoming completely one with yourself, because I don’t know what that means, but in the end it’s all about learning to deal with it and accepting your own limitations, without getting bogged down in frustrations.

What it means to be human... The Parmenidean principle that “all is one” goes much deeper than the paradoxical consequence Parmenides himself attached to it, namely that all claims of change or of non-Being are illogical. It also goes deeper than Heidegger’s existentialism which goes back to this principle. From a human perspective, this “oneness” refers to the earth and everything on it and in it. Over the centuries, man has slowly broken this unity. The consequences have been disastrous.

Why does pessimism exist as a structural phenomenon? Because we are born as human beings and die after a while. There is no intrinsic meaning attached to all that. Optimism in the sense intended here can only be derived by man from his own imagination. A fantasy with which he creates a “Hinterwelt” (Nietzsche). But the question remains how strongly man can continue to believe in his own fantasy.

Prof.Aho obviously hasn’t solved ‘the hard problem of consciousness’ If he had he would not make the claim ‘that God does not exist.’ It would be more accurate for him to say he does not BELIEVE that God exists. Without understanding Consciousness, what it is it is presumptuous and premature to say God does not exist.

Our freedom, our free will, is in order for us to align ourselves with Reality. That is the purpose of the ego. The purpose of the ego is not to do everything stupid in existence as a way of exercising our free will egotistically and blindly to no purpose other than ego gratification.

  • @ALavin-en1kr

We should have more people like this, who question. We would have a better world. Most people sleep walk through life. We should have time apart from our duties to spend on philosophy, even if it is not our career. Philosophy is necessary for everyone who does not want to be just another member of the herd but instead contribute something positive. I am not a fan of the Existentialists, the way they lived their lives was not exactly praise worthy. We need something transcendent and absolute to set our boundaries, otherwise we are just egocentric bores. On the other hand ‘the unexamined life is not worth living.’

A psychosis is a breakdown of the ego. The ego has to be strengthened as a barrier so the subconscious mind so its imagery does not overwhelm the ego. Concentration on one thing should help, as should developing one’s concentration and focus rather than letting the mind be scattered and undisciplined. Be aware of self and the environment in a realistic, mindful way. Don’t indulge in fantasies or mental imagery. Stay focused.

Such an interesting video to watch and reflect on. Thank you. I love the embracing of uncertainty; that feels authentic. Perhaps a key is to do this in awareness that we may feel unsure or conflicted in what to do or say and we can speak this. In relationship I feel the most wonderful place to reach is to be able to express this dilemma with love, care and respect.

What is existential freedom? Sartre espoused that "Freedom is EXISTENCE and in it existence precedes essence". His version of freedom was an opposition against authoritarianism of any kind, which must include the kind of medical authoritarianism we have often seen in history. And so, just like the stoics we are free to choose how we respond to that which is our facticity, 'givens' and it would be 'bad faith' to ignore that responsibility. The task for the therapist and client alike, is to acknowledge what is given and to choose our freedom to respond to it.

A family member pointed me to this video after my comment to her and I quote “if they can treat us right, how do you expect for them to teach us right” . Then up pops Professor Gordon, talking about the impact he has on his students by treating them respectfully as humans and exposing the students to a diverse collection of writings. End result being a high level of student passes, probably because they feel engaged. I was humbled by your level of respect when asking the professor questions and you’re a Doctor, I would end up with a stutter trying to ask you questions. My main takeaway was the reply to your question on how to get started in existential philosophy to which the professors reply “ask yourself what matters and why? “ That question is still swirling around my head." Thank you for this piece of enlightenment at the start of a new year.

Omg. You're in an instant just in the introduction talking about what are the deepest things I feel like I can't even tell anybody without being considered negative and just, not wanting to show myself off enough, and I realize that I was raised on the wrong continent. I'm glad I at least know what my father knew being European, but it also hurts to know that I could have had a completely natural feeling life that felt utterly stilted and phony because of growing up in America. Most people can't get over themselves how proud they are to be on video all the time. I've heard people say they hate it but nobody acknowledges that awkwardness like you just so easily did right there. Thanks

Relationship. Anguish of alienation Rejected by the other To make another the whole world Knowing freedom in the arms of love Objectification Enslavement to desire Wanting only one attachment Yet forever unfulfilled Bondage to a role Bound to another’s will Longing for release Liberation of the chattel A facade to destroy Projections for cell walls A construct, and an object Pedestal, carved from stone How we long to be longed for Escape from the distancing Seduction to explore Subjective in relation To know freedom In belonging Liberty to the dance Writing songs for passing strangers A hope that’s ruled by chance How I long to fall Into the others arms But please don’t try to own me In security there’s calm Yet seeking the completion Of another, safe from harm This I would submit to To be known With unconditional regard

You know, I completely understand. But I wonder if we've actually just not learned how not to sell what I call post-traumatic wisdom (please acknowledge me if you like and use this term, I've been saddled with a major neck injury for years and, I have little to be sure I can market competitively except for these ideas I've been developing while being laid up!); that we're not selling ourselves short. In other words, what if we only think that we need unconditional regard because we have not yet been told that going through a difficult life is a sign of a soul that felt ready to take that kind of incarnation on. And as much more evolved as our social order was before it evolved, - & I don't think we complement that to our past selves enough, - from what I'm learning of history. Anyway what if we know something of great value, that just isn't valued yet. Cave men and women probably didn't care very much about tulip bulbs! Nor did they respect skinny thoughtful boys with bad eyesight probably very much either! But now some of these boys make our most valuable commodity - the information consolidating-sharing box
