Doesn't work for me. I never log into Google unless I have to, and my browser of preference on PC is Firefox. My downfall is a link to a short appearing on some other page, I click on it, and I'm off to the races. Maybe it's using generic popularity data, maybe it uses a different mechanism with people who aren't logged in. My answer for now on PC is setting a block in Cold Turkey Blocker. I'm still looking for a solution on my phone.
